Download or read book Rapid Eye Movement Sleep written by MallIck/Inoue and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1999-06-29 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This reference also includes nine color plates. Written by leading international scientists in the field, this comprehensive and up-to-date reference provides detailed coverage of various aspects of rapid eye movement sleep (REMS)-including phylogeny and evolution, ontogeny, neurophysiological and neurochemical phenomena, molecular processes, behavioral and physiological changes due to deprivation, and hypotheses on the neurodynamics of REMS. Examining the relationship between the neocortex in mammals and birds in the evolution of REM sleep, Rapid Eye Movement Sleep considers the roles of REMS in the maturation of the brain reveals a new theory that challenges the assumption that REM is solely initiated by bulbar mechanisms in intact animals explores experimental studies of REMS atonia and the mechanisms underlying tonic and phasic muscle atonia describes the cellular and molecular mechanisms and function of pontine ponto-geniculo-occipatal waves during REMS details the role of nitric oxide in the regulation of REMS summarizes new evidence on which neurotransmitters are responsible for the REMS generating mechanism presents an overview of several endogenous sleep substances that may positively or negatively regulate REMS and more. Rapid Eye Movement Sleep serves as essential reading for all researchers and clinicians in the study of sleep science, particularly physiologists and biologists; neurologists, neuropsychiatrists, psychiatrists, and psychologists; anesethiologists; and pharmacologists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Clinical practice related to sleep problems and sleep disorders has been expanding rapidly in the last few years, but scientific research is not keeping pace. Sleep apnea, insomnia, and restless legs syndrome are three examples of very common disorders for which we have little biological information. This new book cuts across a variety of medical disciplines such as neurology, pulmonology, pediatrics, internal medicine, psychiatry, psychology, otolaryngology, and nursing, as well as other medical practices with an interest in the management of sleep pathology. This area of research is not limited to very young and old patientsâ€"sleep disorders reach across all ages and ethnicities. Sleep Disorders and Sleep Deprivation presents a structured analysis that explores the following: Improving awareness among the general public and health care professionals. Increasing investment in interdisciplinary somnology and sleep medicine research training and mentoring activities. Validating and developing new and existing technologies for diagnosis and treatment. This book will be of interest to those looking to learn more about the enormous public health burden of sleep disorders and sleep deprivation and the strikingly limited capacity of the health care enterprise to identify and treat the majority of individuals suffering from sleep problems.

Book Discovery of Rapid Eye Movement REM Sleep by William C Dement and Michel Jouvet 1955 1970

Download or read book Discovery of Rapid Eye Movement REM Sleep by William C Dement and Michel Jouvet 1955 1970 written by Claude Gottesmann and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Last centurys research on sleep may be divided into two different time periods. The first half of the century was dominated by the work of Henri Piéron and Nathaniel Kleitman, and was devoted to sleep experiments of a classical nature that were performed on animals and humans (Gottesmann, Nova 2013). At the beginning of the second half of the century, a major discovery identified a sleep phase during which eye movements can be recorded and dreaming occurs. William C. Dement and Michel Jouvet, dominated the next fifty years independently with their discovery of nearly all the properties concerning rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, also called paradoxical sleep. This book analyses the first major findings that were made possible by all the available methods (behavioral observations, electrophysiology, surgical interventions, pharmacology) used by both authors to characterize this sleep stage. All the successive papers by Dement and Jouvet are analyzed in turn for the period from 1955 to 1970. The results that came of the authors research environment are taken into account, and all the data available in the past and present are discussed and integrated into those findings.

Book The Golden Age of Rapid Eye Movement Sleep Discoveries 1965 1966

Download or read book The Golden Age of Rapid Eye Movement Sleep Discoveries 1965 1966 written by Claude Gottesmann and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2005 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rapid eye movement sleep, the main dreaming stage, was definitively identified in 1953. However, up to 1964, the research in this field, although very significant for the first steps of knowledge, was not very extensive. In contrast, there was an explosion of results in 1965 and 1966. In this book, the author analyses all published physiological and psychological studies integrating, wherever possible, previous and more recent findings. This book is principally dedicated to research-workers entering the study of rapid eye movement sleep (REM sleep).

Book Rapid Eye Movement Sleep

Download or read book Rapid Eye Movement Sleep written by Kiyomi Bando and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rapid eye movement sleep (REM sleep) is a normal stage of sleep characterised by the random movement of the eyes. REM sleep is classified into two categories: tonic and phasic and criteria for REM sleep includes rapid eye movement, but also low muscle tone and a rapid, low-voltage EEG. REM sleep in adult humans typically occupies 20--25% of total sleep, about 90--120 minutes of a night's sleep. In this book, the authors present current research on REM sleep including the relationship of depression to REM sleep; neural regulation of REMs and the critical role of GABA-ergic inhibition; physiological effects and genotoxicity in humans and models corresponding to sleep deprivation; and the pathogenic mechanisms of sleep hallucinations.

Download or read book How to Read an EEG written by Neville M. Jadeja and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2021-07-15 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The EEG is a simple and widely available neurophysiological test that, if interpreted correctly, can provide valuable insight into the functioning of the brain. However, despite its increasing usage in a range of settings, there is a common misconception that the EEG is inherently difficult to interpret. Compounding the problem is the lack of dedicated training and no standardized approach by encephalographers. This book provides a clear and concise guide to reading and interpreting EEGs in a systematic way. Presented in three sections, the first delivers foundational technical knowledge of how EEGs work, and the second concentrates on a comprehensive, stepwise approach to reading and interpreting an EEG. The third section contains examples of EEGs in common scenarios, such as seizures and post-cardiac arrest, enabling readers to correlate their findings to clinical indications. Heavily illustrated with over 200 example EEGs, this is an essential pocket guide to interpreting these tests.

Book Rapid Eye Movement

Download or read book Rapid Eye Movement written by Peter Jaeger and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Rapid Eye Movement' follows a strict constraint: two bands of text run continuously throughout the book. The top band consists entirely of fragmented dream narratives recorded by historical and contemporary dreamers, while the lower band juxtaposes found material which includes the word "dream." No two sentences taken from the same source follow each other. As an investigation of the sign "dream" across a number of social discourses, including literature, psychoanalysis, advertising, popular culture, song lyrics, philosophy and religious literature, Rapid Eye Movement presents a record of our culture dreaming. "Jaeger dreams of the day when forestry operations can use balloon-based, skidding devices that float above the treetops and winch trees out of the forest without damaging the woodland floor. Jaeger dreams up some interesting shots. Jaeger dreams of peace. His book of dreams is not too different from a hope chest. His dreams are getting better all the time. His dreams are coming true."
