The Site Characterization and Analysis Penetrometer System (SCAPS) Ion Trap Mass Spectrometer - Membrane Interface Probe (ITMS-MIP) system was developed to respond to the need for real-time, in situ measurements of subsurface volatile organic compound (VOC) contamination at hazardous waste sites. The ITMS-MIP system performs rapid field screening to determine the presence or absence of subsurface volatile organic contaminants. The Membrane Interface Probe developed by Geoprobe Systems, Inc., was coupled with the direct sampling ITMS to provide in situ measurement of VOCs in the subsurface. The ITMS-MIP system was demonstrated at five geographically different hazardous waste sites. The ITMS-MIP was found to perform best in saturated soils. Results from the saturated zone show a good correlation with U.S. Environmental Protection Agency validation methods for co-located samples with a linear regression coefficient of 0.95 and a slope of 1.42 for trichloroethene. Correlations for vadose zone samples showed differences in soil types and moisture content. The ITMS-MIP was successfully demonstrated as a qualitative screening tool at these sites. The SCAPS ITMSS-MIP system was demonstrated to reduce the time and cost required to characterize sites by directing the placement of a reduced number of conventional soil bores and monitoring wells.

Book excerpt: A petroleum, oil and lubricant (POL) sensor for the Site Characterization and Analysis Penetrometer System (SCAPS) has been developed by the Tri-Services (e.g. Army, Navy, and Air Force) to characterize the distribution of POL contaminants on military sites. The sensor is based on the detection of POL contaminants using a laser induced fluorescence (LIF) spectrometer. The SCAPS POL sensor has been shown to be a valuable tool for the rapid screening of POL contamination in the subsurface. However, many factors can affect the LIF response of a particular fuel at a particular site. These include fuel type, age of spill (e.g. weathering) and soil type. The LIF sensor also detects fluorescence from any naturally occurring fluorophores, including humic substances and fluorescent minerals. these factors lead to the development of an independent procedure for the verification of the POL sensor response. This paper describes a field portable total recoverable petroleum hydrocarbon (TRPH) method based on EPA Method 418.1 and its application to on site validation of the SCAPS POL sensor response at a number of contaminated sites.

The last decade has seen growing interest in using aggressive source remediation technologies to remove contaminants from the subsurface, but there is limited understanding of (1) the effectiveness of these technologies and (2) the overall effect of mass removal on groundwater quality. This report reviews the suite of technologies available for source remediation and their ability to reach a variety of cleanup goals, from meeting regulatory standards for groundwater to reducing costs. The report proposes elements of a protocol for accomplishing source remediation that should enable project managers to decide whether and how to pursue source remediation at their sites.

The Hydrosparge VOC sensor was developed for the Tri-Services Site characterization and Analysis Penetrometer System (SCAPS) program to provide in situ VOC detection in ground waters. The system consists of a direct push well for groundwater access, an in situ sparge module, and a direct-sampling ion trop mass spectrometer. The Hydrosparge VOC sensor was tested at three geographically different sites across the country. The results obtained with the SCARS in situ technique indicate a strong linear relationship with EPA methods with regression coefficients ranging between 0.63 and 0.88 and the slope of the regression line between 1.1 and 1.2. The SCAPS Hydrosparge VOC sensor has been demonstrated to reduce the time and cost required to characterize sites by directing the placement of a reduced number of conventional monitoring wells.
