  • Author : Paul Joannides
  • Publisher : Thames & Hudson

  • ISBN : 0500776857
  • Pages : 479 pages

Download or read book Raphael written by Paul Joannides and published by Thames & Hudson. This book was released on 2022-07-07 with total page 479 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More versatile and less idiosyncratic than Michelangelo, more prolific and accessible than his mentor Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, though he died at only thirty-seven, is considered the single most influential artist of the Renaissance. Here, art historian Paul Joannides explores the different social and regional contexts of Raphaels work and discusses all aspects of his artistic output. He traces Raphaels career from his origins in Urbino, through his altarpieces made in Umbria in the shadow of Perugino, to the first flowering of his genius in Florence where he painted a series of iconic Madonnas that are among the most beloved images in Western art. Raphaels employment by the dynamic and demanding Pope Julius II gave him opportunities without parallel and encouraged the full expansion of his genius. As a sophisticate entrepreneur, he dominated Romes artistic life and extended the range of his activities to that of architect, designer, pioneer archaeologist and theoretician. The foundation of Raphaels versatility and range was his supreme clarity of mind as a draughtsman. Knowledge of his drawings, on which Joannides is a leading expert, is central to understanding of his achievement, and they are thoroughly explored here.

Book A Community of Witches

  • Author : Helen A. Berger
  • Publisher : Univ of South Carolina Press
  • Release : 2021-11-24
  • ISBN : 1643362879
  • Pages : 176 pages

Download or read book A Community of Witches written by Helen A. Berger and published by Univ of South Carolina Press. This book was released on 2021-11-24 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Community of Witches explores the beliefs and practices of Neo-Paganism and Witchcraft—generally known to scholars and practitioners as Wicca. While the words "magic," "witchcraft," and "paganism" evoke images of the distant past and remote cultures, this book shows that Wicca has emerged as part of a new religious movement that reflects the era in which it developed. Imported to the United States in the later 1960s from the United Kingdom, the religion absorbed into its basic fabric the social concerns of the time: feminism, environmentalism, self-development, alternative spirituality, and mistrust of authority. Helen A. Berger's ten-year participant observation study of Neo-Pagans and Witches on the eastern seaboard of the United States and her collaboration on a national survey of Neo-Pagans form the basis for exploring the practices, structures, and transformation of this nascent religion. Responding to scholars who suggest that Neo-Paganism is merely a pseudo religion or a cultural movement because it lacks central authority and clear boundaries, Berger contends that Neo-Paganism has many of the characteristics that one would expect of a religion born in late modernity: the appropriation of rituals from other cultures, a view of the universe as a cosmic whole, an emphasis on creating and re-creating the self, an intertwining of the personal and the political, and a certain playfulness. Aided by the Internet, self-published journals, and festivals and other gatherings, today's Neo-Pagans communicate with one another about social issues as well as ritual practices and magical rites. This community of interest—along with the aging of the original participants and the growing number of children born to Neo-Pagan families—is resulting in Neo-Paganism developing some of the marks of a mature and established religion.

Book The Witch s Qabalah

Download or read book The Witch s Qabalah written by Ellen Cannon Reed and published by Weiser Books. This book was released on 1997-09-01 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Because the classic writings on the Qabala have been expressed primarily in the terminology of the Western Mystery Tradition or in terms of the ceremonial magician, its usefulness as a tool for the Craft has been overlooked. With this book, Ellen Cannon Reed -- a High Priestess of the Isian tradition -- brings the symbolism of the Qabala into a new light so pagans can see its value and use it to enhance the Great Work. Reed explains the Tree of Life -- the primary symbol used to represent the universal energies as "revealed" by the Qabala -- and how its spheres and paths correspond to elements in the pagan tradition. Teachers can use the Qabala to understand the growth of students and their problems, using the Vices and Virtues to recognize stages of growth. Reed also provides exercises, meditations, and encouragement to students who are studying without a teacher. She discusses the Qabala as it appears in everyday life, which spheres of the Tree of Life to use for specific workings, and details two rituals using the Tree: a Dedication to the Journey, and the Rite of mending Love. Reed's command of the material allows teachers and students alike to gain powerful insight into their own search for spirituality. First published in 1983 as Witches Qabala Book 1: The Goddess and the Tree, this revised and updated edition is enhanced with Reed's thirteen additional years of experience.

Book Teenage Witches

    Book Details:
  • Author : Helen Berger
  • Publisher : Rutgers University Press
  • Release : 2007-05-08
  • ISBN : 0813541360
  • Pages : 298 pages

Download or read book Teenage Witches written by Helen Berger and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2007-05-08 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A popular new image of Witches has arisen in recent years, due largely to movies like The Craft, Practical Magic, and Simply Irresistible and television shows such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Sabrina the Teenage Witch, and Charmed. Here, young sexy Witches use magic and Witchcraft to gain control over their lives and fight evil. Then there is the depiction in the Harry Potter books: Witchcraft is a gift that unenlightened Muggles (everyday people) lack. In both types of portrayals, being a Witch is akin to being a superhero. At the other end of the spectrum, wary adults assume that Witches engage in evil practices that are misguided at best and dangerous at worst. Yet, as Helen A. Berger and Douglas Ezzy show in this in-depth look into the lives of teenage Witches, the reality of their practices, beliefs, values, and motivations is very different from the sensational depictions we see in popular culture. Drawing on extensive research across three countries--the United States, England, and Australia--and interviews with young people from diverse backgrounds, what they find are highly spiritual and self-reflective young men and women attempting to make sense of a postmodern world via a religion that celebrates the earth and emphasizes self-development. The authors trace the development of Neo-Paganism (an umbrella term used to distinguish earth-based religions from the pagan religions of ancient cultures) from its start in England during the 1940s, through its growing popularity in the decades that followed, up through its contemporary presence on the Internet. Though dispersed and disorganized, Neo-Pagan communities, virtual and real, are shown to be an important part of religious identity particularly for those seeking affirmation during the difficult years between childhood and adulthood.

Book Raphael and the Sword of Decision

Download or read book Raphael and the Sword of Decision written by Lisa Ann O'brien and published by Xlibris Us. This book was released on 2008-04-02 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is dedicated to all the young people who have experienced dramatic emotional changes in their lives. The changes that come about due to illness, family moves, a death in the family, divorce and remarriage of parents or acquiring new or stepbrothers and sisters can seem overwhelming, especially in preteen and teenage years. It is my desire to remind them that change is inevitable, but they are still and always dearly loved. The circumstances we experience are here as our teachers. Like the Willow we need to learn to be flexible, making the choices that result in the highest and best good. May you dear teens, grow into kind and loving light bearers in this oft-times dark world. Namaste, Lisa I would also like to give special thanks and acknowledgment to Ann Moura, for allowing me to use a portion of her Hand Fast Ritual, Long Version from pages 156-158 of her book Grimoire for the Green Witch. It is one of my favorite magical books, and I greatly appreciate her allowing me to use this excerpt. Thanks, again. Blessed Be.
