Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Fifth International Symposium on Nitrogen Fixation with Non-legumes was held in Florence (Italy) on 10-14 September, 1990. Earlier Symposia of this series were held in Piracicaba (Brazil), Banf Alberta (Canada), Helsinki (Finland) and Rio De Janeiro (Brazil). The Symposium's main objectives were to bring together scientists working in many different fields of nitrogen fixation, to stimulate discussion on this important process and to have an appraisal of the most recent studies concerning nitrogen fixation with non-legumes. The Symposium was attended by 230 scientists from 32 different countries. This volume collects the contributions of 65 lectures and 87 posters, which are an up-to-date account of the state of knowledge on biological nitrogen fixation with non-legumes. The book provides a valuable reference source not only for specialists in nitrogen fixation, but also for researchers working on related aspects of agronomy, biochemistry, genetics, microbiology, molecular biology and plant physiology. It is with great pleasure that we aknowledge the contributions of the authors in assuring the prompt pubblication of this volume. We would also like to express our thanks to Kluwer Academic Publishers B.V. for the publication of these Proceedings. M. Polsinelli R. Materassi M. Vincenzini ORGANIZING COMMITTEE President M. Book Advances in Microbiology

Download or read book Advances in Microbiology written by P.C. Trivedi and published by Scientific Publishers. This book was released on 2003-06-01 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Microbiologist have made significant contributions to basic biological sciences as well as in the applied areas of public health and medical sciences, agriculture, industry and environmental sciences. The most dramatic current development in applied microbiology is due to development of genetic engineering and recombinant DNA technology. The book "Advances in Microbiology" provides a comprehensive and critical review of the work done on different areas of microbiology including agriculture, industry, medical science, bioremediation etc. The book contains 24 chapters. Chapters cover information on the status of microbial diversity, application of biosensors, Azolla as biofertilizer, Frank/a - nitrogen fixing actinomycetes, extraction of metals from ores using bacteria, alkaliphiles, citirc acid fermentation, biodiversity of cyanobacteria, microbial degradation of xenobiotics etc. Aspects, covering biotechnological applications of microbes for improved plant productivity and new approaches for development of vaccines have been specially included to project their role and use in the twenty-first century. Comprehensive account of microbes in the management of soil borne diseases and plant parasitic nematodes throw light on the importance of microbes in the management of plant pests. This book will be useful to researchers, teachers and students of Microbiology, Botany, Zoology and Agriculture.

Book Biocontrol of Oilseed Rape Pests

Download or read book Biocontrol of Oilseed Rape Pests written by David V. Alford and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-04-15 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oilseed rape, a major crop in many parts of the world, is attackedby a wide range of insect pests, many of which are of considerableeconomic importance. With the increasing demand to reduceagrochemical inputs on arable crops, the Commission of the EuropeanCommunities supported a three-year programme in which scientificparticipants reviewed the natural enemies of oilseed rape insectpests. The various outputs from this important work form the basisof this comprehensive new book. Biocontrol of Oilseed Rape Pests commences with a reviewof the oilseed rape crop, followed by chapters on pests, pestmanagement strategies and parasitoids of specific pests or groupsof pests. Detailed information is also included on sampling, trapping and rearing pests, their parasitoids and predators; theidentification of hymenopterous parasitoids; pathogens of oilseedrape pests, predators, predator taxonomy and identification, andthe impact of on-farm landscape structures and systems onpredators. This book is an essential purchase for all those involved withoilseed rape and for anyone with an interest in agriculturalbiocontrol strategies. It is also essential reading and aninvaluable source of reference for agricultural scientists, entomologists, crop protection specialists, advisers andconsultants. All agrochemical companies should have multiple copiesof this book on their shelves, as should all libraries inuniversities and research establishments where biological andagricultural sciences are studied and taught. Dr David V. Alford, based in Cambridge, UK, has manyyears of experience working as a government entomologist.

Book Sustainable strategies for managing Brassica napus oilseed rape resistance to Leptosphaeria maculans phoma stem canker

Download or read book Sustainable strategies for managing Brassica napus oilseed rape resistance to Leptosphaeria maculans phoma stem canker written by B.D.L. Fitt and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-07-10 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Control of phoma stem canker in oil rapeseed crops typically depends on cultivars resistant to L. Maculans, the virus that causes it. Recently, virus populations have overcome resistance, causing serious canker outbreaks in Australia and Europe. There is an urgent need to find sources of resistance to L. maculans. This book synthesizes studies in management of resistance genes control L. maculans, and will stimulate further research on this important model system.
