Book Rantings of a Weedhead The Plight of an Idealist

Download or read book Rantings of a Weedhead The Plight of an Idealist written by S.S. B and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2015-10-03 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Did you ever one day wake up and realise that life, and that is to say ""living"" completely lacks meaning? You look about you and everything that there is to work for, and everything that there is to strive for, is not only entirely meaningless, but would slowly consume your soul? Because the value that is placed on these things far exceeds its true value, and the effort required to attain them therefore would find you withering away from your failure to perform, or losing yourself gradually in your desire to excel. When the ideal is but a dream, bordering on fairy tale, would you rather: a) Go to bed and keep dreaming b) Lose yourself in reality, or c) Charge ahead regardless? Jamaicans have a saying when taking tests, ""When in doubt, choose C."" This is something of a story of one idealistic weedhead, getting from the point of no meaning, to tasting for real the ideal.

Book Reading Song Lyrics

Download or read book Reading Song Lyrics written by Lars Eckstein and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reading Song Lyrics offers the first systematic introduction to lyrics as a vibrant genre of (performed) literature. It takes lyrics seriously as a complex form of verbal art that has been unjustly neglected in literary, music, and, to a lesser degree, cultural studies, partly as it cuts squarely across institutional boundaries. The first part of this book accordingly introduces a thoroughly transdisciplinary interpretive framework. It outlines theoretical approaches to issues such as performance and performativity, generic convention and cultural capital, sound and songfulness, mediality and musical multimedia, and step by step applies them to the example of a single song. The second part then offers three extended case studies which showcase the larger cultural and historical viability of this model. Probing into the relationship between lyrics and the ambivalent performance of national culture in Britain, it offers exemplary readings of a highly subversive 1597 ayre by John Dowland, of an 1811 broadside ballad about Sara Baartman, ‘The Hottentot Venus’, and of a 2000 song by ‘jungle punk’ collective Asian Dub Foundation. Reading Song Lyrics demonstrates how and why song lyrics matter as a paradigmatic art form in the culture of modernity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of all the plants men have ever grown, none has been praised and denounced as often as marihuana (Cannabis sativa). Throughout the ages, marihuana has been extolled as one of man's greatest benefactors and cursed as one of his greatest scourges. Marihuana is undoubtedly a herb that has been many things to many people. Armies and navies have used it to make war, men and women to make love. Hunters and fishermen have snared the most ferocious creatures, from the tiger to the shark, in its herculean weave. Fashion designers have dressed the most elegant women in its supple knit. Hangmen have snapped the necks of thieves and murderers with its fiber. Obstetricians have eased the pain of childbirth with its leaves. Farmers have crushed its seeds and used the oil within to light their lamps. Mourners have thrown its seeds into blazing fires and have had their sorrow transformed into blissful ecstasy by the fumes that filled the air. Marihuana has been known by many names: hemp, hashish, dagga, bhang, loco weed, grass-the list is endless. Formally christened Cannabis sativa in 1753 by Carl Linnaeus, marihuana is one of nature's hardiest specimens. It needs little care to thrive. One need not talk to it, sing to it, or play soothing tranquil Brahms lullabies to coax it to grow. It is as vigorous as a weed. It is ubiquitous. It fluorishes under nearly every possible climatic condition.

Marijuana Medicine explores the role of hemp in medicinal systems spanning the globe. Cannabis has accompanied the development of human culture from its very beginnings and can be found in the healing traditions of cultures throughout Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Americas. Even today it is an important part of many Asian healing traditions: in Ayurveda cannabis is praised for its tonic and aphrodisiac qualities and in traditional Chinese medicine it is cited as a superb antidepressant. It also remains a significant part of the healing and visionary traditions of Latin American curanderos and Brazilian, Nepalese, and Indian folk medicine. Modern research has confirmed the effectiveness of marijuana's application in treating such diseases as asthma and glaucoma. Christian Ratsch profiles the medicinal, historical, and cultural uses of cannabis in each of these societies and medical systems, providing remedies and recipes for those interested in how cannabis can be used to treat specific conditions.

Book The Decadent Handbook

Download or read book The Decadent Handbook written by Rowan Pelling and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 50 decadent courtiers contribute essays, stories, poems, reminiscences, and advice on decadent themes in an anti-lifestyle guide for the modern libertine. Readers can transform the spirit of the age, or failing that, ignore it altogether. Featuring contributions by the bad, dangerous and eccentric free spirits of contemporary society have chosen to be remunerated with Absinthe. Decadence here means a kind of colourfully reckless nonconformism. Nick Groom's essay on Decadent Outcasts, in which he demonstrates how the image of the decadent poet has been appropriated by the modern rock star, is not to your taste, then there is always Louise Welsh planning her own funeral to savour and enjoy - or Mick Brown's analysis of the film Performance, William Napier's guide to Roman Decadence in which he relates that the Emperor Heliogabulus's favourite foods were 'flamingos' brains and the head of parakeets', or Nicholas Royles noirish short story 'The Child', about a man sucked into a Mancunian underworld of cinephiles, sex parties and bent coppers. Maria Alvarez even suggest sthat decadence may turn out to be a little dull. In the end, she says, it becomes 'a state of aestheticised satiety.'
