This study encroaches in part on a field normally considered as the domain of Sociology. But the methods applied here are those of mathematical economics. It has not been my ambition to make this as general and as mathe matically demanding as possible. On the contrary, I wanted to present as simple an argument as possible throughout. I wish to thank Brown University for granting me a Sabbatical leave in the Fall of 1977-78 in the course of which I wrote the first draft of this monograph. I am also grateful to the late Professor Jacob Marschak and to Professor Arthur Geoffrion for sponsoring me as a Visiting Scholar of the Western Management Science Institute, Graduate School of Management, UCLA for the months of November and December 1977. The Western Management Science Institute proved to be an ideal environment for writing: protective and stimulating at the same time. I have benefitted specifically from comments received as a result of presenting Chapters IV and V in the Marschak Colloquium on December 2, 1977, in particular by Professors Intri11igator and Spiro. My greatest indebtedness is to Jacob Marschak to whom I owe my awareness of and interest in the economic theory of organizations. He was my teacher, my director and supervisor, and my fatherly friend since 1950. It is thus entirely fitting that this work should be dedicated to his memory.

Millions participated in one of the largest strike waves in US history. There were 5,716 stoppages in 1970 alone, involving more than 3 million workers. Contract rejections, collective insubordination, sabotage, organized slowdowns, and wildcat strikes were the order of the day. Workers targeted much of their activity at union leaders, forming caucuses to fight for more democratic and combative unions that would forcefully resist the mounting offensive from employers that appeared at the end of the postwar economic boom. Book excerpt: The purpose of this quantitative, correlational research was to examine to what extent a relationship existed between attributes associated with the Level 5 hierarchy and corporate rank on the Best Workplaces List published by the Great Places to Work Institute. The study included a sample of 35 chief executive officers (CEOs) whose organizations were ranked among the 2012 best workplaces in the United States. Study participants completed two self-report instruments in the form of mailed survey questionnaires. The adapted Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire, and the Trait Component of the adapted Personal Value Scale measured the trait and behavior components of the Level 5 hierarchy, and companies of participants were categorized by size and ranked based on the Best workplace List. The Spearman's rank correlation coefficient was used to determine the magnitude and direction of the relationship between the variables of interest. The findings of this study indicated no significant relationships between the trait and behavioral components of the Level 5 hierarchy and corporate ranking for the small and midsized companies. However, one significant, positive correlation between the behavioral component (management-by-exception) and midsized business best workplace companies (rs (9) = .684, p ≤ .05) was observed. Overall, the findings of this study do not support the relationship between Level 5 hierarchy leadership attributes of CEOs and corporate ranking of best workplaces. The small sample size was the primary confounding factor, and therefore additional research is warranted with a larger sample.
