Book Range Wide Assessment of Livestock Grazing Across the Sagebrush Biome

Download or read book Range Wide Assessment of Livestock Grazing Across the Sagebrush Biome written by U.S. Department of the Interior and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2014-03-30 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Domestic livestock grazing occurs in virtually all sagebrush habitats and is a prominent disturbance factor. By affecting habitat condition and trend, grazing influences the resources required by, and thus, the distribution and abundance of sagebrush-obligate wildlife species (for example, sage-grouse Centrocercus spp.). Yet, the risks that livestock grazing may pose to these species and their habitats are not always clear. Although livestock grazing intensity and associated habitat condition may be known in many places at the local level, we have not yet been able to answer questions about use, condition, and trend at the landscape scale or at the range-wide scale for wildlife species.

Book The Environmental Case

Download or read book The Environmental Case written by Judith A. Layzer and published by CQ Press. This book was released on 2015-09-18 with total page 633 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Answers to environmental issues are not black and white. Debates around policy are often among those with fundamentally different values, and the way that problems and solutions are defined plays a central role in shaping how those values are translated into policy. The Environmental Case captures the real-world complexity of creating environmental policy, and this much-anticipated Fourth Edition contains fifteen carefully constructed cases. Through her analysis, Editor Judith Layzer systematically explores the background, players, contributing factors, and outcomes of each case, and gives readers insight into some of the most interesting and controversial issues in U.S. environmental policymaking.

Book Responses of Plant Communities to Grazing in the Southwestern United States

Download or read book Responses of Plant Communities to Grazing in the Southwestern United States written by Daniel G. Milchunas and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grazing by wild and domestic mammals can have small to large effects on plant communities, depending on characteristics of the particular community and of the type and intensity of grazing. The broad objective of this report was to extensively review literature on the effects of grazing on 25 plant communities of the southwestern U.S. in terms of plant species composition, aboveground primary productivity, and root and soil attributes. Livestock grazing management and grazing systems are assessed, as are effects of small and large native mammals and feral species, when data are available. Emphasis is placed on the evolutionary history of grazing and productivity of the particular communities as determinants of response. After reviewing available studies for each community type, we compare changes in species composition with grazing among community types. Comparisons are also made between southwestern communities with a relatively short history of grazing and communities of the adjacent Great Plains with a long evolutionary history of grazing. Evidence for grazing as a factor in shifts from grasslands to shrublands is considered. An appendix outlines a new community classification system, which is followed in describing grazing impacts in prior sections.

Book Rangeland Health

Download or read book Rangeland Health written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1994-02-01 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rangelands comprise between 40 and 50 percent of all U.S. land and serve the nation both as productive areas for wildlife, recreational use, and livestock grazing and as watersheds. The health and management of rangelands have been matters for scientific inquiry and public debate since the 1880s, when reports of widespread range degradation and livestock losses led to the first attempts to inventory and classify rangelands. Scientists are now questioning the utility of current methods of rangeland classification and inventory, as well as the data available to determine whether rangelands are being degraded. These experts, who are using the same methods and data, have come to different conclusions. This book examines the scientific basis of methods used by federal agencies to inventory, classify, and monitor rangelands; it assesses the success of these methods; and it recommends improvements. The book's findings and recommendations are of interest to the public; scientists; ranchers; and local, state, and federal policymakers.

Book Sagebrush Biome

Download or read book Sagebrush Biome written by and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sagebrush biome is the largest habitat type in North America, spanning 175 million acres in 13 western states. The USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service’s (NRCS) Working Lands for Wildlife (WLFW) team developed a science-based framework to provide the common vision and coordination necessary to address resource concerns and ecosystem threats across boundaries in the sagebrush biome. The framework helps guide and target Farm Bill conservation actions spanning multiple states and focal species from 2021-25. Threats addressed by this framework include: 1) Exotic annual grass invasion; 2) Land use conversion (cropland conversion/subdivision); 3) Woodland expansion (conifer); 4) Riparian and wet meadow degradation. The framework uses a core area approach to build on past conservation efforts in addressing threats impacting sagebrush rangelands accomplished through the Sage Grouse Initiative. A combination of conservation practices, easements, and proper livestock grazing management are used to conserve and restore the landscape. This WLFW Sagebrush Biome framework for western rangeland shares the vision of achieving "Wildlife Conservation Through Sustainable Ranching," to benefit people, wildlife, and rural communities.
