Book Composition of Common California Foothill Plants as a Factor in Range Management Classic Reprint

Download or read book Composition of Common California Foothill Plants as a Factor in Range Management Classic Reprint written by Aaron Gordon and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-12-28 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Composition of Common California Foothill Plants as a Factor in Range Management This bulletin reports a study of chemical characteristics of certain foot hill range plants commonly found in the interior valleys and on the coastal strip of California. Information obtained from such investigations should point the way to a more scientific approach to range revegetation and maintenance, and to a more accurate evaluation of the carrying capacity of the range. In half a century of grazing by domestic livestock conspicuous changes have taken place in the plant population of this vast grass-woodland area. In many instances the carrying capacity has declined sharply, and a portion of the top soil has been removed. Evidence points to the fact that a substantial proportion of the original perennial graminaceous species has been replaced by annual exotic grasses and other herbs of southern Europe; this accounts for the inclusion of many such species in this study. So conspicuous has been this transformation that future grazing management plans must be focused largely upon this relatively early-maturing vegetation. This book was released on 2018-09-12 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Check List of Plants of the San Joaquin Experimental Range The San Joaquin Experimental Range is located near the center of the State in the granite-soil section of the Sierra Nevada foothills. It is in Madera County, 28 miles north of Fresno, California. This h6oo-acre experimental area was established in 193k as a branch station of the California Forest and Range Experiment Station, U. 8. Forest Service. Research aimed at increased production from California foothill range through improved management, fertilization, brush control, and livestock management has been carried out since establishment. The area lies in the annual grass type and is characterized by grassy rolling hills with a sparse covering of trees and occasional dense stands of brush. It is in the lower part of the woodland zone between the treeless valley floor and the higher brush and timber belts. The herbaceous ground cover consists mostly of annual grasses and forbs. In contrast, perennials dominate most western range areas. Ecologically speaking, the area is near the lower limits of the Upper Sonoran Zone. The elevation varies from 700 to 1700 feet, with most of the area lying between 1000 and 1500 feet. Exposures are generally southwesterly. Included are numerous line-drawings, plus identification keys, a glossary, and a checklist to the state's more than 400 grass species. Introductory chapters describe the various grass-dominated habitats of California and discuss their status and management. Book Stock Poisoning Plants of California Classic Reprint

Download or read book Stock Poisoning Plants of California Classic Reprint written by Arthur William Sampson and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-30 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stock-Poisoning Plants of California The writers have chosen to define a poisonous plant as one containing some specific substance which, when eaten in sufficient quantity may pro duce a morbid, noxious, or deadly effect on the animal. When the result is only illness the effect is spoken of as toxic; and when death ensues the dosage is referred to as lethal. Merely mechanically injurious plants, such as some grasses, with prominent, penetrating awns, and those which occasionally cause bloat, like the clovers, are not included in this paper. The chief object of this bulletin is to summarize the present knowl edge and field observations of the stock-poisoning plants of the state. Although the total number of poisonous species occurring on ranges of California is large, most of the deaths among range livestock are caused by species embraced in relatively few genera. In order to bring to the stockman's attention the poisonous species most. Generally harmful on the range, the material has been segregated into three parts. The plants of primary importance are discussed in the first section. Then those of secondary consideration are presented. The third section includes the plants which are more local or which cause only occasional livestock losses. When discussed at length the material under the first two groups is treated systematically under the following headings: Description and distribution of the genus; description of species; nature of injury and animals affected; and preventive measures. Maps showing in detail the distribution over the state of the more im portant species, accompany the descriptive material.
