Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'I was born on a bloody road. The blood was my mother's. My sisters couldn't find a midwife in time. There was no way my mother could get relief from the upper-caste well, and so they tell me, that my sisters ran to some puddles to fill their little mouths up and then ran back to where my mother was almost dying of pain and then spat out some water on her face and the rest down below on mine. That is how I came into this world.' Someone is disposing of politicians one by one. And the murderer has borrowed from the genius of Agatha Christie. When a local Mumbai politician is found wrapped in a plastic bag behind a park bench, the dashing and capable DIG Ajay Biswas is told to take over the case. Ajay arrives in Mumbai along with his wife Aparajita and soon discovers he is being misled by his Mumbai compatriots who are determined to save their own skin. Someone is deliberately providing false leads; his presence is not wanted. While in Mumbai, Ajay and Aparajita meet up with their old college friend Akhil Sukumar. Akhil and Aparajita have had a tortuous history, and it appears that the one-time lovers now want nothing more than to let bygones be bygones. Easier said. From the barren lands of rural India to the immaculate lawns of Cambridge, The Rat Eater is a book whose uninhibitedness may offend purists as it lays bare a few uncomfortable truths about India-a country entangled in a web of caste, corruption and cover-ups. The privileged flourish at the cost of the oppressed. The price has to be paid, and someone has decided that it needs to be paid in blood.

  • Pages : 263 pages

Book excerpt: Hinduism: A Contemporary Philosophical Investigation explores Hinduism and the distinction between the secular and religious on a global scale. According to Ranganathan, a careful philosophical study of Hinduism reveals it as the microcosm of philosophical disagreements with Indian resources, across a variety of topics, including: ethics, logic, the philosophy of thought, epistemology, moral standing, metaphysics, and politics. This analysis offers an original and fresh diagnosis of studying Hinduism, colonialism, and a global rise of hyper-nationalism, as well as the frequent acrimony between scholars and practitioners of Hindu traditions. This text is appropriate for use in undergraduate and graduate courses on Hinduism, and Indian philosophy, and can be used as an advanced introduction to the problems of philosophy with South Asian resources.

Book Straight Outta Crawley

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER Straight Outta Crawley is the hilarious and irreverent autobiography from comedian Romesh Ranganathan. 'Very, very funny. I can't recommend it highly enough.' Jonathan Ross _________________________________ At the age of 9, Romesh Ranganathan delivered his first ever stand-up set at a Pontin's holiday camp talent competition, smashing the other competitor, a young girl playing the kazoo. The gig went so well that Romesh retired his comic genius for twenty-two years, hiding behind the guise of a maths teacher, before finally revealing himself again (no, not like that) at the tender age of 31. In 2010, Ranganathan staged his epic comeback gig to an almost silent room, and has since gone on to earn his place as the most in-demand overweight vegan Sri Lankan comedian in Britain. Now, for the first time, he tells the full story of how he got here. From the delights of Sri Lankan hospitality to his struggles as a child, teacher and now parent, to his adolescent flirtation with a rap career and his attempts to make it in comedy, Straight Outta Crawley is Ranganathan's hilarious and irreverent autobiography. Have you read Romesh's latest book? As Good As It Gets: Life Lessons from a Reluctant Adult is Romesh Ranganathan's hilarious and painfully accurate dissection of what it really means to grow up.

Book Library Administration

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Works of Dr. Shiyali Ramamrita Ranganathan (S.R. Ranganathan) need no introduction. They are renowned not because they cover certain facet of library and information science, but because they have been written by the father of library science in india, Dr. Ranganathan. These library science classics have been reprinted to make Dr. Ranganathan's work available to the current generation of librarians and for those to come. The book is a remarkable illustration of the application of systems analysis, study of work flow, and time and motion study to libraries. It also illustrates the need for the library manager and management to pay attention to the minutae of library work and at the same to have a holistic view of library's functions. It is only very appropriate that Ranganathan provides an extract from the 'Mother' (page 66-72) by the mystic Shri Aurobindo to support this holistic approach to library administration.

Book Ethics and the History of Indian Philosophy

Download or read book Ethics and the History of Indian Philosophy written by Shyam Ranganathan and published by Motilal Banarsidass Publishe. This book was released on 2007 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ethics and the History of Indian Philosophy, by Shyam Ranganathan, presents a compelling, systematic explication of the moral philosophical content of history of Indian philosophy in contrast to the received wisdom in Indology and comparative philosophy that Indian philosophers were scarcely interested in ethics. Unlike most works on the topic, this book makes a case for the positive place of ethics in the history of Indian philosophy by drawing upon recent work in metaethics and metamorality, and by providing a through analysis of the meaning of moral concepts and PHILOSOPHY itself- in addition to explicating the texts of Indian authors. In Ranganathan`s account, Indian philosophy shines with distinct options in ethics that find their likeness in the writings of the Ancient in the West, such as Plato and the Neo-Platonists, and not in the anthropocentric or positivistic options that have dominated the recent Western tradition.

Book The Bloomsbury Research Handbook of Indian Ethics

Download or read book The Bloomsbury Research Handbook of Indian Ethics written by Shyam Ranganathan and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2016-11-17 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Featuring leading scholars from philosophy and religious studies, The Bloomsbury Research Handbook of Indian Ethics dispels the myth that Indian thinkers and philosophers were uninterested in ethics. This comprehensive research handbook traces Indian moral philosophy through classical, scholastic Indian philosophy, pan-Indian literature including the Epics, Ayurvedic medical ethics, as well as recent, traditionalist and Neo-Hindu contributions. Contrary to the usual myths about India (that Indians were too busy being religious to care about ethics), moral theory constitutes the paradigmatic differentia of formal Indian philosophy, and is reflected richly in popular literature. Many of the papers make this clear by an analytic explication that draws critical comparisons and contrasts between classical Indian moral philosophy and contemporary contributions to ethics. By critically addressing ethics as a sub-discipline of philosophy and acknowledging the mistaken marginalization of Indian moral philosophy, this handbook reveals how Indian contributions can illuminate contemporary philosophical research on ethics. Unlike previous approaches to Indian ethics, this volume is organized in accordance with major topics in moral philosophy. The volume contains an extended introduction, exploring topics in moral semantics, the philosophy of thought, (metaethical and normative) ethical theory, and the politics of scholarship, which serve to show how the diversity of Indian moral philosophy is a contribution to the discipline of ethics. With an overview of Indian moral theory, and a glossary, this is a valuable guide to understanding the past, present and future research directions of a central component of Indian philosophy.

Book Prolegomena to Library Classification

Download or read book Prolegomena to Library Classification written by S. R. Ranganathan and published by Ess Ess Publication. This book was released on 2006-04 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Works of Dr. Shiyali Ramamrita Ranganathan (S.R. Ranganathan) need no introduction. These library science classics have been reprinted to make Dr. Ranganathan's work available to the current generation of librarians and for those to come. The ideas contained in this book form the foundation of subject classification and the book is S.R. Ranganathan's magnum opus in that field. "A most precise, theoretical, practical, and comparative exposition of library classification theory ... intensely original. It is not within my space here to say in what ways it over-rode many of the obstacles to real understanding of the art of analyzing and assembling books; that the student will discover by the rewarding study of the book itself" (In Preface to edition 2 by W.C. Berwick Sayers). In the present digital age, Ranganathan's ideas on subject classification provide guidelines for the organization of knowledge in whatever medium, including digital, audio, video forms and the www, that knowledge may be embodied . "... in homage to Ranganathan, I believe he, more than any other scholar of our discipline, has striven to establish classification upon a scientific foundation." (Dr. Elaine Svenonius, former Professor, UCLA, in Libri, v.42, No. 3 (1992); p. 176)
