Book Random Wave Analysis of Ship Ramp Barge Response

Download or read book Random Wave Analysis of Ship Ramp Barge Response written by Dimitrios S. Konstantinou and published by . This book was released on 2000-09 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A mathematical model describing the fundamental physics of a ship/ ramp/barge system, including a passive isolator, is developed. The model properly accounts for hydrodynamic proximity effects and structural coupling between the bodies. A standard second order model is used, for demonstration purposes, in order to model the frequency response properties of the connecting body. Parametric studies of the response amplitude operator of the ramp motion are performed for varying wave directions and isolator stiffness and damping. These are utilized for the random wave analysis in standard fully developed seas. The results indicate that rational selection of isolator properties can result in significant reduction of motions and stress levels in the connecting ramp.

Book Ship Structural Response Analysis

Download or read book Ship Structural Response Analysis written by Bernie P. Phelps and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wave loading of ships and maritime structures is a random process and the response of these structures is itself a random process. Much work has been undertaken to better understand the nature of waves and a number of existing techniques are described. Statistical and spectral analysis techniques may be used to quantify the wave loads and the corresponding structural responses. The relationship between the input load and response may then be determined through the use of response amplitude operators and the response of the structure to predicted lifetime extreme loads and fatigue loading then calculated. Standard wave spectra and directional spreading factors are used to enable the seaway to be described mathematically and several standard forms are discussed. The use of statistical methods enables the seaway to be described in terms of a limited number of parameters from which short term and long term probability distributions may be obtained. These distributions may then be used to enable extreme lifetime loads to be estimated.

Book Nonlinear Response and Stability Analysis of Vessel Rolling Motion in Random Waves Using Stochastic Dynamical Systems

Download or read book Nonlinear Response and Stability Analysis of Vessel Rolling Motion in Random Waves Using Stochastic Dynamical Systems written by Zhiyong Su and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Response and stability of vessel rolling motion with strongly nonlinear softening stiffness will be studied in this dissertation using the methods of stochastic dynamical systems. As one of the most classic stability failure modes of vessel dynamics, large amplitude rolling motion in random beam waves has been studied in the past decades by many different research groups. Due to the strongly nonlinear softening stiffness and the stochastic excitation, there is still no general approach to predict the large amplitude rolling response and capsizing phenomena. We studied the rolling problem respectively using the shaping filter technique, stochastic averaging of the energy envelope and the stochastic Melnikov function. The shaping filter technique introduces some additional Gaussian filter variables to transform Gaussian white noise to colored noise in order to satisfy the Markov properties. In addition, we developed an automatic cumulant neglect tool to predict the response of the high dimensional dynamical system with higher order neglect. However, if the system has any jump phenomena, the cumulant neglect method may fail to predict the true response. The stochastic averaging of the energy envelope and the Melnikov function both have been applied to the rolling problem before, it is our first attempt to apply both approaches to the same vessel and compare their efficiency and capability. The inverse of the mean first passage time based on Markov theory and rate of phase space flux based on the stochastic Melnikov function are defined as two different, but analogous capsizing criteria. The effects of linear and nonlinear damping and wave characteristic frequency are studied to compare these two criteria. Further investigation of the relationship between the Markov and Melnikov based method is needed to explain the difference and similarity between the two capsizing criteria.

Book The Effects of Wave Groups on the Nonlinear Simulation of Ship Motion in Random Seas

Download or read book The Effects of Wave Groups on the Nonlinear Simulation of Ship Motion in Random Seas written by Jeffrey A. Richer and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historically, the analysis of ship motion and loading responses has been performed in the frequency domain with both linear response amplitude operators and wave energy density spectra. This method, therefore, did not account for the nonlinear nature of waves. A more precise method is to obtain the response in the time domain, processing non-linear wave data with a linear response amplitude operator. Since the input is non-linear, even though the system is linear, the output will also be non-linear. This resultant data can then be used to generate a more accurate design of seaworthy vessels. Furthermore the linear frequency domain method does not account for the presence or effects of wave groups. This study shows the improved accuracy in the response obtained by accounting for non-linearities and furthermore indicates that wave groups affect the vertical relative motion of a moored ship (zero-speed).

Book Twenty Second Symposium on Naval Hydrodynamics

Download or read book Twenty Second Symposium on Naval Hydrodynamics written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2000-03-02 with total page 1039 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Twenty-Second Symposium on Naval Hydrodynamics was held in Washington, D.C., from August 9-14, 1998. It coincided with the 100th anniversary of the David Taylor Model Basin. This international symposium was organized jointly by the Office of Naval Research (Mechanics and Energy Conversion S&T Division), the National Research Council (Naval Studies Board), and the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division (David Taylor Model Basin). This biennial symposium promotes the technical exchange of naval research developments of common interest to all the countries of the world. The forum encourages both formal and informal discussion of the presented papers, and the occasion provides an opportunity for direct communication between international peers.

Book Response Amplitude Operators and Whipping Response of a Carrier Model in Random Waves

Download or read book Response Amplitude Operators and Whipping Response of a Carrier Model in Random Waves written by John N. Andrews and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tests of a 6-ft model of an ESSEX-Class carrier were conducted in various sea states in head seas only at speeds of zero and 13.8 knots (full-scale) in the 140-foot basin at the Naval Ship Research and Development Center (NSRDC). Response amplitude operators (RAOs) for bending moment amidships and pitch angle were derived from the ratio of the response and wave spectra for each sea state and speed. The effect of speed on the magnitude of the RAOs was sufficiently small that for each response, a single RAO could be employed to characterize ship response to a given sea condition. (Author).
