Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The geographic heart of North Carolina, Randolph County has been at the crossroads of history since the 17th century, when explorers first arrived along the Great Indian Trading Path. Every variety of religion, creed, and color could be found in the county from its creation in 1779, with combinations that often proved volatile. From the Uwharrie Mountains in the west to the Deep River Valley on the east, Randolph County has been home to powerful opposing forces. It is a county where potters are more common than doctors. It is home to five of North Carolina’s first textile mills, yet it remains one of the state’s leading agricultural producers. Its residents refused to secede from the Union but sent six companies into Confederate service. Although settled by pacifist Quakers, bitter guerrilla warfare pitted neighbor against neighbor in both the American Revolution and the Civil War. A dry county that permits no sales of alcoholic beverages, it fostered the racing spirit of NASCAR by running moonshine along its back roads. It is a county with a history, politics, and people of vision, depth, and complexity.

Book Miles Lassiter Circa 1777 1850

Download or read book Miles Lassiter Circa 1777 1850 written by Margo Lee Williams and published by Backintyme. This book was released on 2011 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although antebellum African Americans were sometimes allowed to attend Quaker meetings, they were almost never admitted to full meeting membership, as was Miles Lassiter. His story illuminates the unfolding of the 19th-century color line into the 20th. Margo Williams had only a handful of stories and a few names her mother remembered from her childhood about her family's home in Asheboro, North Carolina. Her research would soon help her to make contact with long lost relatives and a pilgrimage "home" with her mother in 1982. Little did she know she would discover a large loving family and a Quaker ancestor -- a Black Quaker ancestor. -- Publisher's description.

Book excerpt: Following the Glorious Revolution, the supporters of the House of Stuart, known as Jacobites, could be found throughout the British Isles. The Scottish county of Angus, or Forfarshire, made a significant contribution to the Jacobite armies of 1715 and 1745. David Dobson has compiled a list of about 900 persons--including not only soldiers but also civilians who lent crucial support to the rebellion. Arranged alphabetically, the entries always give the full name of the Jacobite, his occupation, his rank, date of service and unit (if military), and, sometimes, the individual's date of birth, the names of his parents, a specific place of origin, and a wide range of destinations to which the Jacobites fled after each of the failed insurrections.

Turner in 1914 recalling his experiences, and information on the company battle flag, its capture and its eventual return.
