Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Set in the foothills of the Santa Ana Mountains, Rancho Santa Margarita is a vibrant city with the unique quality of an urban village. Although incorporated on January 1, 2000, making it one of California's youngest cities, it has a rich and intriguing history that dates back to the origins of the Golden State. During the late 1800s, the original ranch covered 230,000 acres, making it one of the largest in the Southwest. With many never-before-seen images, this book captures the essence of this fascinating story of the city, including the Spanish expedition in the 1700s, the Mexican governance of the land, the ownership of the area by the O'Neill family, the ranch activities of the 1960s, and the building of city landmarks in the 1980s, including the development of the most scenic lake in Orange County.

Book Rancho Santa Margarita Remembered

Download or read book Rancho Santa Margarita Remembered written by Jerome O'Neill Baumgartner and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One weekend in 1974, Jerome Baumgartner sat with his father and listened to stories of his childhood on the Santa Margarita Ranch. Jerome had heard these stories many times before, but this time was different: this time there was a tape recorder going. That weekend was the first session of what was to become a remarkable oral history of one of the biggest and most important ranchos in California history, a quarter-million acre ranch with tens of thousands of cattle and hundreds of horses, not to mention vaqueros, Chinese cooks, and a vast extended family of remarkable people. But Rancho Margarita Remembered is not just a history of a Southern California cattle ranch. More important, it is the recorded memory of a child's view of a unique period of history of rural America - the first twenty years of the twentieth century - and what it was like to grow up in those times.

Book excerpt: Santa Margarita de Cortona was founded in 1775 as part of the original Spanish mission system. Its asistencia, in fact, has been considered a lost mission. Santa Margarita Ranch was later founded from a Mexican land grant. In 1889, the arrival of the Southern Pacific Railroad, with its terminus in Santa Margarita, created a boomtown with dance halls, blacksmiths, hotels, pool halls, saloons, and a jail. And with the popularity of auto travel half a century later, Santa Margarita was once again revitalized with garages, gas stations, motor inns, restaurants, and bars. It fell into a deep sleep, however, as Highway 101 bypassed the town in the mid-1950s. Landlocked by the 17,000-plus-acre Santa Margarita Ranch, the town has remained frozen in time until recently.

Book excerpt: During 1873 a jury trial took place in San Diego to decide whether Pio Pico, the last Mexican governor of California, had been the victim of a fraud by his brother-in-law, John Forster. Pico claimed title to the huge Rancho Santa Margarita y Las Flores land grant in southern California, located approximately 208 square miles north of San Diego on the California coastline, and today occupied by Camp Pendleton. Pico's battle to retain that grant in the face of formidable legal challenges from John Forster and others, provides an absorbing view of California during its transitional era and Americanization. The introductory chapters are a sweeping view of early California history with an account of the important roles the Pico family and John Forster played in it. Based on meticulous research, including many records, letters, and photographs never before published, the intimate lives and foibles of some of California's most colorful historical figures are examined in unprecedented detail. After a full description of the trial, a definitive analysis of the evidence is given which proves that the controversial verdict should have been different. The underlying circumstances and motives of the struggle between Forster and Pico are fully explained.

Book Historic Spots in California

Download or read book Historic Spots in California written by Douglas Kyle and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2002-09-06 with total page 661 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The only complete guide to the historical landmarks of California, this standard work has now been thoroughly revised and updated. The edition is enriched by some 200 photographs, most of which were taken by the reviser and all of which are new to this edition. Since the last revision in 1990, enormous changes have taken place within the state: many landscapes and buildings have been greatly altered and some are no longer in existence. Every effort has been made, through personal observation, to record the present condition of the landmarks and to provide clear and accurate descriptions of their locations. The text is written with the idea that the reader might use the book while traveling around the state, and thus mileage and signposts have been given where it was thought helpful. For this new edition, the reviser has added additional information on the state's geography, the presence of Native Americans, and state and local museums. To provide historical background, the reviser has written a short historical overview. The chapters of the book are organized by county, in alphabetical order. A rough chronology is followed for each county, beginning with pertinent facts on geography, continuing with Native American life, the coming of the Spaniards and other Europeans, the American conquest of the 1840s, and, in those areas where it had a major impact, the gold rush. The text then continues into the period of intensive agricultural development, railroads, industrialization, the growth of cities, the effects of World War II, and on into more recent times. The bibliography, like the text, has been updated to 2001 and includes some of the established classics in California history as well as more recent material. Reviews of the Fourth Edition "Prodigious in detail and scope, this is the definitive guide to historical landmarks in California and a valuable resource not only for travelers but also for anyone interested in California history." —California Highways "This is an outstanding and accessible piece of scholarship, one that every student of California will value." —San Francisco Chronicle "Kyle and Stanford University Press are to be lauded for this monumental undertaking." —Southern California Quarterly
