Book excerpt: Ayodhya tussle - For Hindus, Ram Janma Bhoomi is a "Place of Veneration" and for Muslims, Babri Masjid is a "Place of Ritual Prostration". The Babri Masjid (Mosque of Babur), the Tughlaq-style mosque, was built in 1528 by General Mir Baqi on the orders of Zahir-ud-din Muhammad Babur, the founder and first emperor of the Mughal dynasty in the Indian subcontinent. The building is facile with Islamic architectural elements but devoid of minarets (Call Towers for prayers), etc. The Babri Masjid was neither a mausoleum nor a cenotaph. The placing of Ram Lalla Idol on December 22, 1949 inside the Babri Masjid Central Dome became the aggravating point of the title dispute. The blood-curdling Ram-Janma-Bhoomi-Babri-Masjid dispute is over a tiny area of 2.77 acres of land out of the 3.287 million square kilometre vast tract of India. Solutions from the erstwhile British rulers and Indian Prime Ministers found no results. At last, it was the reign of the 14th Prime Minister of India, Mr. Narendra Damodardas Modi, that witnessed the lawful solution - amicable both for the Hindus and for the Muslims. Now, the golden era of peace and prosperity, brotherhood and tolerance has blossomed in the Indian soil. The "Basic Structure" (Justice, Liberty, Equality and Fraternity) enshrined in the Preamble of the Indian Constitution has been reaffirmed by this landmark judgment. We can assert that this book takes you to the inroads of the cementing facts and figures of the Ayodhya Dispute unravelled by this unanimous historical judgment of the Supreme Court of India.

Prime Minister Modi was himself a career RSS office-holder, or pracharak. This book explores how the RSS and its affiliates have benefitted from India's economic development and concurrent social dislocation, with rapid modernization creating a sense of rootlessness, disrupting traditional hierarchies, and attracting many upwardly mobile groups to the organization. India seems more willing than ever to accept the RSS's narrative of Hindu nationalism--one that seeks to assimilate Hindus into a common identity representing true 'Indianness'. Yet the RSS has also come to resemble 'the Congress system', with a socially diverse membership containing a distinct left, right and center. The organization's most significant dilemma is how to reconcile the assault from its far right on cultural issues like cow protection with condemnations of globalization from the left flank. Naipaul, Salman Rushdie, Amitav Ghosh, and Anita Desai. Concentrating on the intertwined topics of nationalism, transnationalism, and fundamentalism, the book addresses the dislocation associated with these phenomena, offering a critical dialogue between these works and contemporary history, using history to interrogate fiction and fiction to think through historical issues. Despite all their differences, the works of these authors delineate the asymmetrical relations of colonialism and the aftermath of this phenomenon as it is manifested across the globe. The binary structures created by the colonial encounter undergo a process of dialectical interplay in which each culture makes incursions into the other. This dialogic interplay becomes the basis for strategies that enable transnational and postcolonial writers to reimagine themselves and their world. The book shows, for instance, how Naipaul articulates a sensibility created by multilayered identities and the remapping of old imperial landscapes, in the process suggesting a new dynamic of power relations in which politics and selfhood, empire and psychology, prove to be profoundly interrelated; how Rushdie encourages a nationalist self-imagining and a rewriting of history that incorporate profound cultural, religious, and linguistic differences into our sense of identity; how Ghosh is critical of the putative cultural and religious necessity to forge a unified nationalist identity, arguing that no single theory sufficiently frames the multiple inheritances of present diasporic subjectivities; and how Desai seeks to imagine a responsible form of artistic, social, and political agency. Although transnationalism, then, can have positive effects, which have been celebrated in terms such as hybridity, the book suggests why this sort of term, too, cannot be a stopping-place for our thinking about a world radically transformed by postcolonial struggles.

Historically, the overlaps between Hinduism and Islam bolstered the narrative that the Muslims were culturally inferior to the Hindus and that Hinduism was India’s unifying tradition. As a result, for many Hindus, emphasizing the distinctiveness of a minority group, especially the Muslims, represents a threat to Hindu superiority and India’s cultural integrity. With the rise of the BJP, AAP, and TMC, we witness a tussle between two strains of Hindu nativism. The BJP attempts to attract the Hindu vote by heightening the differences between Hindus and Muslims and portraying itself as the restorer of national integrity. The AAP and TMC revive a much older form of cultural nativism by downplaying the separateness of the Muslims, indicating that India is already a Hindu nation and that there is no need to persecute religious minorities.
