Book Rameau and Musical Thought in the Enlightenment

Download or read book Rameau and Musical Thought in the Enlightenment written by Thomas Christensen and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-12-16 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Ranging widely over the musical and intellectual thought of the eighteenth century, Thomas Christensen orients Rameau's accomplishments in the light of contemporaneous traditions of music theory as well as many of the scientific ideas current in the French Enlightenment. Rameau is revealed to be an unsuspectedly syncretic and sophisticated thinker, betraying influences ranging from neoplatonic thought and Cartesian mechanistic metaphysics to Locke's empirical psychology and Newtonian experimental science. Additional primary documents and manuscripts (many revealed here for the first time) help clarify Rameau's fascinating and stormy relationship with the Encyclopedists: Diderot, Rousseau, and d'Alembert." "This book will be of value to all music theorists concerned with the foundations of harmonic tonality and it should also be of interest to scholars of eighteenth-century science, the Enlightenment, and the general history of ideas."--BOOK JACKET.

Book Music Analysis in the Nineteenth Century Volume 1 Fugue Form and Style

Download or read book Music Analysis in the Nineteenth Century Volume 1 Fugue Form and Style written by Ian Bent and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1994-03-17 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book demonstrates, in fascinating diversity, how musicians in the nineteenth century thought about and described music. The analysis of music took many forms (verbal, diagrammatic, tabular, notational, graphic), was pursued for many different purposes (educational, scholarly, theoretical, promotional) and embodied very different approaches. This, the first volume, is concerned with writing on fugue, form and questions of style in the music of Palestrina, Handel, Bach, Mozart, Beethoven and Wagner and presents analyses of complete works or movements by the most significant theorists and critics of the century. The analyses are newly translated into English and are introduced and thoroughly annotated by Ian Bent, making this a volume of enormous importance to our understanding of the nature of music reception in the nineteenth century.

Book The Theory of Harmony

Download or read book The Theory of Harmony written by Matthew Shirlaw and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-16 with total page 509 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Theory of Harmony: An Inquiry Into the Natural Principles of Harmony, With an Examination of the Chief Systems of Harmony From Rameau to the Present Day The present work might be described as, to some extent, a contribution to the history of the theory of harmony. Notwithstanding the extensive and highly specialized literature which we possess, dealing with the history and the art of music, a literature which of late years has been enormously enriched, comparatively little attention has been given to the history and development of the theory of harmony, which, ever since the time of Rameau, has been considered by musicians themselves to be intimately connected with the art of music. Coussemaker's Histoire de l'harmonie du moyen-âge has to do with the history of the art of music during the Middle Ages, rather than with its theory. The Esquisse de l'histoire de l'harmonie of Fetis is a real history of harmonic theory, and of harmonic systems. But it is, from various points of view, inadequate. It would be quite impossible, for example, to gain from the brochure of Fetis any real acquaintance with Rameau's theoretical achievements, or the nature of his researches in the domain of harmony; while Zarlino is dismissed with the remark that "he is unable to present to us any synoptic science of chords"! With regard to Dr. Riemann's important work, Geschichte der Musiktheorie im IX.-XIX Jahrhundert, it is evident that its author does not consider it to be a history of the theory of harmony, since he makes no attempt even to summarize the systems of such distinguished theorists as Tartini, Hauptmann, and Fetis, as well as of other theorists. Book Music Theory and Natural Order from the Renaissance to the Early Twentieth Century

Download or read book Music Theory and Natural Order from the Renaissance to the Early Twentieth Century written by Suzannah Clark and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Music theory of almost all ages has relied on nature in its attempts to explain music. The understanding of what 'nature' is, however, is subject to cultural and historical differences. In exploring ways in which music theory has represented and employed natural order since the scientific revolution, this volume asks some fundamental questions not only about nature in music theory, but also the nature of music theory. In an array of different approaches, ranging from physical acoustics to theology and Lacanian psychoanalysis, these essays examine how the multifarious conceptions of nature, located variously between scientific reason and divine power, are brought to bear on music theory. They probe the changing representations and functions of nature in the service of music theory and highlight the ever-changing configurations of nature and music, as mediated by the music-theoretical discourse.
