The country round Rugby is rich in historical associations which have greatly influenced English history, for within reach the first and the last of Cromwell's battles were fought. The Wars of the Roses were ended here, and, so far as we know, this was one of the most important Roman centres of England. Book Rugby Classic Reprint

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rugby There is nothing new in this small book except what has happened since 1900. The present compiler most warmly thanks Dr. W. H. D. Rouse and Mr. H. C. Bradby for their freely-granted permis sion to make use of their excellent books on Rugby School (a History of Rugby School, by W. H. D. Rouse, Duckworth and Co., 1898; and Rugby, by H. C. Bradby, George Bell and Sons, Dr. Rouse has fully investigated all available records, and most of the history here contained is a bare summary of his work. In so small a compass it has been frequently necessary to condense, even to the point of obscurity. For this and many other failings the compiler wishes to apologise to any possible reader. He is glad to feel that the booklet has at least interested one reader - him self, who has found plagiarism more entertaining than one would imagine. Any accuracy it may have is due to the revising care of his friend, G. A. F. M. Chatwin, whose Rugbeian lore much exceeds the writer's, and has been most freely lavished on the purging of errors from these pages. Those that remain are solely the writer's fault. Mihi prwteritos referat si Jupiter annos, is exclamation, in which, remembering only the assures of a scrummage at football, a run to Lawford at hare-and-hounds, or a duck hunt at Swift's, every old Rugbwan will, I hope, most heartily concur. And, indeed, when we look back upon our school days, and recall to mind the many agreeable incidents that occurred to us while there, we feel disposed to wish ourselves back again once more, and come to the conclusion that leaving school was the greatest mistake we ever committed. Book Richie McCaw The Open Side

Download or read book Richie McCaw The Open Side written by Greg McGee and published by Hachette UK. This book was released on 2012-10-09 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A player like Richie McCaw comes along once in a lifetime... The Open Side will define that player. Rarely has a New Zealand biography been so eagerly anticipated. Superbly crafted, brilliantly insightful, and set to inspire people for generations to come. From the time his father told him as a child that ‘he would enjoy his rugby more if he got fitter’, Richard Hugh McCaw never looked back. Captain of the All Blacks since 2006, he is the face of rugby in New Zealand and one of our best-known and most admired figures. He has been named International Player of the Year three times and is considered the greatest player of his generation, and quite possibly the finest loose forward of all time. But what do we know of Richie the person and what drives him? In The Open Side, he reveals his passions and motivations, on and off the field. Teamed with Greg McGee, one of our great contemporary writers — and a man who himself is no stranger to rugby culture — the two have produced an outstanding book. The Open Side delves into the inner McCaw, the defining events and people in his life, as well as providing insight into the modern game and its professional players and coaches — including frank comment on the Deans–Henry debate. Richie’s leadership has had a huge impact on the team, and The Open Side traces his rise from fresh-faced Under 19 squad member in 1999 to hardened 100-cap veteran in 2011. As a participant in three Rugby World Cups, Richie describes the agony of defeat in 2007, and the four years of ‘living in a tunnel’ before clawing his way to ‘the light’ of a dramatic victory with the All Blacks in the 2011 final.
