Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ramble's Roman Stories Romulus was, therefore, the sole commander of the city. Soon after hewas elected their king: and thus we see that, in the infancy of society, men were chosen as rulers, who had distinguished themselves in the service and protection of their country. He established a senate of one hundred men, and divided the people into Patricians and Plebeians. At first the city was nearly square, built of mud, and governed the country only for eight miles round; yet this city was one day to give laws to all the world. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ramble's Roman Stories "There is," says a living writer of great ability, "no portion of profane history more pregnant with important instruction, than that which relates to the rise, the growth, the fluctuations, and the fall of Rome. It equally demands the studious attention of the scholar, the statesman, the philosopher, and the Christian." He might have added, that its lessons were equally intelligible and useful to old and young. Convinced of this truth, I have endeavoured in the following pages to place the most remarkable and celebrated events and characters of the Roman history in a striking point of view; and to elicit such moral instruction from the narrative, as might suit the wants and capacities of juvenile readers. For their especial benefit, this volume, as well as the true stories from the several histories of Greece, England, and Spain, which have preceded it, was especially intended. That they may be found useful and acceptable, is the writer's most fervent wish. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories From the History of Rome The writer of this little book was not satisfied that her children should hear nothing but fairy tales and the stories of nursery life, now so popular. But she could find nothing else fit to read to them. There are, indeed, plenty of story-books drawing their materials from history, and professing to be intended for children. But they are not suited to very young children. They abound in words and ideas which a child of four or six years old not only does not understand, but cannot be made to understand. The writer, however, believed that it was quite possible to put portions of Livy and Plutarch into language which should need little or no explanation even to children of that age. She accordingly made the experiment. One story after another was written and read to her little boys. Whenever she discovered that a word or idea was unintelligible to them, she took pains to simplify it. She found that they thoroughly enjoyed these old tales from Roman history, and liked to hear them repeated again and again. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Children's Plutarch: Tales of the Romans Another thing which I could wish the children to observe is how the wisest and best of the an cients were in the bonds of fear to signs and por tents which men laugh at now. This was because their education was, at the best, philosophical, and dealt with conduct through the discussion of moral principles under gods who had none, while the modern education is scientific, and has enlarged the world to boundlessness through vaster knowledge and sympathy with every form of life. The Ro man world, though it was the whole civilized world, was a small world, and it sank at last under the fears and dangers that always encompassed it in the unknown beyond it. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The City of the Seven Hills: A Book of Stories From the History of Ancient Rome In this volume, the attempt has been made to give a picture of the life and history of the Roman peo ple. So far as it has been feasible, this has been done by means of biographical sketches, selected so as to be illustrative of the Roman character, its virtues and its faults. In this way, it has also been possible to weave into the narrative a more vivid description of the daily life and customs of the men, women and children of Rome, than would have been the case under any other method of treatment. In the last chapter, an attempt is made to relate the old Rome to modern life through a description of some existing remains, and to point out in a few words the way in which the ancient city was merged in the Rome of to-day. In a work designed for young children, as is this one, it seems desirable that the brutal element of Roman character and history should be eliminated so far as is possible; and to this end, much has been omitted from the narrative which might properly find a place in a history of Rome for High School use. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Legends of Ancient Rome: From Livy This selection has been compiled for the use of boys who could make out an easy passage of such an author as Caesar, but would be stopped by long or dimcult sentences. It is hoped that the passages will be found, at any rate in the earlier part of the book, to be of progressive difficulty. The attempt to attain this end has led to the omission of some legends of the kings which could not have been made easy enough without much alteration of the text. As this would have left them not Livy's, but something very inferior, it was thought better to omit them altogether. Download or read book Stories of Old Greece and Rome Classic Reprint written by Emilie Kip Baker and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-26 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories of Old Greece and Rome Of the life that was lived among the dwellers on Olympus, not even the poets could claim to know; but sometimes a tired soldier dozing by his camp fire dreamed dreams of this wonderful country where the immortal gods walked by night and day; and sometimes a lonely fisherman, looking across the blue waters of the Mediterranean to the crimsoning sunset, saw visions of youth and beauty and life that lasted for ever and ever and ever. It was long before the memory Of man that the gods first came to live on Mount Olympus, and it was still longer ago that all the great powers of the uni verse fought with each other for the right to rule the world. In this mighty war, which rent the very heavens with the crash of battle, Jupiter at last conquered all his jealous enemies, and made himself ruler of the gods and of the world.1 On that day he established his dwelling place on Mount Olympus, and set the earth below him for a footstool. From his throne in the high heavens he looked down upon the kingdoms that he had portioned out to each of his brothers; and he saw Neptune, the god of the sea, driving through the waves his chariot drawn by huge, misshapen sea-beasts that beat up the thick white foam until it glistened on the sea king's beard and on his crown of shells and seaweed. The other kingdom was so far away that even the all-seeing eyes of Jupiter were strained to catch any glimpse of the shapes that moved noiselessly there, for this was the realm of Pluto, god of the under world, that dread country of darkness and unending gloom, where no ray of sunlight ever came, and where the sad spirits of the dead wept for the lost world of love and light and laughter. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Valerius, Vol. 1 of 2: A Roman Story In the wars of that illustrious commander, during the reigns of Vespasian and Titus, he had the good fortune to find many Opportunities of distinguishing imself but when his general was recalled to the capital by the mean jealousy of Domitian he retired from public life, and de termined to spend the remainder of his days in peace, on the lands which belonged to him (chie y in right of his wife) here in Britain. He laid the foundations of the house in which I have now the pleasure of receiving you; and here, in the cultivation of his fields and in the super intendence of my education, he found abundant employ ment for the energies of a very active, though by no means an ambitious mind. Early in the reign of Trajan, he died, after being confined to his apartment for a few days by an illness which neither my mother nor myself considered as seriously dangerous, till the very evening of its termination. Our grief knew at first no bounds and well might it be so, for never did either Roman or British dwelling lament the departure of a more generous, kind, and affectionate master. My mother, who, in wedding him, had offended the greater part of her own kindred, now that he was gone, had no tie to bind her affections to the earth, excepting myself, her only child, who had scarcely yet entered the threshold of manhood. In my society, therefore, her only hope of human comfort re sided; while I, on my part, loved her with strong and undivided filial love, of which (however that circumstance may be counterbalanced by other advantages) I have never seen any examples among sons educated at a dis tance from the unwearied eye of parental affection.
