Book excerpt: One of India’s greatest epics, the Ramayana pervades the country’s moral and cultural consciousness. For generations it has served as a bedtime story for Indian children, while at the same time engaging the interest of philosophers and theologians. Believed to have been composed by Valmiki sometime between the eighth and sixth centuries BCE, the Ramayana tells the tragic and magical story of Rama, the prince of Ayodhya, an incarnation of Lord Visnu, born to rid the earth of the terrible demon Ravana. An idealized heroic tale ending with the inevitable triumph of good over evil, the Ramayana is also an intensely personal story of family relationships, love and loss, duty and honor, of harem intrigue, petty jealousies, and destructive ambitions. All this played out in a universe populated by larger-than-life humans, gods and celestial beings, wondrous animals and terrifying demons. With her magnificent translation and superb introduction, Arshia Sattar has successfully bridged both time and space to bring this ancient classic to modern English readers.

Book Sita s Ramayana

Download or read book Sita s Ramayana written by Samhita Arni and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ramayana is an epic poem by the Hindu sage Valmiki, written in ancient Sanskrit sometime after 300 BC. It is an allegorical story that contains important Hindu teachings, and it has had great influence on Indian life and culture over the centuries. Children are often encouraged to emulate the virtues of the two main characters -- Rama and Sita. The Ramayana is frequently performed as theater or dance, and two Indian festivals -- Dussehra and Divali -- celebrate events in the story. This version of The Ramayana is told from the perspective of Sita, the queen. After she, her husband Rama and his brother are exiled from their kingdom, Sita is captured by the proud and arrogant king Ravana and imprisoned in a garden across the ocean. Ravana never stops trying to convince Sita to be his wife, but she steadfastly refuses his advances. Eventually Rama comes to her rescue with the help of the monkey Hanuman and his army. But Rama feels he can't trust Sita again. He forces Sita to undergo an ordeal by fire to prove herself to be true and pure. She is shocked and in grief and anger does so. She emerges unscathed and they return home to their kingdom as king and queen. However, suspicion haunts their relationship, and Sita once more finds herself in the forest, but this time she is pregnant. She has twins and continues to live in the forest with them. The story is exciting and dramatic, with many turns of plot. Magic animals, snakes, divine gods, demons, sorcerers and a vast cast of characters all play a part in the fierce battles fought to win Sita back. And in the process the story explores ideas of right vs. wrong, compassion, loyalty, trust, honor and the terrible price of war.

Book India s Epic Ramayana for the youth and kids

Download or read book India s Epic Ramayana for the youth and kids written by Shiv Shankar and published by Notion Press. This book was released on 2017-12-12 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What to write or what not to write now was in my mind after writing a few books. What to write about was the thought after the decision making. The best topic or theme to choose for the present age especially for children and youth is India’s great Epic Ramayana.” There is no panacea or remedy for the country’s ills unless the children and youth of today emulate the lives of great men of the world and life-like characters (once alive in real life according to ancient scripts and “Puranas”) in the Epic of India, “Ramayana” whose protagonists live a life of worthiness following righteousness, honesty, non-acceptance of gifts, control of human anger, greed, anxiety, hurriedness in mad unworthy pursuits, corrupt practices in all our acts, firm resistance to theft, robbery, sex abuse especially child abuse. What are we going to do to fight against corruption and other maladies in society? The children may ask – The answer is children and youth who are the pillars of tomorrow’s world should learn not to accept any gift from others – other than birthday and wedding gifts. This would certainly help us lead a life with self-respect and honor. This immortal story of Ramayana may perhaps help to reduce the evils in society and direct them to the right path of ‘Dharma’ and honest living.

In the final battle many heroes die and new ones are born. In this fast-moving version for children, the ancient tale takes on new life. The traditional ingredients are all there—drama and excitement, gods and princes, love and war, infinite stories within stories, monkeys who cross oceans and carry mountains, shape-changing demons and bizarre monsters—but described with freshness and vitality by Bulbul Sharma. This contemporary retelling, which answers questions and provides explanations, is the perfect first Ramayana for everyone.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Subimal Misra - anarchist, activist, anti-establishment, experimental 'anti-writer' - is a contemporary master, and among India's greatest living authors. This Could Have Become Ramayan Chamar's Tale is a novella about a tea-estate worked turned Naxalite named Ramayan Chamar, who gets arrested during a worker's strike and is beaten up and killed in custody. But every time the author attempts to write that story, reality intrudes in various forms to create a picture of a nation and society that is broken down, and where systemic inequalities are perpetuated by the middle- and upper-classes who are either indifferent or actively malignant. When Colour Is A Warning Sign goes even further in its experimentation, abandoning the barest pretence of narrative and composed entirely as a collage of vignettes, dialogue, reportage, autobiography, etc.Together these two anti-novels are a direct assault on the 'vast conspiracy of not seeing' that makes us look away from the realities of our sociopolitical order. In V. Ramaswamy's translation, they make for difficult, challenging but ultimately immensely powerful reading.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This compact and engaging text provides unique insights into the issues of ‘dharma’ in the Indian epic the Mahābhārata. The word ‘dharma’ is untranslatable and usually mistaken to mean religion. However, as argued here, it is evident through the tales of the epic that the word ‘dharma’ is an umbrella term for all the deeds one does in one’s life. Each chapter of this book is expository, as well as explanatory, providing examples through the tales of the Mahābhārata. The book will be of great interest to research scholars, Indologists and commentators, through its use of tales, narratives, parables, and fables as evidence for understanding the issues of dharma embedded in the Mahābhārata.

This book was released on 2014-11-21 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume aims to look both at as well as beyond the ‘Delhi Gang Rape’ through the lens of Indian Media Studies. The editors consider it a critical event, or rather critical media event that needs to be contextualized within a rapidly changing, diversifying and globalizing Indian society which is as much confronted with new ruptures, asymmetries and inequalities as it may still be shaped by the old-established structures of a patriarchal social order. But the volume also looks beyond the ‘Delhi Gang Rape’ and introduces other related thematic areas of an emerging research field which links Youth, Media and Gender Studies.
