He has been co-editor of many books including the Specialist Reports on Molecular Spectroscopy, published by the Royal Society of Chemistry; he retired as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Raman Spectroscopy in December 1999.

Book excerpt: The concept of this book - an integrated and comprehensive cov erage of all aspects of Raman spectroscopy by a group of specialist- took form nearly three years ago. It made a giant stride toward realiza tion when Dr. L. Woodward, whose outstanding work in this field had long been known to me, agreed to write an introductory chapter and made valuable suggestions concerning others who might be invited to contribute articles. However, many obstacles had to be overcome before this book finally became a reality. It is extremely difficult to prepare a multi author review of the state of knowledge in a rapidly growing field in such a way that all aspects are brought up to the same date. In our case, some workers who had originally agreed to contribute articles were forced to withdraw under the pressure of new commitments, and replacements had to be found. Others were unable to complete their contributions by the deadline date, so that the publication of the book had to be rescheduled. All this tended to work to the detriment of those authors who prepared their chapters as originally scheduled. An effort was made to give the authors most affected by this an opportunity to revise their papers, but of course an arbitrary cutoff date had to be set to avoid an endless spiral of revision and updating.

Being one myself, I have on several occasions tried to find a book where the theory of molecular Raman spectroscopy is treated, and not being able to find one which satisfactorily answered the questions I wanted to see answered, I decided to try to write a book on it myself. Back in the middle fifties I was shown a Raman spectrum for the first time: some faint lines on a photographic plate. In the fall of 1971, during a visit to Moscow, I vividly remembered that spectrum when the son of Mandel'shtam showed me the first spectrum taken in Russia by his father and Landsberg in 1928. The spectrum of quartz photographed during January and February of that year showed the presence of some faint new lines and in later exposures these lines became stronger and stronger.

Experimental data which typifies each technique is presented. This book is comprised of four chapters and opens with an overview of nonlinear optics and coherent Raman spectroscopy, followed by a discussion on nonlinear transfer function of matter. The derivation of third-order nonlinear effects is described and the problem is specialized to one dimension by assuming monochromatic plane waves propagating in the z direction. The next chapter reviews the salient features of seven coherent Raman techniques by calculating the resonant and non-resonant signal contributions in the monochromatic plane wave limit. Finally, the general areas of application of coherent Raman spectroscopy are highlighted.
