Book excerpt: Presents a unified theoretical treatment, which is complete and rigorous but nonetheless readable. The theoretical treatment requires a variety of mathematical and physical tools. To keep the main text uncluttered, these tools are developed in comprehensive Appendices to which cross-references are made in the main text. These Appendices also ensure that the main text is useful to readers with a wide variety of scientific backgrounds and experience. These include not only spectroscopists, but also chemists, physicists, biochemists and analytical chemists. The presentation is such that postgraduate and postdoctoral students as well as more established research workers will find it valuable. About the Author The author was formerly Professor of Structural Chemistry and Director of the Molecular Spectroscopy unit in the University of Bradford. He is distinguished for his original scientific work in a number of areas of Raman spectroscopy. His book, 'Raman Spectroscopy', published in 1978 and long out of print, was highly successful. He has been co-editor of many books including the Specialist Reports on Molecular Spectroscopy, published by the Royal Society of Chemistry; he retired as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Raman Spectroscopy in December 1999.

Download or read book Practical Raman Spectroscopy written by Derek J. Gardiner and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume sets out to draw together the essential expertise which will provide a technical guide to the practice of Raman spectroscopy. The text deals exc1usively with spontaneous Raman spectroscopy and inc1udes some aspects of Resonance Raman spectroscopy. Chapter I sets out the essential theoretical framework using a simple c1assical approach and deals with the rudiments of polarizability. Many of these theoretical points are further developed in Chap. 2 where the scattering and polarization consequences of various sampling geometries and collection optics, on gaseous, liquid, single crystal and thin film methods are detailed. The relative advantages and disadvantages of the wide variety of hardware now available to the Raman spectroscopist are discussed in Chap. 3. Important calibration data is pr. esented in Chap. 4 along with an account of datä analysis techniques, inc1uding signal enhancement methods. Chapter 5 describes some of the techniques and cell designs that have been successfully used to study sampies under extreme conditions and Chap. 6 deals with the rapidly growing technique of Raman microscopy, providing a wide range of application examples and experimental advice. We recognise the difficulty in covering all aspects of Raman spectroscopy in a single volume and a section on further reading, representing what we feel are amongst the more informative references, at the time of publication, is provided for additional detail. Our hope is that Practical Raman Spectroscopy will help to provide a source of on-hand technical support and data for the practising Raman spectroscopist in the laboratory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of this book - an integrated and comprehensive cov erage of all aspects of Raman spectroscopy by a group of specialist- took form nearly three years ago. It made a giant stride toward realiza tion when Dr. L. Woodward, whose outstanding work in this field had long been known to me, agreed to write an introductory chapter and made valuable suggestions concerning others who might be invited to contribute articles. However, many obstacles had to be overcome before this book finally became a reality. It is extremely difficult to prepare a multi author review of the state of knowledge in a rapidly growing field in such a way that all aspects are brought up to the same date. In our case, some workers who had originally agreed to contribute articles were forced to withdraw under the pressure of new commitments, and replacements had to be found. Others were unable to complete their contributions by the deadline date, so that the publication of the book had to be rescheduled. All this tended to work to the detriment of those authors who prepared their chapters as originally scheduled. An effort was made to give the authors most affected by this an opportunity to revise their papers, but of course an arbitrary cutoff date had to be set to avoid an endless spiral of revision and updating.

G. INTRODUCTION This book is written particularly for chemists. Being one myself, I have on several occasions tried to find a book where the theory of molecular Raman spectroscopy is treated, and not being able to find one which satisfactorily answered the questions I wanted to see answered, I decided to try to write a book on it myself. Back in the middle fifties I was shown a Raman spectrum for the first time: some faint lines on a photographic plate. In the fall of 1971, during a visit to Moscow, I vividly remembered that spectrum when the son of Mandel'shtam showed me the first spectrum taken in Russia by his father and Landsberg in 1928. The spectrum of quartz photographed during January and February of that year showed the presence of some faint new lines and in later exposures these lines became stronger and stronger.

Book Coherent Raman Spectroscopy

Download or read book Coherent Raman Spectroscopy written by G. L. Eesley and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coherent Raman Spectroscopy provides a unified and general account of the fundamental aspects of nonlinear Raman spectroscopy, also known as coherent Raman spectroscopy. The theoretical basis from which coherent Raman spectroscopy developed is described, along with its applications, utility, and implementation as well as advantages and disadvantages. Experimental data which typifies each technique is presented. This book is comprised of four chapters and opens with an overview of nonlinear optics and coherent Raman spectroscopy, followed by a discussion on nonlinear transfer function of matter. The derivation of third-order nonlinear effects is described and the problem is specialized to one dimension by assuming monochromatic plane waves propagating in the z direction. The next chapter reviews the salient features of seven coherent Raman techniques by calculating the resonant and non-resonant signal contributions in the monochromatic plane wave limit. Finally, the general areas of application of coherent Raman spectroscopy are highlighted. This monograph is written primarily for uninitiated or endeavoring coherent Raman spectroscopists and should also be of interest to experienced industrial and academic researchers.
