Book excerpt: Chemical speciation of microparticles can be achieved by spectral and intensity analyses of the inelastically scattered radiation (Raman and fluorescence). However, quantitative results by purely optical methods are intimately related to the environment with which the particles are in contact and the morphology of the microstructures. Morphology characterization of regularly shaped microparticles (spheres, cylinders, and spheroids) can be obtained by measuring the peaks in the extinction and elastically scattering spectra. Our investigation on the viability of quantitative species identification of molecules within a microparticle by inelastic laser scattering involved studies of the following: (1) dielectric and metal substrate interface to increase the intensity of the scattered radiation; and (2) morphology dependent dielectric resonances which can modify the scattering spectra.

Book excerpt: Sufficiently adjusted, multivariate data processing methods and procedures can significantly improve the process for obtaining knowledge of a sample composition. Spectroscopic techniques have capabilities for fast analysis of various samples and were developed for research and industrial purposes. It creates a great possibility for advanced molecular analysis of complex samples, such as atmospheric aerosols. Airborne particles affect air quality, human health, ecosystem condition and play an important role in the Earth's climate system. The purpose of this thesis is twofold. On an analytical level, the functional algorithm for evaluation of quantitative composition of atmospheric particles from measurements of individual particles by Raman microspectrocopy (RMS) was established. On a constructive level, the readily accessible analytical system for Raman and FTIR data processing was developed. A potential of a single particle analysis by RMS has been exploited by an application of the designed analytical algorithm based on a combination between a multicurve resolution and a multivariate data treatment for an efficient description of chemical mixing of aerosol particles. The algorithm was applied to the particles collected in a copper mine in Bolivia and provides a new way of a sample description. The new user-friendly software, which includes pre-treatment algorithms and several easy-to access, common multivariate data treatments, is equipped with a graphical interface. The created software was applied to some challenging aspects of a pattern recognition in the scope of Raman and FTIR spectroscopy for coal mine particles, biogenic particles and organic pigments.

In order to elucidate the formation mechanisms and understand the subsequent chemical transformation under a variety of reaction conditions, it is imperative to develop analytical measurement techniques for in situ monitoring of these suspended particles. In this report, we outline our recent work on spontaneous Raman, resonance Raman and non-linear Raman scattering as a novel technique for chemical analysis of aerosol particles as well as supersaturated solution droplets.

Changes in gas phase chemical reaction rates as a function of exposure to a specific aerosol are measured with aerosols having different surface properties due to the composition and/or temperature of the material making up the aerosol. The kinetic data generated can be used directly in atmospheric modeling calculations. The surface structure of the aerosol is using morphology-dependent enhancement of simulated Raman scattering (MDSRS). Detailed dynamics of gas-aerosol interactions can be obtained by correlating the change in the reaction rate with change in surface structure and by monitoring the change in aerosol surface structure during, the course of the reaction. This dynamics information can be used to generate kinetic data for systems which are similar in nature to those studied, but are not amenable to laboratory investigation. We show here that increased MDSRS sensitivity is achieved by using an excitation laser source that has a narrow linewidth and we have been able to detect sulfate anion concentrations much lower than previously reported. We have shown that the linewidth of the MDSRS mode excited in a droplet is limited by the laser linewidth. This is a positive result for it eases our ability to quantify the MDSRS gain equation. This result also suggests that MDSRS signal size should be independent of droplet size, and preliminary experiments confirm this hypothesis.
