Book Ralegh s Last Journey

Download or read book Ralegh s Last Journey written by Paul Hyland and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study in vanity and ambition, madness and resignation. Sir Walter Ralegh (he pronounced it Raw-lie) was the greatest courtier of his day, Elizabeth's favourite, dashing, brilliant, wily and powerful. Many books have been written about him, but none has taken as its subject his extraordinary last months, during the summer of 1618 when, his last voyage a failure and under great suspicion from James I, he was escorted back to London by Sir Lewis Stucley; the tragi-comic story of this journey, from Plymouth to the scaffold, of Ralegh's grotesque behaviour along the way, of the web of deceit and counter-treachery woven between him and his reviled and much misunderstood betrayer Judas Stucley, and of their travelling companion the French physician and double agent Dr Manourie, has not been told. Ralegh's handsome, resourceful and distracted wife; Carew, their 13-year-old son; and Samuel King, privateering captain and link with past glories. On countless occasions Ralegh has the opportunity to escape, and refuses it; then, when he at last opts for freedom (in a false beard), he finds himself betrayed again.

Book The Two Walter Raleighs

Download or read book The Two Walter Raleighs written by Fred B. Tromly and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2018-12-10 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sir Walter Raleigh's biographers have given little attention to his tragic relationship with his son Wat (Walter). They began in proud identification, each seeing himself in the other. But after the father's political downfall and imprisonment for treason, he lost his authority in the family, and the son began to reject paternal advice and his studies and to engage in violent quarrels and duels. Often the father used his influence to rescue his son from his rash acts. Things came to a head after Wat was sued by a young woman for violent assault, and imprisoned. The aged Raleigh had been freed from the Tower to lead an expedition to Guiana, and--as recently discovered documents reveal--he delivered his son from the law by commissioning him as a captain on his flagship, ominously named the Destiny. In a shared tragedy, Wat was killed in a skirmish, and the grieving Raleigh returned to England, broken in spirit and ready for the execution that awaited him.

Book Thomas Harriot and His World

Download or read book Thomas Harriot and His World written by Robert Fox and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second volume of papers on Thomas Harriot edited by Professor Robert Fox is based on the annual Harriot lectures delivered at Oriel College, Oxford between 2000 and 2009. It complements the previous volume, published as Thomas Harriot: An Elizabethan Man of Science in 2000. The focus in several of the papers is on Harriot's outstanding achievements as a mathematician; others consider why he has never received the recognition accorded to his great contemporary, Galileo; others again examine his association with his entrepreneurial patron Walter Ralegh and his contributions to the intensely practical world of exploration and seamanship, as exemplified in his voyage to the coast of present-day North Carolina in 1585. The volume adds significantly to our understanding of a true Renaissance man who wrote accomplished Latin, earned the respect of Europe's leading mathematicians and astronomers, and moved easily in circles close to the English court and whose 'Brief and true report of the new found land of Virginia' (1588) was the first detailed description of America to be published in the English language.

Book Who Killed Sir Walter Ralegh

Download or read book Who Killed Sir Walter Ralegh written by Richard Dale and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2011-07-31 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For 400 years, the true story behind Sir Walter Ralegh's downfall, his conviction for high treason and his eventual beheading has been shrouded in mystery. Was he deliberately set up by the brilliant but untrustworthy Sir Robert Cecil? Why did his friend Lord Cobham denounce him at his trial? And how could this towering figure of the Elizabethan age be accused of conspiring with his old enemy Spain to overthrow the king? In Who Killed Sir Walter Ralegh? Richard Dale draws on his legal background to unravel the extraordinary plots and intrigues that marked the last months of Elizabeth's reign and the first weeks of James' succession. In the bitter struggle for position, wealth and royal favour, only the most ruthless and devious could hope to win, but would the dwarfish, hunchbacked Cecil eventually prevail over the swashbuckling Ralegh? And in the eyes of posterity, who was the real victor?
