Book excerpt: This book discusses the politics of space and identity in the borderlands of northeastern India between the early 1800s and the 1930s. Critiquing contemporary post-colonial histories where this region emerges as fragments, this book sees these perspectives as continuing to be entrapped in a civilizational approach to history writing. Beginning in the pre-colonial period where it focuses on the negotiated character of state-formation during the Mughal imperium, the book then enters the space of the colonial where it looks at some of the early interventions of the East India Company. The analysis of markets as transmitters of authority highlights an important argument that the book makes. Peasantization and the introduction of the notion of the sedentary agriculturist as the productive subject also come up for a detailed discussion, along with economic change and property settlements, which are seen as important ways through which the institution of colonial legality got entrenched in the region. Underlining the interface between the political economy and practices of cultural studies, the book also explores the connections between speech, production of counter narratives of historical memory, political culture and economy, with a focus on the cultural production of a borderland identity that was marked by hyphenated existence between proto- 'Bengal' and proto- 'Assam'.

It not only captures how ‘social exclusion’ is intrinsic to deprivation or deprivation in itself, but also the processes of political engagement and social interactions that the socially excluded develop as strategies and networks for their advancement. Consequently, the book goes beyond structures or agency, and examines the question of a more dynamic approach to provide spaces for the ‘socially excluded’ to self-manage exclusion, thereby raising discussions around the contested positions that underlie development discourse on social inequality. While social exclusion linked to identities is studied, the book argues that hierarchies and inequalities based on social identities cut across and affect various groups of excluded. Consequently, these phenomena create or lead to various processes of exclusion. The book illustrates that social exclusion should not be limited to privileging the differences that characterize the exclusionary processes, but should also comprise underpinning strategies of ‘inclusion’, emphasizing the need to focus on imperatives ‘to include’. Before mentioning about Mahaveer Chilarai, it would be worthy to mention that Maharaj Viswa Singha, who rose from the position of cow-hard king to that of a very powerful monarch of Kamrupa-Kamata and the founder of the Koch Kingdom, was a great and benevolent king. He was known as a great warrior, a superb organizer of people, a just and efficient ruler, extraordinarily courageous, highly religious, tolerant in attitudes, and undoubtedly adventurous with sky rocketing ambitions. His children in general, Naranarayan and Chilarai in particular must have genetically inherited all the great qualities of their father, importantly aggressive personality, organizing and leadership qualities and there of a nation builder. The qualities as part of teaching vis-à-vis learning were-art of warfare, wrestling, study of the sastras, weaponry, horse-riding and fighting from horse-back and particularly attacking the enemy with swords & shields, spears, bows & arrows, fire-arms etc. Once Nara Singha, one of the sons of Viswa Singha, succeeded the throne after the death of Viswa Singha without following norms as set by his father. Naranarayan and Chilarai removed him from the throne and further entered Nepal to fetch Nara Singha who fled to Nepal. In Nepal, the king of Nepal honored both Naranarayan and Chilarai. As “Hanuman Danda” and Druga murti as the sacred deity of Koch kingdom also recovered from Narasimha by Chilarai with delicate approach. Further, the duo brother (Naranarayan and Chilarai) continued to extend their kingdom with massive platoon of soldiers little over 6 lakhs with Bhutiya, Daflas, and Bhuyan joined as one force.
