Book Raising the Roof How to Solve the United Kingdom s Housing Crisis

Download or read book Raising the Roof How to Solve the United Kingdom s Housing Crisis written by Jacob Rees-Mogg and published by London Publishing Partnership. This book was released on 2019-10-10 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Raising the Roof addresses one of the key issues of our era – the UK’s housing crisis. Housing costs in the United Kingdom are among the highest on the planet, with London virtually the most expensive major city in the world for renting or buying a home. At the core of this is one of the most centralised planning systems in the democratic world – a system that plainly doesn’t work. A system that has resulted in too few houses, which are too small, which people do not like and which are in the wrong places, a system that stifles movement and breeds Nimbyism. The IEA’s 2018 Richard Koch Breakthrough Prize, with a first prize of £50,000, sought free-market solutions to this complex and divisive problem. Here, Breakthrough Prize judge Jacob Rees-Mogg and IEA Senior Research Analyst Radomir Tylecote critique a complex system of planning and taxation that has signally failed to provide homes, preserve an attractive environment and enhance our cities. They then draw from the winning entries to the Breakthrough Prize, and previous IEA research, to put forward a series of radical and innovative measures – from releasing vast swathes of government-owned land to relaxing the suffocating grip of the green belt. Together with cutting and devolving tax, and reforms to allow cities to both densify and beautify, this would create many more homes and help restore property-owning democracy in the UK.

Book The Sharing Economy Its Pitfalls and Promises

Download or read book The Sharing Economy Its Pitfalls and Promises written by Michael C. Munger and published by Do Sustainability. This book was released on 2021-08-12 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transactions have always taken place. For hundreds of years that ‘place’ was a market or, more recently, a shopping mall. But in the past two decades these physical locations have increasingly been replaced by their virtual counterparts – online platforms. Here, author Michael C. Munger demonstrates how these platforms act as matchmakers or middlemen, a role traders have adopted since the very first exchanges thousands of years ago. The difference today is that the matchmakers often play no direct part in buying or selling anything – they just help buyers and sellers find each other. Their major contribution has been to reduce the costs of organising and completing purchases, rentals or exchanges. The Sharing Economy: Its Pitfalls and Promises contends that the key role of online platforms is to create reductions in transaction costs and it highlights the importance of three ‘Ts’ - triangulation, transfer and trust – in bringing down those costs.

Book An Introduction to Democracy

Download or read book An Introduction to Democracy written by Eamonn Butler and published by Do Sustainability. This book was released on 2020-03-25 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is democracy? How does it work? What are its strengths – and its shortcomings? Two-thirds of the world’s population, in over 100 countries, live under governments that claim to be democratic. Yet few of those governments live up to the ideals of democracy, or respect its key principles and institutions. Here, author Eamonn Butler defines democracy, explains its purposes, and shows the difference between genuine democracy and the many sham versions that currently exist. He outlines the history of democracy and the benefits it brings. But he also points out the many myths about it that blind us to its limitations. And he explains why it’s important to have a clear understanding of democracy – and how easily it can be lost or abused when people do not properly understand it. Importantly, he asks why so many people today have become disillusioned with democratic politics – and what, if anything, can be done about it. This lucid and fascinating book provides a straightforward introduction to democracy, enabling anyone to understand it – even if they’ve never experienced it.

Download or read book Solving the UK Housing Crisis written by Daniel Rossall Valentine and published by . This book was released on 2017-10-17 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Britain has become a country divided into two nations, people who are on the property ladder and who are benefiting from property price rises, and those who are not on the ladder and fear never being able to get onto the ladder since property prices are rising faster than salaries. This second group face a lifetime living at the parental home or being at the mercy of rolling 12 month tenancies.Building more houses, despite being the solution most widely touted, is not the answer to the UK's housing crisis. In the face of demand from both domestic and overseas investors who see housing as a safe haven for their money, building more houses will have no downward effect on prices. The author proposes a radical package of policy measures that will eliminate the artificial inflation of house prices which has occurred over the last twenty years. These policy measures, if enacted, will reunite the UK, by enabling young British people once again to realistically aspire to own their own homes.Politicians and commentators in the UK have shown a lack of ideas in relation to solving this crisis. Media understanding and analysis of economic and fiscal matters in the UK is very weak, and highly dependent on the press releases of Government and industry bodies. The UK's powerful housing lobby has stepped into this intellectual vacuum by promoting house-building as the solution. However, this report demonstrates that new houses cannot be the primary solution to this immense problem. It is pure fantasy to think that the global demand for British houses can ever be met. Every town and village in the South of England would be ruined by millions of under-sized and under-quality flats and houses before demand was close to being met from the world's 15 million strong financial elite, and house prices would still keep on rising. The solution to the UK's housing crisis lies not in the creation of new housing stock but in changing the usage patterns of existing stock. This report urges that measures are taken to limit the investment demand for houses. It is investment demand (not the commonly mentioned "shortage of new houses") that has corrupted the housing market in many areas and pushed average house prices out of the reach of average citizens. The solution to the housing crisis is similar to the solution to the banking crisis of 2007/8. Just as consumers had been damaged because banks had failed to separate high-street banking from an increasingly aggressive and dominant investment banking operation that was driven by an excess of elite money, so the UK housing market needs separating from a global investment market. Since housing has become an investment market, it should be regulated closely like other investment markets. The process of market separation is neither complex nor expensive and it will once again allow British citizens to own a share of their own nation. This report focuses on the international aspect of this problem, the issue of foreign buyers, since their role in price inflation is both substantial and relatively simple to restrict.

This book was released on 2023-06-27 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the applications of virtual reality technologies in building design and offsite construction. Its focus is on how small and medium-sized architectural and construction practices with limited budgets and time can implement innovation through visualisation creation. Virtual reality technologies, known as empathy machines, offer a productive interaction process for clients and professionals. Gaming and simulation have already proven their efficacy in solving problems in science and business. However, the next challenge is designing data-rich virtual environments that can enhance clients' spatial understanding, simplify architect-client communications, provide customisation options, consolidate quantification, and export data directly to manufacturers' software, minimizing fragmentation across the entire building information management (BIM) lifecycle. With this book, architects and construction professionals can learn how to leverage virtual reality technologies to improve their work processes and enhance client engagement. Whether you're new to virtual reality or an experienced practitioner, this book provides valuable insights and practical tips to help you harness the power of this exciting technology. Book excerpt: In this book, Brian Lund builds on contemporary housing crisis narratives, which tend to focus on the growth of a younger ‘generation rent,’ to include the differential effects of class, age, gender, ethnicity and place, across the United Kingdom. Current differences reflect long-established cleavages in UK society, and help to explain why housing crises persist. Placing the UK crises in their global contexts, Lund provides a critical examination of proposed solutions according to their impacts on different pathways through the housing system. As the first detailed analysis of the multifaceted origins, impact and potential solutions of the housing crisis, this book will be of vital interest to policy practitioners, professionals and academics across a wide range of areas, including housing studies, urban studies, geography, social policy, sociology, planning and politics.

Download or read book The Republicrat written by WLBJ and published by Prudent1 LLC. This book was released on 2023-09-28 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is very simple! The inhabitants of the earth must band together to change course immediately or the world will plunge into the most terrifying, catastrophic, destruction, the likes of which there is no coming back from. There is only one door of opportunity for the world, and if we as a planet do not walk through it immediately, we are all doomed to suffer a terrible fate. Revelation 6 may be upon us, but would God grant us a stay of preparation for the horrors to come? A watchman, civil rights activist, self taught section 1983 and Constitutional scholar for over 25 years, and a self taught biblical scholar for 34 years, in this book, WLBJ reminds us of Ephesians 6:12, that we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, and powers of darkness. With stunning imagery, The Republicrat goes into great detail to explain why these demonic powers not only want, but need the earth to be plunged into nuclear war in order to get the key to the abyss, and why competing world powers must avoid taking the bait and being used to facilitate this. Tackling some of today's most explosive geopolitical topics, such as the latest alleged coup attempt by the Wagner group, the Russian/Ukraine conflict, the Mexican Drug Cartel, the LGBT debate, North Korea, China, and the bitter divide between Republicans and Democrats, WLBJ uses what he coins, "Biblical Geopolitical Analysis," to discuss why we are fighting the wrong enemy, as he attempts to break the spell of witchcraft that plots the whole world against itself. See what it will take to avoid the horrors at the world's doorstep, and why making the right choices could not only avoid the darkest of world catastrophes, but instead, usher in the greatest time of peace and prosperity the world has ever known.

Book Return to Growth Volume One

Download or read book Return to Growth Volume One written by Jon Moynihan and published by Biteback Publishing. This book was released on 2024-09-10 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The UK has, in recent years, been suffering from what is nothing short of an economic crisis. Growth has now completely stalled in those western democracies, the UK included, where high government spending and high taxes have steadily burgeoned, decade after decade. Free-market economies now threaten to leave us behind in terms of wealth, opportunity and standards of living. At the end of Rishi Sunak's 2024 government, expenditure was at 45 per cent of GDP and taxes were 36 per cent and rising – yet still nowhere near sufficient to cover public expenditure. The government's net annual borrowing is now a completely unsustainable 4.4 per cent of GDP, with our overall national debt growing rapidly and alarmingly. In this arresting and powerful manifesto for economic change, Jon Moynihan analyses the UK's decades-long stagnant economy and looks at what can be done to resuscitate it. Combining rigorous research with unparalleled business experience, he explores the key dynamics affecting economic growth, ranging from government borrowing, expenditure, tax and regulation to the way national resources are deployed on non-productive and futile, growth-stifling endeavours. Ultimately, Moynihan shows that unless we act now to reverse the decline, by radically restructuring our economy to stimulate economic growth, the UK risks stagnation, financial collapse and a long-term disintegration in our standard of living. Ignore his warning at your peril.
