Book The Victory Banner Over the Reichstag

Download or read book The Victory Banner Over the Reichstag written by Jeremy Hicks and published by University of Pittsburgh Press. This book was released on 2020-12-15 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In one of the most iconic images from World War II, a Russian soldier raises a red flag atop the ruins of the German Reichstag on April 30, 1945. Known as the Victory Banner, this piece of fabric has come to symbolize Russian triumph, glory, and patriotism. Facsimiles are used in public celebrations all over the country, and an exact replica is the centerpiece in the annual Victory Parade in Moscow’s Red Square. The Victory Banner Over the Reichstag examines how and why this symbol was created, the changing media of its expression, and the contested evolution of its message. From association with Stalinism and communism to its acquisition of Russian nationalist meaning, Jeremy Hicks demonstrates how this symbol was used to construct a collective Russian memory of the war. He traces how the Soviets, and then Vladimir Putin, have used this image and the banner itself to build a remarkably powerful mythology of Russian greatness.

Book War on Autism

Download or read book War on Autism written by Anne McGuire and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2016-04-28 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: War on Autism examines autism as a historically specific and power-laden cultural phenomenon that has much to teach about the social organization of a neoliberal western modernity. Bringing together a variety of interpretive theoretical perspectives including critical disability studies, queer and critical race theory, and cultural studies, the book analyzes the social significance and productive effects of contemporary discourses of autism as these are produced and circulated in the field of autism advocacy. Anne McGuire reveals how in the field of autism advocacy, autism often appears as an abbreviation, its multiple meanings distilled to various "red flag" warnings in awareness campaigns, bulleted biomedical "facts" in information pamphlets, or worrisome statistics in policy reports. She analyzes the relationships between these fragmentary enactments of autism and traces their continuities to reveal an underlying, powerful, and ubiquitous logic of violence that casts autism as a pathological threat that advocacy must work to eliminate. Such logic, McGuire contends, functions to delimit the role of the "good" autism advocate to one who is positioned "against" autism. Book jacket.

Book excerpt: Religious, political, and social movements are not new to society. It seems to be part of our human nature to seek a "better way" of doing things. However, when it comes to the church, do we tread on dangerous ground when we seek a "better way" of doing things by incorporating ideas from other religions and movements into Adventism? "Raising a Red Flag" examines two unrelated movements that simply share the same name-The One Project-and the same concept of transformation. One is a secular project that promotes shared global values and New Age concepts; the other is run by Adventists and promotes focusing solely on Jesus. By studying these two movements, Pastor Jan Voerman hopes to stimulate discussion and cause us to analyze the messages that fight for our attention and call us to change our thinking.

Book Red Flags

Download or read book Red Flags written by Gary S. Aumiller and published by Penguin. This book was released on 1999-09-01 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sure, he's gorgeous, funny, and charming—but early in any doomed relationship there are warning signals foretelling the bad news to come. Studies show that most women will try to justify these signs, excusing them so they don't interfere with their fantasy of having met the perfect man. Unfortunately, such signs are usually all too prophetic—they are the essence of what Gary Aumiller and Daniel Goldfarb call "Red Flags." The question then becomes how to detect and respond to a Red Flag before it's too late. This first-of-its-kind book will help readers determine a man's all-important "loser potential" within the first three dates. Each chapter includes a profile of a different loser, a post-date quiz to help you determine if Mr. Right is Mr. Wrong, and important information about the best way to break up with him. Red Flags has all the fun of a magazine quiz combined with the expertise of psychologists who specialize in the techniques used by the police to profile criminals. They know how to spot the rejects—and now you will, too!
