Download or read book Raising Up a Faithful Exegete written by K. L. Noll and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2010-06-23 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twenty-three colleagues, friends, and former students of Richard Nelson honor him by contributing essays to this volume. Nelson is the fromer Kraft Professor of Biblical Studies at Lutheran Theological Seminary in Gettysburg, PA, and current W. J. A. Power Professor of Biblical Hebrew and Old Testament Interpretation as well as Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at Perkins School of Theology, Southern Methodist University, Dallas. He is the author of numerous books, commentaries, and articles. Raising Up a Faithful Exegete centers around topics of particular interest to Prof. Nelson, especially Deuteronomy, the Former Prophets, priesthoods, social interactions, and theology. In fact, this book could be seen as a one-volume summation of current thinking on Deuteronomy, the Former Prophets, Deuteronomism, and Biblical Theology, disguised as a Festschrift. “For eleven years, I had the distinct pleasure and honor of having Richard Nelson as a senior faculty colleague. He has served as a fine model of what it means to be a dynamic and innovative teacher, an insightful mentor, a world-class scholar, a supportive friend, a dedicated leader in the church, and a person who takes sheer delight in all facets of his calling.”—Richard P. Carlson, Lutheran Theological Seminary, Gettysburg, PA “Rich Nelson is a truly rare breed of man. He is not only a passionate and respected scholar, thoroughly trained and representative of historical-critical approaches to the Hebrew Bible. But he is also open and interested in the whole spectrum of different ways in which the Bible is read and understood both in the church and the academy. He is a remarkable role-model.”—Roy L. Heller, Perkins School of Theology, Southern Methodist University, Dallas “Rich Nelson was one of the best graduate students I ever taught. In a seemingly effortless manner, he did basic, significant research that provided the grounds for a major but to that point generally undeveloped reading of the Deuteronomistic History. Out of that early study and his later scholarly work, he has rightly become one of our leading interpreters of Deuteronomy and the history that evolved out of its circle.”—Patrick D. Miller, Jr., Princeton Theological Seminary

Download or read book We Generation written by Michael Ungar and published by McClelland & Stewart. This book was released on 2011-05-18 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Engaging and timely, this book is an invaluable resource for parents who want their children to become socially responsible and globally aware adults As youth culture seems to grow more self-centred and obsessed with "Me,"Michael Ungar shows us that, in fact, children today are as willing as ever to think "We." Given the right signals, and some important changes to the homes we live in, our schools and communities, kids will seek out close connections with the adults in their lives. Like generations before them, they want to be noticed for the contributions they can make. What they need, though, is compassion and encouragement from parents, and some careful attention to their most important connections, those made at home. Combining inspiring stories taken from his clinical work with families and children with expert research gathered from around the world, Ungar reveals how the close connections kids crave, and the support adults provide, can help kids realize their full potential - and how it can also protect them from the dangers of delinquency, whether it be drug abuse, violence, or early sexual activity. At a time when global issues and activism have come to the forefront, We Generation offers a fresh, optimistic way of thinking about our children’s true nature and potential.

Book excerpt: When I slept upstairs I would wake up and hear noises during the night. Thats when I got really scared of the dark. I was too scared to go downstairs to the bathroom so I wet the bed. I never used to wet the bed. Now I was wetting the bed all the time. What made me start doing that? I dont remember wetting the bed before this. Did Thomas and I get up and go to the bathroom in the middle of the night? Did our mom get us up and take us to the bathroom? All I knew was that I was wetting the bed every night and Thomas was making fun of me for it. I was really scared of the dark now. I dont know why I started being so afraid of the dark. What happened to make me be so afraid? This is a raw and powerful story of a woman who has suffered from multiple kinds of abuse and how it has affected every aspect of her life. She has gone through incest, childhood sexual abuse, and mental and verbal abuse. She begins by introducing you to her family and her story starts from there. She goes through her childhood, adult life, and up to the present. She is candid in the way she writes the story of her life. She tells you when and how the sexual abuse happened, how she felt about it at the time, and how it is still affecting her today. She was fifty five when she faced the abuse and started healing from the devastating effects it had on her life. She felt a need to tell her story and it took a lot of courage for her to disclose her life in such an open and honest way. Her story will give you hope and inspiration that you can heal at any age of your life.

Joshuas world is inhabited by fictional characters of fairytale and make believe muses who come to life within Joshuas fantasy dream world, as it is this setting where we are led into Joshuas world of animated and colorful characters open to his bemusement, as Joshua also has a unique and mysteriously transcending connection that is tied to the trees that often whisper his name within this world, taking his mind into a place of fantasy. During his childhood, Joshua has an accident, which changes the course of his life and takes away his ability to communicate without stuttering and so adds to his disappointment and disadvantages in his life. As the events of Joshuas tragic life unfold, we are also led back and forth into his world of fantasy. Joshua also experiences racial prejudice and discrimination from his peers when he fails to enlist into the army and is made to work as a kitchen porter, although in his waking dreams where he relies upon the narrative of the stories that were once etched into his imagination, he is still very much frowned upon and looked down and treated unfairly. As a kitchen porter in the army, Joshua also becomes the concern and a friend to his fellow comrades and potential soldiers in the making, although they seem to pity his disposition. As his relationships begin to blossom amongst the elements of racial tension, it is under this climate that things begin to develop as Joshua is taken under the wing of a young Christian girl who attempts to teach him to read and write. But just when things appear to be progressing, once again, the racial tension boils over until there is a bitter feud involving this simple and nave Joshua, which results in him trying to help his friend escape, and by doing so, he is made to be the victim of a tragic event.

Download or read book The Skeletons in God s Closet written by Joshua Ryan Butler and published by HarperChristian + ORM. This book was released on 2014-10-21 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can a loving God send people to hell? Isn’t it arrogant to believe Jesus is the only way to God? What is up with holy war in the Old Testament? Many of us fear God has some skeletons in the closet. Hell, judgment, and holy war are hot topics for the Christian faith that have a way of igniting fierce debate far and wide. These hard questions leave many wondering whether God is really good and can truly be trusted. The Skeletons in God's Closet confronts our popular caricatures of these difficult topics with the beauty and power of the real thing. Josh Butler reveals that these subjects are consistent with, rather than contradictory to, the goodness of God. He explores Scripture to reveal the plotlines that make sense of these tough topics in light of God’s goodness. From fresh angles, Josh deals powerfully with such difficult passages as: The Lake of Fire Lazarus and the Rich Man The Slaughter of Canaanites in the Old Testament Ultimately, The Skeletons in God's Close uses our toughest questions to provoke paradigm shifts in how we understand our faith as a whole. It pulls the “skeletons out of God’s closet” to reveal they were never really skeletons at all.
Download or read book One Step Closer written by CJ Plogger and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2016-12-31 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A journey is a collaboration and culmination of many steps. Sometimes our steps move us forward or backwards. Sometimes we take steps to the left or to the right. Our goal should be that our steps move us toward a definite destination. We hope that our steps are taking us nearer to that which will make us stronger, better, or even be greater people. As our steps are crucial, our end point is as well. If we want to have the life that God has in store for us, we need to be walking toward Him daily. God has a life of peace and joy for us. Not problem free, but one of peace. Not without tribulations or trouble, but one of triumph. In order for us to possess this life, God has to be our end destination. He has to be the one that we are focusing and He has to be the one that we are depending upon. In order for us to grow in the Lord and step closer to Him, we must be intentional. It would be wonderful if we could just wake up and be spiritually stronger than we have ever been before. But that is not reality. We must be systematic and strategic if we are going to grow in the Lord. This book will help and lead you to grow spiritually. Jesus said, "If we are to follow Him, we are to take up our cross daily." One Step Closer is a tool that will not only strengthen us now it will impact our eternity.
