What, and who, holds together its large corporate interests, small-government libertarians, social and racial traditionalists, and evangelical Christians? Raised Right pursues these questions through a cultural study of three iconic conservative figures: National Review editor William F. Buckley, Jr., President Ronald Reagan, and Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas. Examining their papers, writings, and rhetoric, Jeffrey R. Dudas identifies what he terms a "paternal rights discourse"—the arguments about fatherhood and rights that permeate their personal lives and political visions. For each, paternal discipline was crucial to producing autonomous citizens worthy and capable of self-governance. This paternalist logic is the cohesive agent for an entire conservative movement, uniting its celebration of "founding fathers," past and present, constitutional and biological. Yet this discourse produces a paradox: When do authoritative fathers transfer their rights to these well-raised citizens? This duality propels conservative politics forward with unruly results. The mythology of these American fathers gives conservatives something, and someone, to believe in—and therein lies its timeless appeal.

Among the most startling, however, must be his assertion that the Law, the Prophets, and the Psalms contain things written about him. Ask any Christian to point to Old Testament verses that contain things written about Jesus and you’ll see just how startling a claim this is. The first Christians, however, faced no such problem. As the book of Acts demonstrates, the early church preached Jesus from the Old Testament. In fact, in 1 Corinthians 15 Paul tells us that Jesus not only died according to the Scriptures but that he was raised according to the Scriptures. Paul asserts here that the Old Testament foretells Jesus’s resurrection. Contemporary scholars will warn us to be wary about reading Jesus back into the Old Testament. They’ll suggest that resurrection and the afterlife is an alien concept in the Old Testament. Paul, however, clearly invites us to search the Scriptures for precursors, promises, and prophecies about the resurrection. So, let’s follow the lead of Paul and find Easter in the Old Testament.

Focusing on Virginia and the Carolinas from 1750 to 1835, Katy Simpson Smith's study examines these maternal practices to reveal the ways in which diverse groups of women struggled to create empowered identities in the early South. We Have Raised All of You contributes to a wide variety of historical conversations by affirming the necessity of multicultural -- not simply biracial -- studies of the American South. Its equally weighted analysis of white, black, and Native American women sets it distinctly apart from other work. Smith shows that while women from different backgrounds shared similar experiences within the trajectory of motherhood, no universal model holds up under scrutiny. Most importantly, this book suggests that parenthood provided women with some power within their often-circumscribed lives. Alternately restricted, oppressed, belittled, and enslaved, women sought to embrace an identity that would give them some sense of self-respect and self-worth.
