Book Raindrops from the Laundromat

Download or read book Raindrops from the Laundromat written by Dominique Camm and published by Dominique Camm. This book was released on with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An unexpected trip to the laundromat, a night of passion he cannot forget, and undying loyalty set the stage for the awakening, destruction, and rebirth of Levon Jones. In this modern coming of age journey, Levon returns to his small southern hometown and desperately tries to avoid the entanglement and specter of sirens. A former standout athlete in the sleepy suburbs of Bacon’s Castle, he is jolted out of his cynical existence onto a rollercoaster ride. If he can survive unpredictable intrusions from his partners-in-crime, insane rolls of the dice, and the trial of his life, there is the potential of redemption. His sifting between conflicting loyalties, long-standing secrets, and unforeseeable twists adds spice to his journey. As Levon narrates his consciousness and exposes his uphill battles, the fates conspire against him. This fictional suspense was inspired by real events and encompasses contemporary realities and tragedy that are often overlooked. This modern social critique of America feels all too familiar to some and may be a wake-up call to others.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A book of hilarious and ingenious comic drawings from the popular 30 Rock star and "World Champion" comedian Judah Friedlander, hailed by Tina Fey as "one of the all-time great weirdos." Most Americans know Judah Friedlander from his role as Frank Rossitano on 30 Rock and from appearances in films like American Splendor and The Wrestler. But long before he became a film and TV star and stand-up comic Friedlander drew stuff. Now, in this quirky, hilarious, and surprisingly profound collection of drawings, Friedlander shows a new side to his "terrifically entertaining" (New York Times) comedy. Whether imagining George Washington in Las Vegas, plastic surgery for imperfect triangles, and the Keystone Pipeline as a sex act, Friedlander's "Joodles" push boundaries as they explore the absurdities of American life, sex, and even history and human rights. If the Raindrops United is a milestone in the career of one of America's most inventive comedians. Praise for If the Raindrops United: "Judah has drawn a weird and funny book in the grand '70s tradition of B. Kliban! I think this book will probably fix the world." -- Tina Fey "Some people meditate. Some people masturbate. But if you don't have the time or patience for either of those, I recommend reading If the Raindrops United to calm down, have a little laugh, or a big think." -- Susan Sarandon "I've known Judah for many years and I still don't understand how his mind works, but it sure works. Seriously strange. Seriously funny. A National Treasure. Sadly, I need to get a restraining order against him." -- Paul Giamatti "Judah thank you for writing a funny twisted book. It is such an easy read. Even dum dums like me can enjoy it!!! Buy this book." -- Dave Attell "Judah's drawings are deceptively simple, yet they become more compelling with every page. His talent as an actor/writer/comedian is further conveyed in ANOTHER medium. He's a Quadruple Threat. He wears many hats. Literally." -- Janeane Garofalo "Reading Judah Friedlander's new book is a lot like hanging out with Judah himself: occasionally baffling, frequently thought-provoking, but, most of all, consistently hilarious!" --Mick Foley "To compare Judah Friedlander to a great cartoonist like Jim Davis would be a compliment to Jim Davis." -- Wyatt Cenac "Another hit from The World Champ tackling the signs and symbols you frequently question while dropping hot lava in your American Standard VorMax." -- Eddie Huang

Download or read book Counting Raindrops written by Robert Thornton and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2020-11-25 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There shall be showers of blessings. (Ezekiel 34:26)The goodness, kindness, and blessings of God did not "start" when we repented of our sins and came to Christ-because it was the goodness and mercy of God that "led us" to repentance.Romans 2:4 says that we did not know that it was the goodness and forbearance of God that leads us to repentance. This is due to the fact that before our conversion, our "spiritual birth," or our born-again experience, we were blind to spiritual things-even the benevolent intervention of God in our lives.Remember, Jesus said in St. John 3:3,Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.Before we received Christ and became born again, we were spiritually blind. Saint John 1:12-13 says,But as many as received him, to them gave the power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.Therefore, after we are born again and are alive unto God, we are able to see and recognize all the goodness and mercy of God in our lives. When we look back over our lives with our new "spiritual perception," we see the goodness and forbearance of God that tenderly guided us to our salvation.Often the Holy Spirit will take us on a retrospective journey into our past and illuminate various times and situations that as born-again children, we are now able to see and identify as the gracious hand of our Heavenly Father at work in our lives. He was working in our lives long before we ever came to truly know Him or appreciate the goodness and mercy that was granted to us.However, when we do take the time and look back through the years with the eyes of our understanding being opened by our new birth in Christ, we begin to realize the blessings are more than we are able to count. It's like trying to count raindrops during a springtime shower. Of course, we know that it would be impossible to count each one. But whenever we recognize any of the providential blessings of God, and testify of his goodness and his mighty acts, we are giving praise to his name. Since there are so many of them and they never cease, then our praises of God would be continuous. This is why the palmist said,I will bless the Lord at all times: his praise shall continually be in my mouth. (Psalm 34:1)Also,I will shew forth all thy marvelous works. (Psalm 9:1)AndO magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt his name together. (Psalm 34:3)The greatest form of praise is to describe what our God is able to do, has done, and is still doing-even in our times. He is able to do "exceeding, abundantly above all that we ask of think, according to the power that worketh in us" (Ephesians 3:20).It is my prayer that every believer will be more inspired to look through the clear prism of spiritual discernment and review their lives-before and after coming to Christ-and show forth all his marvelous works.

Book excerpt: "[W]onderful, enlightened, and convincing beyond any reasonable expectations of what a science fiction novel should be." —Greg Bear Compugen has become a giant player in the tech field overnight by making genetically altered viruses into "biochips" that are replacing silicon chips as the brains of computers. Toby Bridgeman and Adrian Storey are an odd-couple of scientists—Toby, the programmer, and Adrian, the sloppy genius and genetic artist, have formed an enduring friendship and produced Epicell, a biochip so powerful that it will make all others on the market obsolete and save Compugen from financial disaster—if it can be rushed out fast enough. But Epicell, elemental living virus, is so awesome in its capabilities that tests have not yet established any limits to its multiplication or its computing sophistication. Adrian wants more testing—he believes that Epicell is potentially dangerous. Instead, it is rushed to market to save the failing company. Then those in contact with Epicell begin to come down with bad colds—the virus has spread outside computers, living and growing in the human body. Adrian, and perhaps the human race, are doomed unless Toby can reprogram the Epicell inside Adrian—and inside himself.

Book Why Are You So Quiet

Download or read book Why Are You So Quiet written by Jaclyn Desforges and published by Annick Press. This book was released on 2020-09-08 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Into a world where it often seems nobody is listening comes a poignant story that celebrates the power of silence. “Why are you so quiet?” Her teacher implores it, her classmates shout it, even her mom wonders it. Everyone, it seems, is concerned for Myra Louise. So, in search of an answer to the tiresome question nobody will stop asking, she invents a listening machine. If the raindrops, or the crickets, or the dryers at the laundromat can tell her why they’re so quiet, maybe Myra Louise can finally make everybody understand. But the more she listens, the less interested she becomes in finding any answer at all. Because Myra Louise comes to realize that all she really needs is someone else to listen alongside her. With gorgeous illustrations from Risa Hugo, Jaclyn Desforges’s first picture book champions introversion and the value of being a listener, a thinker, and an observer in our increasingly loud world.

His novel traces the fate of Paul, a boy whose mother has died and who runs away from a violent father. The book follows Paul from living on the streets of Chicago to passing through juvinile institutions and a state system that is primarily programmed for failure. There, he meets Tanya and they fall in love but they are young and are separated after a failed attempt to escape the institution. Paul battles through the violent system all the while battling his own rapidly budding adolescence. But as he turns sixteen he starts to come to terms with his own path, not as an adult, but as a scared child. Paul's emotions that we think of as anger are actually the determination to take control of his future. As he starts to overcome the system that has housed him, we see him developing a voice and a future of his own, but one day Tanya reappears in his life and the real decisions have to be made. While the characters are fictional, the do not have to be they are representative of many and we realize the fragility of childhood and the burden on the children who have nowhere else to go.

Download or read book The Foundations of Rock written by Walter Everett and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2008-12-09 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive introduction to the inner workings of rock music, The Foundations of Rock goes back to the heart of the music itself from the time of its birth through the end of classic rock. Walter Everett expertly takes readers through all aspects of the music and its lyrics, leading fans and listeners to new insights and new ways to develop their own interpretations of the aural landscapes of their lives. Written with style, Everett does not depend on musical notation nor professional jargon, but rather combines text with nearly 300 newly written audio examples (performed on the companion website) and more than 100 expertly chosen photographs, to offer a rich text-and-web experience that brings new meanings to songs that have dominated music for a half-century. Through careful illustration, frequently citing the most familiar and pertinent examples from throughout the 1955-1970 period, The Foundations of Rock covers the nature and use of all musical instruments and vocal qualities; reveals the many different ways that phrases and sections of songs can be combined; discusses the materials and patterns in melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic invention; explains the many important ways that producers and engineers add to the artistry; and finally suggests paths for combining an understanding of all of these elements with interpretations of a song's lyrics. This is all done in thorough detail, and always with an ear towards the possible meanings such techniques convey in a music that has had a profound impact upon our world. In doing so, Everett helps readers create new depths of understanding and appreciation. Hundreds of memorable hit songs are referred to in order to illustrate every individual point, while twenty-five diverse classics of the period have been chosen for very close hearing from multiple perspectives. The reader will come away with a much deeper appreciation of the music of the Beatles and the Stones, the Supremes and the Temptations, the Dead and Janis, Elvis and Buddy Holly, the Beach Boys and the Rascals.

Book excerpt: Blood Collected Stories Winner of the 2016 Indie Book Awards (Short Stories) Noelle Q. de Jesus’ collection of short stories is a striking debut of cultural exchanges and foreign tongues: stories that trace and sustain the conflict between man and woman, parent and child, country and identity, self and sexuality, love and loss. "... De Jesus' characters inhabit a world of regret, loss and unfulfilled longing. In these works, there is as much said in the silences and ellipses, as there are in the fraught, perfunctory exchanges. ... De Jesus' economy of words and her voice, bleak and spare, yet intimate, recalls the virtuosity of short story fiction masters, such as Lorrie Moore and Edith Pearlman." -The Straits Times “At the start of each compact narrative in this collection, Noelle Q. de Jesus places a cunning tiger of thrilling tension ready to spring. Thematically cogent, these stories are about the lives of the displaced" -Michael Carroll, Author of Little Reef and Other Stories, Lambda Literary Award Winner 2015 “Carefully crafted and richly observed, these stories are filled with unforgettable women" -F.H. Batacan, Author of Smaller and Smaller Circles
