Book excerpt: Small particles that are scavenged by cloud droplets by a process of coagulation are then placed in a position to be more efficiently removed by the rain. Fractions of a given particle size removed as a result of both these mechanisms operating are presented as a function of rainfall rate and time, and application is made to an assumed size distribution of radioactive solid particles.

Book Rain Scavenging of Particulate Matter from the Atmosphere

Download or read book Rain Scavenging of Particulate Matter from the Atmosphere written by A. Nelson Dingle and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The design and construction of an Aerodynamic Raindrop Sorter is reported. Calibration and testing of this device remains to be done. An effort was made, by the use of expedient measures, to obtain samples of rain more or less discriminated according to drop size. Experimentation with such measures was conducted, and the nylon-net technique proved most practical although it was only partially successful. Some results of this effort are presented. Raindrop-size distributions are presented and related to rain gauge records. Coordination of research plans with other research groups and efforts has progressed and the results are discussed.

Book First Principles of Meteorology and Air Pollution

Download or read book First Principles of Meteorology and Air Pollution written by Mihalis Lazaridis and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-11-18 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book’s main objective is to decipher for the reader the main processes in the atmosphere and the quantification of air pollution effects on humans and the environment, through first principles of meteorology and modelling/measurement approaches. The understanding of the complex sequence of events, starting from the emission of air pollutants into the atmosphere to the human health effects as the final event, is necessary for the prognosis of potential risk to humans from specific chemical compounds and mixtures of them. It fills a gap in the literature by providing a solid grounding in the first principles of meteorology and air pollution, making it particularly useful for undergraduate students. Its broad scope makes it a valuable text in many related disciplines, containing a comprehensive and integrated methodology to study the first principles of air pollution, meteorology, indoor air pollution, and human exposure. Problem-solving exercises help to reinforce concepts.

  • Pages : 448 pages

Download or read book Air Pollution Modeling written by P. Zannetti and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Finishing this book is giving me a mixture of relief, satisfaction and frus tration. Relief, for the completion of a project that has taken too many of my evenings and weekends and that, in the last several months, has become almost an obsession. Satisfaction, for the optimistic feeling that this book, in spite of its many shortcomings and imbalances, will be of some help to the air pollution scientific community. Frustration, for the impossibility of incorporating newly available material that would require another major review of several key chap ters - an effort that is currently beyond my energies but not beyond my desires. The first canovaccio of this book came out in 1980 when I was invited by Computational Mechanics in the United Kingdom to give my first Air Pollution Modeling course. The course material, in the form of transparencies, expanded, year after year, thus providing a growing working basis. In 1985, the ECC Joint Research Center in Ispra, Italy, asked me to prepare a critical survey of mathe matical models of atmospheric pollution, transport and deposition. This support gave me the opportunity to prepare a sort of "first draft" of the book, which I expanded in the following years.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Urban Climates is the first full synthesis of modern scientific and applied research on urban climates. The book begins with an outline of what constitutes an urban ecosystem. It develops a comprehensive terminology for the subject using scale and surface classification as key constructs. It explains the physical principles governing the creation of distinct urban climates, such as airflow around buildings, the heat island, precipitation modification and air pollution, and it then illustrates how this knowledge can be applied to moderate the undesirable consequences of urban development and help create more sustainable and resilient cities. With urban climate science now a fully-fledged field, this timely book fulfills the need to bring together the disparate parts of climate research on cities into a coherent framework. It is an ideal resource for students and researchers in fields such as climatology, urban hydrology, air quality, environmental engineering and urban design.
