Book Recording Spaces

Download or read book Recording Spaces written by Philip Newell and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 1998-01-15 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recording Spaces deals with the acoustics of rooms intended for musical performance of many styles. It discusses these spaces in terms of isolation, internal acoustics, possible techniques of use, and the way that these spaces will interact with the musicians, their instruments, and the microphones. It deals with the concepts of sound isolation, examines some of the principal processes at work, and provides drawings and descriptions of actual rooms and techniques. The book describes how the isolation requirements have their effect on the internal acoustics of the rooms, and how the room treatments must be conceived with such interactions taken into consideration. Starting from the initial concepts, to the measurements of the finished items, Recording Spaces discusses many different types of room, from vocal `booths' to orchestral rooms. There are many stories of how actual `classical' musical performances, from rock to orchestral, have been inspired, or strongly influenced, by the acoustics of their recording spaces. Philip Newell lives in Spain and travels extensively - he is currently designing a concert hall in the Ukraine. Philip began his career working with classic groups such as The Who, whilst at the same time recording brass bands, Welsh male voice choirs, Scottish pipes, church and fairground organs, musicals, and classical recitals. After setting up Virgin Records' first studio he designed their Manor Mobile studio, produced the first recording with a 24-track mobile vehicle, and went on to design their Townhouse Studios in London. Philip has close links with the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research at Southampton University and has written articles for the major audio magazines. He is the author of Studio Monitoring Design, also published by Focal Press.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studios are, at once, material environments and symbolic forms, sites of artistic creation and physical labor, and nodes in networks of resource circulation. They are architectural places that generate virtual spaces—worlds built to build worlds. Yet, despite being icons of corporate identity, studios have faded into the background of critical discourse and into the margins of film and media history. In response, In the Studio demonstrates that when we foreground these worlds, we gain new insights into moving-image culture and the dynamics that quietly mark the worlds on our screens. Spanning the twentieth century and moving globally, this unique collection tells new stories about studio icons—Pinewood, Cinecittà, Churubusco, and CBS—as well as about the experimental workplaces of filmmakers and artists from Aleksandr Medvedkin to Charles and Ray Eames and Hollis Frampton.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Photography, one of the most influential inventions of the nineteenth century, has been shaped by Canadian innovators. Among them are two Quebec men who have flown beneath the radar in studies of the history of photography: the Smeaton brothers. Out of the Studio documents the life, oeuvre, and achievement of Charles Smeaton and his younger brother, John. Launched by the opening of their “photographic gallery” in 1861, they developed a reputation in Quebec for images of contemporaneous people, places, and events taken in challenging outdoor settings. Smeaton pictures of the aftermath of the Great Fire of Quebec in 1866 helped bring an understanding of the disaster to an international audience; images featuring the gold mining industry were displayed at the Exposition universelle in Paris the following year. When Charles travelled to Europe in 1866, he accomplished a feat previously thought impossible, taking the first successful photographs in the Roman catacombs. John moved to Montreal in 1869, where he worked for newspapers and developed techniques for the direct transfer of photographs into print without the necessity of intermediary engravings. Out of the Studio is the first comprehensive biographical study detailing the innovation and imagination of the Smeaton brothers and their legacy of images across two continents.

It starts with fatalities on early mining tramways before the dawn of the steam age and takes the story up to the present day. While many of Britain’s worst tragedies are covered in depth, such as Quintinshill in 1915 and Harrow & Wealdstone in 1952, the book also looks at others that had resounding consequences for safety.

Book Watford and South West Herts in the Great War

Download or read book Watford and South West Herts in the Great War written by Eugenia Russell and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2015-08-31 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book highlights the importance of Watford as a regional centre within South West Herts during the years of the Great War as well as the cohesion of the local area and the impact events and initiatives had on the entire region. The organization and presence of the Army are discussed before focusing on different aspects of civilian life such as the contribution of civilians to the war effort, the Police and Fire Service, the role of Churches, Schools and the Press and changes in employment and local businesses. As the War wore on and the magnitude of the sacrifice sunk in, hospitals and charities became more prominent. The latter part of the book presents these as well as the many public and private ways of commemorating the War Dead in the aftermath of the conflict. The distinctiveness of such Memorials reflects the legacy of the Arts and Crafts Movement and the artistic communities resident in Bushey and Watford.
