Grasemann, to whom I tender my warmest acknowledgments. A portion of Chapter III was written, at my request, by Mr. Edward Davy Pain, and a portion of Chapter IV bv Mr. C. J. Bowen Cooke, to both of whom my Sincere thanks are offered for giving me the benefit of their literary Skill as well as of their expert knowledge. In writing each one of the other chapters I have had the assistance of one or more friends closely in touch with the department of railway working under treatment. My gratitude to these for help, in every case most kindly and willingly given, is none the less Sincere because I do not mention them by name. Book Railways and Other Ways Being Reminiscences of Canal and Railway Life During a Period of Sixty Five Years Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2018-09-13 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Railways and Other Ways: Being Reminiscences of Canal and Railway Life During a Period of Sixty-Five Years The last six or seven decades have been fraught with wonderful inventions and discoveries, coming so thick and fast upon each other that the human mind is almost bewildered when it meditates upon them. It is safe to say, however, that nothing has done so much to bring nations together, and to advance the interests of their inhabitants, as those of the Locomotive and the Steamship. The author has watched the rise of these mighty pioneers of civilization from their infancy to their present gigantic growth; and, from his long experience of the carrying industries in both England and Canada, has ventured to make some remarks connected with the management of them, more particularly as regards the movements of freight and freight rates, questions which are frequently being discussed by Governments and the public in all countries. The author's long and intimate connection with the two. Canadian railways, the Grand Trunk and Great Western (now forming one system), since their opening forty years ago, must be stated as a reason for his giving more than ordinary prominence to the sketches and memoirs of the men who have had the manage ment of these railways, and of those who are still the active workers on that of the Grand Trunk, who in most cases have grown from youth to mature age in its service. It makes it the more desirable, perhaps, that the reminiscences of the early Grand Trunk Railway should be recorded, from the fact that many of the documents con useted with its early history were destroyed by the burning of the general offices at Point St. Charles, Montreal, many years ago. The subjoined synopsis of the book, Railways and Other Ways, will give a fair idea of the character of the work. Download or read book The Working and Management of an English Railway Classic Reprint written by George Findlay and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-18 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Working and Management of an English Railway In June, 1890, the Author was invited to read a paper at the Royal United Service Institution upon the Transport of Troops by Rail within the United King dom, and as a contribution, however humble, towards the elucidation of what might in certain contingencies become a question of great importance in connection with the defence of the country, he has thought it not out of place to embody the result of his consideration of the subject in chapter xvii. Of this work. At an earlier period of the same year, the writer delivered a lecture at the Society of Arts, upon the subject of Modern Improvements of Facilities in Rail way Travelling, and in the hope that this may prove to be to the general reader a not altogether uninteresting résumé of railway progress in this country during the last half century, the lecture, with certain emendations has been printed as an appendix to the present edition. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Government Ownership of Railways In an earlier book entitled The American Transporta tion Question, the author has discussed the railway prob lem of the United States as it presents itself if it be assumed that the policy of private ownership of railways is to be maintained. The present work has two purposes. One is to give information as to the comparative results of private and public ownership and management of rail ways in various leading and typical countries. Its other, and main, purpose is to try to direct serious consideration to the question of what in view of the experience of other countries with state ownership and management, and of the conditions existing in the United States would probably be the results of the adoption of government own ership and management of railways in this country. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Railways By way of introduction to What may follow, those of the British public who feel any interest at all in the subject in question should recall, in the first place, the particular circumstances in which the railway system of each country was originally brought into being, inas much as these circumstances have a material bearing on the general position to-day. In Great Britain the era of railways followed the era of highways. The towns were settled, carriers' carts went on their regular rounds along well-made roads. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Permanent Way of Railways The results of Mr. Riley's analysis confirm the statement made by Mr. Smith, in his Paper on Bessemer Steel Rails, viz., that greater hardness of the material did not conduce to the longevity of steel rails. 1 Thus, in rail No. 17, which shows a large extent of wear, the amount of carbon (0 331) is in excess of that in rail No. 18 (0° while the wear of No. 18, viz., 0° 30 inch, is less, as has already been shown. In both these rails the silicium appears to be exactly the same. The percentage, however, of sulphur, phosphorus, and manganese is considerably higher in the most worn rail. Rail No. 22, situated on the up line at the north end of the Copenhagen tunnel, has, however, by far the largest proportion of carbon, viz., 0° 538 per cent. In this instance the wear has been inch under a trafiic of tons (live and dead weight), equivalent to tons per 116. Inch. Immediately adjoining, and subject to nearly the same traffic, is rail No. 24, which, although it has the smallest amount of carbon, viz., 0 270 per cent., Shows, at the same time, the least wear, equi valent to tons per 115 inch. Again, in rail No. 23, which adjoins rail No. 24, the proportion of carbon, per cent., is considerably greater, while the wear is almost exactly double that in the last-mentioned rail. In this rail N o. 23) there is a large proportion of phosphorus, manganese, and silicium, and the excess of the latter may possibly account for the increased wear. The sections showing the extent of wear of the steel rails on other portions of the main line, together with particulars of the tonnage and the results of Mr. Riley' s analysis, are given in Plate 18, and Tables 7 and 8, Appendix. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Light Railways at Home and Abroad Light railways postulate greater facilities for promotion, cheaper construction, simpler working, and more lenient conditions generally than are applied to ordinary or standard railways; but, as pointed out in Chapter I., light and standard railways only differ from each other in degree, and no sharp line can be drawn between them. We are all feeling our way in the matter Of light railways, and the treat ment of a subject which is more or less unformed and undefined presents peculiar difficulties. The late Mr Corrie L. Thompson's Catalogue of Books, Reports, Papers, and Articles relating to Light Railways, 1895, was a most useful guide to a literature which is necessarily scattered and incomplete. To sift this information, and to collect and arrange useful matter in a convenient and readable form was the result I aimed at. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Two-Cent Railroad Fare: And Other Railroad Legislation in Ohio Even a State can become so absorbed in the business of a com mon carrier, and interested in the profits, and desirous of keeping the property in repair, that it does not welcome the irritating competition of private capital and individual energy. Such competition is not regarded so healthful when the State loses as when the loss falls on individuals comprising private corpora tions. It is the New York Central and Hudson River. Railroad, the only four-track railway on the continent - the only railway which has its eastern terminus in the metropolis of the western hemi sphere - which runs through the most populous cities, towns and neighborhoods of the Empire State; which receives from the West the immense streams of travel from four great trunk lines of railway; in short, with superior advantages of connections and unexcelled local conditions of profitable passenger traffic, this is the railway that is offered in comparison with each of the rail ways of Ohio, and the precedent of two-cent fare for way passen gers on apart of that road is urged as a reason why two cents is enough for any passengers on any'of the roads here. Book The Romance of Modern Railways Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Romance of Modern Railways Classic Reprint written by Thomas W. Corbin and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Romance of Modern Railways Most middle-aged men of to-day can remember the time when their one boyish ambition was to be an engine-driver; but their sons found a rival interest in the flying machine and desired above all things to be airmen. Flying and flying machines, however, have not and cannot have so many interesting features as are to be found upon engines and trains, with the result that the interest has swung back to the railway, and most boys of to-day are as keen about them as ever their fathers were. It is for such boys that this book is intended more than anyone else, but it is hoped, nevertheless, that it may make an even wider appeal. The writer knows an uncle who regularly buys a certain boys' periodical. He buys it, of course, to give to his nephew, but his friends notice that he always reads it through himself first, and, although this book may be intended for the sons and nephews, it is quite possible that some fathers and uncles may find it to their liking. The writing of it has been a labour of love, and if all readers get the same pleasure in reading it which the writer got in writing it, it is going to add largely to the sum of human happiness. Book The Drift Toward Government Ownership of Railways Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Drift Toward Government Ownership of Railways Classic Reprint written by Benjamin L. Winchell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-16 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Drift Toward Government Ownership of Railways There is an unmistakable drift toward government ownership of rail ways in the United States. This ten deney is probably most apparent to those closely identified with railway affairs; but it is also evident to many who are interested in the railway busi ness chiefly, or only, as observers and students of economic, industrial, and political problems. In the first place, there has been for some years a rather unsteady but cer tain increase in the number of socialists in the country; and those who thus fa vor public ownership and management of all of the means of both production and distribution must be counted in with those others who favor public acquisition of the principal means of distribution. There has also been an increase in the number of those who advocate public ownership of all public utilities, of which steam railways are the largest. Finally, there has been a mighty growth in the number who favor very stringent regulation of railways, and who have succeeded in getting this policy adopted. The last-named class, which is much the largest, may finally turn the scale for public ownership. For its members now expect much from regulation lower rates, better service, smaller railway dividends, complete elimination of traffic discriminations.
