Excerpt: ...by pistons actuated by steam, compressed air, or water, or by atmospheric pressure acting on a partial vacuum created on the opposite side of a piston. In the best continuous break provision is made to allow the pressure on its break-blocks to be so adjusted, or to so adjust itself, that the wheels shall not become skidded, but shall revolve at the speed best adapted to develop the greatest retarding force. One of the most important points to be aimed at is that the break shall be capable of being applied and released with rapidity and certainty when cases of necessity arise, and that no appreciable time shall be occupied in acquiring the power necessary to apply the break with its full intensity. A further necessity of a really satisfactory break is that it shall be such as can be used in the ordinary working of a train, and not restricted to use as a special apparatus in case of a threatened accident. It is not desirable, on account of the unavoidable strains and shocks which the process occasions, that as a rule the full power of the break should be applied suddenly to a train at full speed, and it is much more advisable that the break should be applied gradually. Thus a satisfactory break is one that can be put on gradually in the every-day working of the traffic; but is also capable of being used at its highest power instantaneously when necessity arises. Breaks that are put on by releasing a spring or a weight which has previously been wround up or has been previously raised, meet the necessity of the break being available at its full power instantaneously; but they do not well carry out the other requirement of being convenient for ordinary working, as it is difficult to apply such breaks gradually or to take them off promptly. Book Tourism Marketing

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tourism Marketing: On Both Sides of the Counter is the fourth successful publication by the team that runs the bi-annual Advances in Tourism Marketing Conference, following its foundation by Prof. Metin Kozak. The current volume contains a selection of the best papers presented at the conference in Maribor, Slovenia, in September 2011. As that year’s conference title indicates, it comprises research important for tourism management, by focusing on tourist behaviour with relevance to managerial strategies and operational practices, as well as on business operations, vision and goals, and their impact on tourist experiences. Contributions are clearly arranged into five parts covering topical consumption issues: image, satisfaction, and social and environmental research results. The last two sections cover timely and managerially relevant contributions on tourism ITC, innovation and competitiveness research. The contributions reflect the vibrancy of ATMC and the high calibre of researchers the conference attracts. The book offers itself as a reader for researchers and students of tourism as well as a compelling update on topical research issues in tourism marketing.

Book Cultural Tourism

Download or read book Cultural Tourism written by Hilary du Cros and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-12-05 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cultural Tourism remains the only book to bridge the gap between cultural tourism and cultural and heritage management. The first edition illustrated how heritage and tourism goals can be integrated in a management and marketing framework to produce sustainable cultural tourism. The current edition takes this further to base the discussion of cultural tourism in the theory and practice of cultural and heritage management (CM and CHM), under the understanding that for tourism to thrive, a balanced approach to the resource base it uses must be maintained. An ‘umbrella approach’ to cultural tourism represents a unique feature of the book, proposing solutions to achieve an optimal outcome for all sectors. Reflecting the many important developments in the field this new edition has been completely revised and updated in the following ways: • New sections on tangible and intangible cultural heritage and world heritage sites. • Expanded material on cultural tourism product development, the cultural tourism market and consumer behaviour, planning and delivery of exceptional experiences • New case studies throughout drawn from cultural attractions in developing countries such as Southeast Asia, China, South Africa and the Pacific as well as from the developed world, particularly the United States, Britain, Japan, Singapore, Australia and Canada. Written by experts in both tourism and cultural heritage management, this book will enable professionals and students to gain a better understanding of their own and each other’s roles in achieving sustainable cultural tourism. It provides a blueprint for producing top-quality, long-term cultural tourism products.
