Book Railway Shop Up to Date

Download or read book Railway Shop Up to Date written by Maham H. Haig and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Railway Shop Up to Date: A Reference Book of Up to Date American Railway Shop Practice This book goes forth as a record of what is found to exist as the best in railroad shop practice, design, construction and equipment. The editor has striven earnestly and long to compile all the available data valuable to the railroad official seeking information, whether it be for the purpose of building a new shop to meet modern and future conditions, or increasing the efficiency of an existing plant. It was not originally intended to make this book so broad and comprehensive; but there was found to be such a vast quantity of related data and information on the subject, that it was deemed advisable to extend its scope to its present proportions. All material has been condensed as much as possible without sacrificing necessary details or impairing the lucidity of any descriptions, so that each kind of shop or particular kind of practice followed, may be clearly understood and comprehended. The value of such a compilation as this depends largely upon the proper arrangement of facts in their natural and logical sequence so that the effects and results of the evolutions continually in progress, in the up to date railway shop, are readily arrived at by the reader. We have based our statements upon and drawn our conclusions from conditions as we have found them and have not theorized upon ideal conditions. We want this work to stand for exactly what its name implies. There are so many good shops, each apparently the best under the peculiar governing conditions and each new shop to be built hereafter will be subject to its own governing conditions, not possible to predict here, that it would be manifestly the sheerest folly to lay down a rigid policy or standard to be followed. We give what are found to be facts and governing conditions, but we know that there are new questions yet to be raised and unknown quantities in shop problems to be determined before any given problem can be solved. It is necessary to go from the known to the unknown in this as in other lines of progress and we have attempted to supply information to help as far as we may. There is no doubt but that there will be found here one or more illustrations which will approximately fit the conditions to be met in building a new plant or modernizing an old one. While it is unlikely that an attempt would be made to plan one shop as an identical counterpart of another, each shop illustrated or described contains some features worthy of being emulated. Our aim has been attained if we have shown clearly the various types of modem railway shops. We wish to express our appreciation of the kindly assistance rendered by the railroad officials with whom we have come in contact during the course of this work. It has been a pleasure indeed to note the willingness to assist and the interest evidenced in our undertaking. Book Railway Practice

Download or read book Railway Practice written by Samuel C. Bree and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-25 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Railway Practice: A Collection of Working Plans and Practical Details of Construction in the Public Works of the Most Celebrated Engineers This early impression on the author's mind was confirmed by the opinion of gentlemen the best qualified to decide on such a question, and it became conviction when he was assured by his intelligent publisher, that inquiries after such works were frequent, and the demand for information connected with them urgent. Satisfied, therefore, as to the paucity of such information, and the consequent value of any particulars descriptive of the minutiae of this most important branch of engineering, he could not hesitate as to the propriety of producing his Railway Practice, to which he now solicits the favourable notice of the reader. Book Modern Practice in the Construction and Maintenance of Rail Joints and Bonds in Electric Railways Classic Reprint

Download or read book Modern Practice in the Construction and Maintenance of Rail Joints and Bonds in Electric Railways Classic Reprint written by E. R. Shepard and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Practice in the Construction and Maintenance of Rail Joints and Bonds in Electric Railways Owing to the peculiar nature of the services that rail bonds and joints are called upon to perform and the great variety of condi tions under which they operate, it was recognized that informa tion obtained under service conditions over a period of years would be far more reliable and satisfactory than any laboratory or short-time tests that could be conducted. Many laboratory tests have been made by the manufacturers on the durability and resistance of different types of bonds and j oints, and while such tests are valuable in determining the characteristics of a bond, they can not be taken as a criterion for the performance of the average bond under service conditions. Book Some European Railway Practices Classic Reprint

Download or read book Some European Railway Practices Classic Reprint written by Henry William Jacobs and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-06-19 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some European Railway Practices The position of railway officers and foremen is on a higher plane on the European roads. In this country, mechanical engineers of experience in charge of the design of cars and locomotives, master mechanics with important divisions under their charge, and shop superintendents, to say nothing of traveling engineers, general foremen, shop foremen, etc., in many cases receive salaries which are smaller than the wages earned by many of the men working under their direction. Is such a condition productive of the best results? While Mr. Jacobs has gone into the design and practices on foreign roads to a greater or less extent, and his observations in this respect are important because he is so thoroughly conversant with Ameri can methods, yet, important as these are, those mat ters concerning the organization which he has drawn to our attention are far more important.
