Book excerpt: This title incorporates the 15th proceedings of the very successful International Conference on Railway Engineering Design and Operation (COMPRAIL) series, which began in Frankfurt 1987 and continued in Rome (1990); Washington (1992); Madrid (1994); Berlin (1996); Lisbon (1998); Bologna (2000); Lemnos (2002); Dresden (2004); Prague (2006); Toledo (2008); Beijing (2010); the New Forest, home of the Wessex Institute (2012) and, again in Rome in 2014. The papers presented at this conference aim to update the use of advanced systems, promoting their general awareness throughout the management, design, manufacture and operation of railways and other emerging passenger, freight and transit systems. With the conference attracting a variety of specialists, including railway engineers, designers of advanced train control systems and computer specialists, the book particularly emphasises the use of computer systems in advanced railway engineering. Topics include but are not restricted to: Advanced train control Operations quality; Risk management; Planning and policy; Energy supply and consumption; Communications and signalling; Operational planning; Interface management; Systems integration; Maglev; High speed technology; Interoperability; Passenger flow management; Computer simulations and Driverless and automatic train operation.

Book Rail Human Factors around the World

Download or read book Rail Human Factors around the World written by John R Wilson and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2012-09-13 with total page 870 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rail human factors/ergonomics community has grown quickly and extensively, and there is much increased recognition of the vital importance of ergonomics/human factors by rail infrastructure owners, rail operating companies, system developers, regulators and national and trans-national government. This book, the third on rail human factors, is drawn from papers presented at the Lille 3rd International Conference on Rail Human Factors. The contributions cover the range of human and organisational issues on the railway, from driving to signalling and control to maintenance and engineering work, to passengers and security issues such as trespass, and address improvements in safety, reliability, use of capacity, efficiency and quality. The book represents the best of recent work in rail human factors, and starts to define the framework for the next few years. As well as the human factors areas listed above, the conference and thus the book are notable for sessions on simulation in rail human factors and on human factors in metro design and operation. The book also reflects the increased attention being paid to, and developments in, understanding all aspects of rail stakeholders’ behaviour, and also the contribution of ergonomics/human factors to innovative network control systems which will enhance reliability, safety and use of capacity. The book will be of interest to a number of groups: those working in the rail sector from a human factors point of view; the larger rail industry and related bodies generally; and in terms of transferrable knowledge to ergonomists and human factors specialists working in other industries.

Book Intelligent Transport Systems and Travel Behaviour

Download or read book Intelligent Transport Systems and Travel Behaviour written by Grzegorz Sierpiński and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-09-05 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Does application of countdown timers at traffic lights affect pedestrian safety? How can one model walking routes in transport systems using open source tools? What features should be particularly taken into account while implementing highly advanced ICT components in contemporary towns? What scenario for the development of Intelligent Transport Systems should be chosen for a specific area? How to estimate the impact of the substances emitted by vehicles on climate changes? Answers to these and many other questions can be found in this publication. It also comprises numerous analyses based on legitimate data sources, presenting the close relation between travel behaviours and the organisational as well as technical changes introduced in what is contemporarily referred as smart cities. At present and in the nearest future, technologically advanced transport systems require and will require considerable development of electromobility and the emphasis being placed on multimodality, therefore all these problems have been properly addressed in this publication. With regard to the research results discussed and the selected solutions which find practical application, the publication is dedicated to three groups of recipients: ·Scientists and researchers (ITS field) ·Local authorities (responsible for the transport system on the urban and the regional level) ·Representatives of business (traffic strategy management) and industry (manufacturers of ITS components). The publication entitled Intelligent Transport Systems and Travel Behaviour contains selected papers submitted to and presented at the 13th ”Transport Systems. Theory and Practice” Scientific and Technical Conference organised by the Department of Transport Systems and Traffic Engineering at the Faculty of Transport of the Silesian University of Technology. The conference was held on 19-21 September 2016 in Katowice (Poland). More details at www.TSTP.polsl.pl
