Book Railway Nationalization Classic Reprint

Download or read book Railway Nationalization Classic Reprint written by Clement Edwards and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Railway Nationalization Ever since a date even earlier than that at which Bentham's editor, Sir John Bowring, called meetings to advocate the State Purchase of Railways, I have favoured the reform which Mr. Clement Edwards with much force urges, but have feared - so great is the power of the Companies in Parliament - that we should be made to pay for it too high a price. The author of Railway Nationalization seems not only to have proved his theoretic case, but to have partly met my doubts or practical objections. Agreeing as I do with most of what he has written, except, indeed, as to that growth of cities which we cannot prevent, and which Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide, and Perth show to be no unmixed evil, I am happy to do aught I can to help him to readers, who, however, will be drawn to him by his subject and by his vigour, without this little prefatory note. This book was released on 2017-10-11 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Railway Nationalisation and the Average Citizen If the Average Citizen would investigate the railway situation, he must needs depend upon the press for information. The question is of vast importance, but it is economic; and Canada has no economic literature. Perhaps that is putting it a little too strongly, but the few books written on economic subjects can scarcely be said to constitute a literature; and, as far as I know, not one has been written on the present railway question. Then came the agitation on the part of the railway workers for better pay and conditions of labour. Furthermore, the efforts of certain influential sections of shareholders to enforce reform methods of working on the respective Boards, and the increase in the number of serious accidents, have also played their part in bringing the whole working and administration of the railroads before the public. Download or read book Railways and Nationalisation Classic Reprint written by Edwin A. Pratt and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-14 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Railways and Nationalisation The considerable degree of attention which has been attracted to railway problems of late, and the views held in some quarters that State ownership and operation would provide an effective solution of labour difficulties on British railways, have led me to think that a re-issue of the present work, originally published in 1908, might be of advantage to those who wish to study the question of Railway Nationalisation from the point of view of practical politics rather than from the academical standpoints favoured by debating societies, school parlia ments, and the exponents of those socialistic programmes in which railway nationalisation naturally takes a leading position. In the light of the recent attempt to bring about a general railway strike in this country, the matters dealt with in Chapter V III., State Railways and Labour, should, I think, be of special interest at the present moment. Book The Nationalisation of Railways Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Nationalisation of Railways Classic Reprint written by George James Wardle and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-29 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Nationalisation of Railways No country has ever been able to adopt entirely the principle of laisser faire 1n regard to railways. In all countries control of some kind exists, ranging from a Commission with no compelling force behind it except public opinion (as in' America, to that'of absolute ownership. In the United Kingdom we have so far steered a middle course. The genius for compromise, so characteristically British, has produced our present hybrid system - a system which is neither logical nor effective. So gingerly have we treated the problems involved - the transport of goods, the carriage of passengers, and the employment of an army of workpeople - that it is safe to say that never was there more profound dissatisfaction amongst shareholders, traders, travellers, and workers than exists at the present time. Magazines and newspapers have given vent to the dissatisfaction of shareholders, traders, and travellers threats of strike and disruption have been the mode of expressionof the workers. This general dissatisfaction is well grounded. The burden of capital grows ever greater, dividends are declining, the legitimate demands of traders are ignored, and the railway worker finds himself unable to keep pace with the progress of other workmen in the improvement Of his conditions. Book The Railways and the Republic Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Railways and the Republic Classic Reprint written by James F. Hudson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-09 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Railways and the Republic A new social power sometimes rises to immense proportions before its nature and effects are under stood. The full bearing of its heretofore unknown forces upon future generations can then be learned only by experience. The mediaeval rulers who first organized their realms into feudal holdings saw only that the barons would afi'ord military protection against savage enemies, and preserve order among scarcely more civilized subjects. But they hardly dreamed of the rise of powerful feudal princes whose power would be greater than the throne from which they obtained it, and who could set up and pull down kings at their will. The men who first wrote pamphlets in favor of education and justice for the lower orders of France could not foresee the terrible outburst of popular strength which was fated to involve in one common destruction both the instrumentalities which had main tained oppression for centuries and the men who had made the first uncertain steps towards asserting the rights of man. Watt could see in the steam which lifted the lid from the tea-kettle a force which might yield man some aid in his labors; but he could not. Book Democracy and Education

Download or read book Democracy and Education written by John Dewey and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 1916 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: . Renewal of Life by Transmission. The most notable distinction between living and inanimate things is that the former maintain themselves by renewal. A stone when struck resists. If its resistance is greater than the force of the blow struck, it remains outwardly unchanged. Otherwise, it is shattered into smaller bits. Never does the stone attempt to react in such a way that it may maintain itself against the blow, much less so as to render the blow a contributing factor to its own continued action. While the living thing may easily be crushed by superior force, it none the less tries to turn the energies which act upon it into means of its own further existence. If it cannot do so, it does not just split into smaller pieces (at least in the higher forms of life), but loses its identity as a living thing. As long as it endures, it struggles to use surrounding energies in its own behalf. It uses light, air, moisture, and the material of soil. To say that it uses them is to say that it turns them into means of its own conservation. As long as it is growing, the energy it expends in thus turning the environment to account is more than compensated for by the return it gets: it grows. Understanding the word "control" in this sense, it may be said that a living being is one that subjugates and controls for its own continued activity the energies that would otherwise use it up. Life is a self-renewing process through action upon the environment.

Book The Great Transformation

Download or read book The Great Transformation written by Karl Polanyi and published by Penguin Classics. This book was released on 2024-06-20 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'One of the most powerful books in the social sciences ever written. ... A must-read' Thomas Piketty 'The twentieth century's most prophetic critic of capitalism' Prospect Karl Polanyi's landmark 1944 work is one of the earliest and most powerful critiques of unregulated markets. Tracing the history of capitalism from the great transformation of the industrial revolution onwards, he shows that there has been nothing 'natural' about the market state. Instead of reducing human relations and our environment to mere commodities, the economy must always be embedded in civil society. Describing the 'avalanche of social dislocation' of his time, Polanyi's hugely influential work is a passionate call to protect our common humanity. 'Polanyi's vision for an alternative economy re-embedded in politics and social relations offers a refreshing alternative' Guardian 'Polanyi exposes the myth of the free market' Joseph Stiglitz With a new introduction by Gareth Dale
