Book excerpt: Who better to discuss the origins and problems of late 19th century railroads than witty, erudite, Charles Francis Adams, Jr.' As a railroad executive, he knew the business intimately. As an Adams, he understood the politics and men of his time and could write about them in the most entertaining and enlightening manner possible.Charles Adams had been a colonel in the Union Army during the Civil War. At that time, his father was Lincoln's Minister to England and his young brother was the future author of what is still regarded as one of the great nonfiction books of the 20th century, "The Education of Henry Adams." Those three men also had two U.S. Presidents in their lineage.Altogether a fascinating and entertaining book."...in this day of hasty generalization, it will not do to forget that these are the conclusions of the man who has given more study than any other to the railroad problem, and is the best qualified man in this country to discuss it authoritatively. None can read it without profit and nobody who desires to think intelligently about railroads should neglect to do so.--THE NEW YORK TIMES

Book excerpt: Charles Francis Adams II (May 27, 1835 - May 20, 1915) was a member of the prominent Adams family. He served as a colonel in the Union Army during the American Civil War. After the war, he was a railroad regulator and executive, president, successively, of the Union Pacific Railroad, the Massachusetts Historical Society, and the American Historical Association. His writings and addresses both on problems of railway management and on historical subjects frequently gave rise to widespread controversy. In this work, first published in 1886, Adams writes with impressive expertise and clarity on the origins of and problems with the railroads in Europe and America. The section on origins is devoted mostly to some of the more entertaining and naively charming first-hand accounts of the opening ceremonies for, and early excursions on the first primitive railroads in Britain, South Carolina and Massachusetts. In the section on problems he describes the approaches taken by various countries to construct, operate, and regulate their railroad systems, especially in the United States where unbridled competition was the rule.At the time he wrote this work, American railroads were almost entirely unregulated and were engaged in ruthlessly self-destructive warfare with each other at great cost to the nation. He applies his considerable expertise to the problems associated with railroad services, regulations, competition, monopolies, associations, and responsibilities, and he offers well-considered opinions on how these problems needed to be solved taking into consideration the peculiar character of America and Americans.Railroads, written by a significant historian with considerable practical as well as academic experience, is both an important and an enjoyable read for any student of American history and business.

Book Amtrak America s Railroad

Download or read book Amtrak America s Railroad written by Geoffrey H. Doughty and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2021-09-07 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discover the story of Amtrak, America's Railroad, 50 years in the making. In 1971, in an effort to rescue essential freight railroads, the US government founded Amtrak. In the post–World War II era, aviation and highway development had become the focus of government policy in America. As rail passenger services declined in number and in quality, they were simultaneously driving many railroads toward bankruptcy. Amtrak was intended to be the solution. In Amtrak, America's Railroad: Transportation's Orphan and Its Struggle for Survival, Geoffrey H. Doughty, Jeffrey T. Darbee, and Eugene E. Harmon explore the fascinating history of this popular institution and tell a tale of a company hindered by its flawed origin and uneven quality of leadership, subjected to political gamesmanship and favoritism, and mired in a perpetual philosophical debate about whether it is a business or a public service. Featuring interviews with former Amtrak presidents, the authors examine the current problems and issues facing Amtrak and their proposed solutions. Created in the absence of a comprehensive national transportation policy, Amtrak manages to survive despite inherent flaws due to the public's persistent loyalty. Amtrak, America's Railroad is essential reading for those who hope to see another fifty years of America's railroad passenger service, whether they be patrons, commuters, legislators, regulators, and anyone interested in railroads and transportation history.

Book History of the Louisville Nashville Railroad

Download or read book History of the Louisville Nashville Railroad written by Maury Klein and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2014-04-23 with total page 600 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the Civil War, the Louisville and Nashville Railroad took the lead among southern railroads in developing rail systems and organizing transcontinental travel. Through two world wars, federal government control, internal crises, external dissension, the Depression, and the great Ohio River flood of 1937, the L&N Railroad remained one of the country's most efficient lines. It is a southern institution and a railroad buff's dream. When eminent railroad historian Maury Klein's definitive History of the Louisville and Nashville Railroad was first published in 1972, it quickly became one of the most sought after books on railroad history. This new edition both restores a hard-to-find classic to print and provides a new introduction by Klein detailing the L&N's history in the thirty years since the book was first published.
