Book excerpt: War is a brutal thing. Countries clash in a grand struggle for power, while belligerent nations mobilize their vast resources to tackle their opponents head-on. Both man and machine, and the supplies to support them, must be moved in mass quantity to have any hope of victory.World War I, or "The Great War" (as it was called at the time), was the first worldwide conflict of its kind, requiring mass mobilizations at unrivaled levels. The rail systems of nations across the globe were put to the test by the war effort. Tasked to move troops, equipment, ammunition, and supplies around the clock, railroads were pushed to the precipice of failure."The Great Railroad War," by Dr. Rudolph Daniels, delves into the often unrecognized and underappreciated history of United States rail operations during and immediately following World War I. Daniels' expertly-written academic history sheds light on the profound impact that American railroads and railroaders had on the war effort. The book covers the unpreparedness of the railroads for an unprecedented war, the 1918 government takeover to ensure operating efficiency, and the relinquishment of the railroads and groundbreaking Transportation Act of 1920.Covering more than just the history, Daniels discusses the operational details of United States rail shipments both at home and abroad, and how these operations interplayed and overlapped with military operations in France and Russia. Experience the unsung war of the twentieth century - The Great Railroad War.

Excerpt: ... forced to take cognizance of these causes, to note their certainty, persistence and relative importance, as they enter to affect the quantities with which he is dealing. 11. The law of increasing return is, primarily, strictly a concern of operation. It is the principle by which a given outlay may be brought to the greatest productivity. It applies at every link throughout the great chain that leads up to the actual transportation furnished, as well as at the ultimate point of service to the public. But at this point, in application of the law, there has been built up a great plant, which results in a large undistributable expense to be apportioned over the units of service performed. 12. This apportionment rests on the basis of use, since it cannot rest on the basis of cost, as there is no direct cost. This use must be determined from conditions outside the railroad's operation. It involves public and general economic questions. Thus are united into a most complicated problem, the two principles of highly differentiated values and highly differentiated costs. The whole matter is first a question of fact; and aggregated and ordered facts that lead on to general principles are statistics. i INDEX. I. S. C. C--Interstate Commerce Classification. Book Railroad Operations

Download or read book Railroad Operations written by J. Shirley Eaton and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Railroad Operations: How to Know Them; From a Study of the Accounts and Statistics Mr. William Mahl, comptroller of the Southern Pacific system, has tritely described statistics as the method of disciplining a property. This applies with equal force whether from the standpoint of the manager, the investor, or the public. In this contribution to the general subject, the effort has been to work out some of the principles on which railway statistics rest, show how they should be used for practical results, and point out fallacies to be avoided. Exact figures, because of the special condition which are necessary to explain them, have been carefully avoided. It is hoped it may prove useful to managers, investors, students, and railway experts. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Trains and Technology

Download or read book Trains and Technology written by Anthony J. Bianculli and published by University of Delaware Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work presents a view of the history of American railroads in the nineteenth century from a somewhat different perspective. The maturation of the railroad is traced through an exposition of the railroad technology that was developed and applied during the period. Throughout the nineteenth century, a symbiotic relationship existed between railroading and technology, each dependent upon the state and progress of the other to a large degree. A great deal of new technology was created for the railroad, and the railroad, in turn, applied new technology as it became available. Volume four is about bridges and tunnels, and signals. An exposition of the various types of bridges, their foundations, and the materials of which they were made is included. Tunnels and marine railroad operations are treated also. The development of signal systems is an area that has been overlooked or neglected in the general literature but is fully covered here. The text of this volume is accompanied by 145 illustrations and accurate drawings of the equipment and appliances, many of which have not been published before outside of old technical journals. Anthony J. Bianculli is a mechanical engineer with extensive and varied experience in a Fortune 500 company.
