Book Railroad Location Surveys and Estimates Classic Reprint

Download or read book Railroad Location Surveys and Estimates Classic Reprint written by F. Lavis and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Railroad Location Surveys and Estimates While, of course, there must be a somewhat wide latitude in methods to adapt them to varying conditions, there seems to be growing at the present time, especially in the West, where most of the railroad location in this country is being done at the present time, what may be regarded as an approach to a standard in this work, and it is with the idea of defining these methods that the present book has been undertaken; and also to describe, what the party will actually have to do in the field, the actual details of work, not only in making the surveys, but in the production of the maps, profiles and records, and estimates of cost, and data for making the same. The economics of railroad location, as treated by the late A. M. Wellington, have been barely touched on, the idea of the author being to take the subject up to the point where nine-tenths of the locating engineers (as that title is usually used in the West) have to, that is, with a general route, within more or less wide limits, and a maximum desired grade decided on, the prob lem being to work out the details of the location between two given points with these conditions given. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of the Survey of the Projected Line of Rail Road From Stanstead to Montreal: With Estimates of the Cost of Construction The line in this Township can be changed, so as to avoid the high summit near Peasley Pond, by taking a more westerly route, thereby avoiding a grade greater than 60 feet to a mile, and also the deep cutting at the summit. If the country is studied as it should be, in this the most difficult part of the route, a line may be obtained that will not cost more than three-fourths of the present estimates for this Township and the Township of Bamston. Book Report of Surveys Across the Continent in 1867 68 on the Thirty Fifth and Thirty Second Parallels for a Route Extending the Kansas Pacific Railway to the Pacific Ocean at San Francisco and San Diego Classic Reprint

Download or read book Report of Surveys Across the Continent in 1867 68 on the Thirty Fifth and Thirty Second Parallels for a Route Extending the Kansas Pacific Railway to the Pacific Ocean at San Francisco and San Diego Classic Reprint written by William Jackson Palmer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-16 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of Surveys Across the Continent, in 1867-'68, on the Thirty-Fifth and Thirty-Second Parallels, for a Route Extending the Kansas Pacific Railway to the Pacific Ocean at San Francisco and San Diego It should be remarked, furthermore, that although much of the country covered by these surveys had been previously exa mined with great fidelity by topographical engineers of the army, those explorations - made with barometer and viameter - could not, of course, claim the accuracy of measurements made with the chain and level. Besides, many developments have been made throughout this region, in the fifteen years that have elapsed since the period of the Government Surveys for a Pacific Railroad, which throw new light upon the ques tion of routes in every respect. Once a term incognita, there is now no longer any necessity for vague estimates or surmises. An amount of carefully gleaned information has been obtained, sufficient to admit of correct deductions upon all points of im portance. Our own surveys have extended over every season of the year - crossing the most mountainous regions in the coldest and warmest, and the most arid plains in the dry as well as the wet season; while the alternate lines and side explorations cover a belt wide enough to acquaint us with the topography and resources of a large extent of tributary country.
