This report documents the current problems associated with rail shipment of coal as identified by the representatives of 5 major coal companies. Current state-of-the-art technology is reviewed for locomotives, freight cars, unit trains, remote locomotive consists, train control systems, railway electrification, wayside surveillance of trains, computer technology, and track. Ongoing technological developments and research in radial axle trucks, reduction in freight car weight, reduction of train resistance, AC traction, rail profile grinding, concrete track ties, rear-of-train telemetry, locomotive event recorders, and advance train control systems are summarized.

Its development can assist in providing Canada's domestic needs, it can provide spin-off beneftis to otlher industries, and it can help to improve our balance of trade ane expenditures abroad. Substantial benefits will acrue to Canada as a whole, and to western Canada in particular, from the exploitation of this important resource.
