Book Rail Crack Monitoring Using Acoustic Emission Technique

Download or read book Rail Crack Monitoring Using Acoustic Emission Technique written by Dan Li and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-06-23 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis provides an innovative strategy for rail crack monitoring using the acoustic emission (AE) technique. The field study presented is a significant improvement on laboratory studies in the literature in terms of complex rail profile and crack conditions as well as high operational noise. AE waves induced by crack propagation, crack closure, wheel-rail impact and operational noise were obtained through a series of laboratory and field tests, and analyzed by wavelet transform (WT) and synchrosqueezed wavelet transform (SWT). A wavelet power-based index and the enhanced SWT scalogram were sequentially proposed to classify AE waves induced by different mechanisms according to their energy distributions in the time–frequency domain. A novel crack sizing method taking advantage of crack closure-induced AE waves was developed based on fatigue tests in the laboratory. The propagation characteristics of AE waves in the rail were investigated, and Tsallis synchrosqueezed wavelet entropy (TSWE) with time was finally brought forward to detect and locate rail cracks in the field. The proposed strategy for detection, location and sizing of rail cracks helps to ensure the safe and smooth operation of the railway system. This thesis is of interest to graduate students, researchers and practitioners in the area of structural health monitoring.

Book New Approaches in Modeling Railway Crack Quantification System

Download or read book New Approaches in Modeling Railway Crack Quantification System written by Upamanyu Banerjee and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With an eye to prevent derailment of high speed trains, vis-a-vis unwarranted loss of lives and property, a formalism is developed. A software model of Rolling Contact Fatigue (RCF) crack propagation in railway tracks is designed, simulating the alarming stress intensity factor around the advancing fatigue cracks. RCF crack monitoring system with acoustic emission count signals, describing the damage threshold of railway tracks is designed. It is noticed through the model that the observed Acoustic Emission (AE) count at a particular instant of time in a specific location of railway track is a true indication of the vulnerability of rail failures. Further to provide hardware validation, a novel method using the intensity of back scattered light is implemented. In view of difference in the intensity of back scattered light from surface irregularities, a model is developed to find out the threshold intensity of scattered light that ensures safety in the railway system against fatigue failure. The proposed model, a completely new of its kind bears a high socio-technological value as it entails the design of an intelligent control system to prevent train accidents."

Book Structural Health Monitoring of Large Structures Using Acoustic Emission Case Histories

Download or read book Structural Health Monitoring of Large Structures Using Acoustic Emission Case Histories written by Kanji Ono and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2020-11-23 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Acoustic emission (AE) techniques have successfully been used for assuring the structural integrity of large rocket motorcases since 1963, and their uses have expanded to ever larger structures, especially as structural health monitoring (SHM) of large structures has become the most urgent task for engineering communities around the world. The needs for advanced AE monitoring methods are felt keenly by those dealing with aging infrastructures. Many publications have appeared covering various aspects of AE techniques, but documentation of actual applications of AE techniques has been mostly limited to reports of successful results without technical details that allow objective evaluation of the results. There are some exceptions in the literature. In this Special Issue of the Acoustics section of Applied Sciences, we seek contributions covering these exceptions cited here. Here, we seek contributions describing case histories of AE applications to large structures that have achieved the goals of SHM by providing adequate technical information supporting the success stories. Types of structures can include aerospace and geological structures, bridges, buildings, factories, maritime facilities, off-shore structures, etc. Experiences with AE monitoring methods designed and proven for large stru

Book Monitoring Crack Advance Using Acoustic Emission and Combined Acoustic Emission and Potential Drop in Zr 2 5 Nb

Download or read book Monitoring Crack Advance Using Acoustic Emission and Combined Acoustic Emission and Potential Drop in Zr 2 5 Nb written by G. Lin and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experithental results are reported on the application of acoustic emission (AE) and combined acoustic emission and potential drop (PD) in crack advance measurement. Acoustic emission by itself is not a quantitastive technique for measuring crack advance. Compared with the application of only PD, using both simultaneously turns out to be quite beneficial. Used to measure delayed hydride cracking velocity in Zr-2.5% Nb, combined AE and PD, together with other techniques such as fractography, produces more reliable results with higher accuracy for isothermal conditions and particularly during temperature transients. Information about the correlation between AE and PD signals has been also obtained, which improves our understanding of the processes being studied.

Book Structural Health Monitoring Using Emerging Signal Processing Approaches with Artificial Intelligence Algorithms

Download or read book Structural Health Monitoring Using Emerging Signal Processing Approaches with Artificial Intelligence Algorithms written by Chunwei Zhang and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2024-11-06 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Structural health monitoring is a powerful tool across civil, mechanical, automotive, and aerospace engineering, allowing the assessment and measurement of physical parameters in real time. Processing changes in the vibration signals of a dynamic system can detect, locate, and quantify any damage existing in the system. This book presents a comprehensive state‐of‐the‐art review of the applications in time, frequency, and time‐frequency domains of signal‐processing techniques for damage perception, localization, and quantification in various structural systems. Experimental investigations are illustrated, including the development of a set of damage indices based on the signal features extracted through various signal‐processing techniques to evaluate sensitivity in damage identification. Chapters summarize the application of the Hilbert–Huang transform based on three decomposition methods such as empirical mode decomposition, ensemble empirical mode decomposition, and complete ensemble empirical mode decomposition with adaptive noise. Also, the chapters assess the performance and sensitivity of different approaches, including multiple signal classification and empirical wavelet transform techniques in damage detection and quantification. Artificial neural networks for automated damage identification are introduced. This book suits students, engineers, and researchers who are investigating structural health monitoring, signal processing, and damage identification of structures.
