Book excerpt: Hella Mauzer was the first-ever woman Inspector in the Helsinki Homicide Unit. But she’s been fired despite solving her first murder case. This is Helsinki, March 1953. An unusually long and cold winter, everywhere frozen sea, ice-covered lakes and rivers. In a port city flooded with refugees, who cares if a young woman goes missing? An up-and-coming inspector who views this as an opportunity to advance his career. A heartbroken PI with a score to settle. They have yet to discover one thing: the most dangerous lies are those we tell ourselves. It all begins when Nellie, a prostitute working in a high-end brothel is found floating upside down in Helsinki Harbor. Not exactly a high priority case for the Helsinki police, so homicide chief Jokela passes the job to his former colleague Hella. It’s beginning to look like a serial killer is at work when Elena, another lady of the night, narrowly escapes being driven into the harbor by her 19-year-old john. Problem was he had handcuffed her in the car. And to add further excitement to Hella’s life, the madam is soon found dead in the garden outside the brothel. What begins like a taut whodunit turns into something more tantalizing and psychological as Hella investigates different suspects, including Steve, the US DJ and love of her life, reluctant to leave his wife for Hella, and the fascinating Inspector Mustonen, charismatic, ambitious and trying desperately to live up to the standards of his high maintenance wife. There are dark powers at play, as well as lighter passages, particularly those involving Anita, voluptuous but savvy, freshly arrived from Lapland to join the Helsinki police force, a most unwanted roommate for Hella. Sadly she too ends up in deep trouble, in a satisfying denouement of twists and turns.

Book Chuk De India a Path to Prosperity

Download or read book Chuk De India a Path to Prosperity written by Narinder Singh Jolly and published by Archway Publishing. This book was released on 2013-08-28 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1991, it was time for India to shed its obsolete guiding principles. Fundamental changes would be needed to transform Indias economic lethargy into vibrancy and vigor. In Chuk De India: A Path to Prosperity, authors Bir Singh Gujral and Narinder Singh Jolly chronicle Indias post-1991 economic renaissance, which turned the nation into an emerging global economy. Gujral and Jolly show how India, the worlds second-largest country, became a key actor on the global stage. It provides the answers to questions about Indias transformation: What 1991 economic crisis forced India to secure an emergency loan from the IMF by pledging sixty-seven tons of gold as collateral? Why was Dr. Manmohan Singh selected as the finance minister? What revolutionary reforms were implemented to avert the crisis and make India the second-fastest growing economy of the world? How was India able to maintain a six to seven percent economic expansion while major economies suffered through a meltdown recession in 20072008? What systemic and social challenges did India confront to become a more prosperous nation? Chuk De India: A Path to Prosperity explores how India currently stands as one of the most powerful and attractive world economies, how it is recognized as an emerging super power, and what it must do to maintain that status.

Book The Disruptor

Download or read book The Disruptor written by Debashish Mukerji and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2021-12-08 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Once you start reading, it's almost impossible to put this book down. This is not simply a biography - it is a serious work of history.' - Karan Thapar 'An admiring and admirable account of the life of a very complex public personality.' - Jairam Ramesh Vishwanath Pratap Singh, India's seventh Prime Minister, struck Indian politics with the force of a tornado. Primarily remembered for implementing the recommendations of the Mandal Commission report, which provided reservations in Central government services for the first time to the Other Backward Classes, he deserves a place in history for much more-from conducting raids on the biggest business houses of his time when he was finance minister, to investigating murky defence deals as defence minister (which cost him his job); bringing together a divided Opposition to form an unlikely coalition government at the Centre comprising the BJP and the communist parties, to spearheading the biggest airlift evacuation in Indian history-of Indians stranded in Kuwait during the first Gulf War. V.P. Singh weathered repeated crises during his eleven-month prime ministerial tenure: the rise of insurgency in Kashmir, starting with the kidnapping of his home minister's daughter by terrorists; L.K. Advani's rath yatra in support of the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya, which led to communal riots; and, above all, the backlash that followed the Mandal Commission report's implementation. Known for his integrity and honesty, V.P. Singh ended up antagonizing both the Congress and the BJP--perhaps one of the reasons he has not been given the posthumous attention he deserves. The Disruptor is a richly detailed account of his extraordinarily eventful life, told in the context of his times.

Book excerpt: 'Your story has left me gasping. Though I did not remember the ferocious details, I had a fairly strong recollection of the incandescent feelings expressed in it. But I wasn't prepared for the full burst of passion shown by the lovers, and the fitting, though brutal, end. [...] When did you write it? No, don't tell me. I know you wrote it soon after I left India. But let me assure you, dearest Maya, that the passion still abides with me... or shall I say, with us...' Almost forty years after the end of their passionate affair in New Delhi of the late 1970s, Kevin, a vicar devoted to the political struggle for Scottish independence, and Maya, a reputed author of Hindi literary works, re-establish contact--this time over email. As they slowly re-weave the delicate tapestry of their connection with each missive, they share the stories of their histories, interests, desires and despairs with each other. Ultimately, Kevin and Maya must realize, each on their own, whether the strength of their remembered passion can match the four decades of quotidian life they have both since accrued. Written with grace and sensitivity, The Last Email is a moving account of two lives lived with passionate intensity, and steeped equally in love and in memory.

The volumes offer his selected speeches, articles, and interviews, starting from the 1950s, when he was in the academia, through the 1980s and 1990s, when he was India's finance minister, to 2004-14, when he was the prime minister of India. Book excerpt: H.D. Deve Gowda has been in public life for nearly seven decades. He started at the very bottom, as a member of the Holenarasipur Taluk Development Board and reached the very top as India's eleventh prime minister, in 1996. In between, he was an independent legislator, spent long years as leader of Opposition in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly, had been an effective irrigation and public works minister, and finally, chief minister in 1994 after many missed opportunities. Even twenty-five years after he stepped down as prime minister, he has remained relevant in Indian politics. Despite this long, arduous yet fascinating journey that began in a poor peasant household in the plains of Hassan, there has been no comprehensive assessment of his life and work. This biography endeavours to professionally fill the gap. The book's narrative is instructed by Gowda's rich parliamentary record, archival material and interviews conducted with people associated with him at various stages of his life. The layered narrative is further nuanced by Gowda's own voice, gargantuan memory, a close reading of the time when he made history and the currents of destiny that preceded it. Although Gowda has spent most of his years in Karnataka and has become a symbol of the federal idea, this book argues that the diverse national imagination and sincerity that he deployed as prime minister had magically lit up different corners of India. When Gowda became prime minister, many people intuitively registered that our democracy had not been rigged or captured by elites and dynasts, and there was indeed space in our system to rise for a self-made person with no godfathers. It generated hope and continues to do so.
