Download or read book The Sagas of Ragnar Lothbrok Ragnarss gur Lo br kar written by Matthew Leigh Embleton and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2021-09-11 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sagas of Ragnar Lothbrok (Ragnarssögur Loðbrókar) include 'The Saga of Ragnar Lothbrok' (Ragnars Saga Loðbrókar) and 'The Tale of Ragnar's Sons' (Ragnarssona þáttr). Also included is The Lay Of Kraka (Krákumál). The legend of Ragnar Lothbrok, one of the best known heroes of the Viking Age, has been told and re-told in an increasing variety of media. The story begins with the origins of Ragnar's second wife Aslaug (or Auslag). Then follows the heroic deed of Ragnar taking up the challenge laid down by King Herraud of Götaland, killing a giant serpent belonging to his daughter Thora Fortress-Hart, and winning her hand in marriage. Ragnar's later marriage to Aslaug is followed by the arrival of several sons, who one by one grow strong and plan raiding expeditions of their own. These stories survived by oral tradition over several centuries before being written down. They are preserved in the Hauksbók, and the manuscript NKS (1824b) 4to in Copenhagen, Denmark. This book is designed to be of use to anyone studying or with a keen interest in Old Norse or Old Icelandic, clearly showing how these languages work, and the influence of these languages on English. This edition is laid out in three columns, the original text, a literal word-for-word translation, and a modern translation. Also included is a word list with over 1,000 definitions.

Book The Sagas of Ragnar Lodbrok

Download or read book The Sagas of Ragnar Lodbrok written by and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2009 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although based on historical persons from the 9th century, Ragnar Lodbrok and his sons are the subjects of compelling legends dating from the Viking era. Warriors, raiders, and rulers, Ragnar and his sons inspired unknown writers to set down their stories over seven centuries ago. This volume presents new and original translations of the three major Old Norse texts that tell Ragnar's story: the Saga of Ragnar Lodbrok, the Tale of Ragnar's Sons, and the Sogubrot. Ragnar's death song, the Krakumal, and a Latin fragment called the List of Swedish Kings, complete the story. Extensive notes and commentary are provided, helping the reader to enter the world of these timeless stories of Viking adventure.

Book Handbook of Pre Modern Nordic Memory Studies

Download or read book Handbook of Pre Modern Nordic Memory Studies written by Jürg Glauser and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2018-11-19 with total page 1479 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, the field of Memory Studies has emerged as a key approach in the Humanities and Social Sciences, and has increasingly shown its ability to open new windows on Nordic Studies as well. The entries in this book document the work-to-date of this approach on the pre-modern Nordic world (mainly the Viking Age and the Middle Ages, but including as well both earlier and later periods). Given that Memory Studies is an ever expanding critical strategy, the approximately eighty contributors in this volume also discuss the potential for future research in this area. Topics covered range from texts to performance to visual and other aspects of material culture, all approached from within an interdisciplinary framework. International specialists, coming from such relevant fields as archaeology, mythology, history of religion, folklore, history, law, art, literature, philology, language, and mediality, offer assessments on the relevance of Memory Studies to their disciplines and show it at work in case studies. Finally, this handbook demonstrates the various levels of culture where memory had a critical impact in the pre-modern North and how deeply embedded the role of memory is in the material itself.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The legend of Ragnar Lothbrok, one of the best known heroes of the Viking Age, has been told and re-told in an increasing variety of media. The rich tradition of Icelandic literature survived by oral tradition over several centuries before being written down in the 13th Century. Old Norse is a North Germanic language spoken by inhabitants of Scandinavia from about the 7th to the 15th centuries. Old Icelandic is a variety of Old West Norse that emerged during the Norse settlement of Iceland in the second half of the 9th century. The meaning of the word 'saga' (plural: 'sǫgur' or 'sögur') translates as 'that which is said', or more widely: a 'saying', 'statement', 'story', 'tale', or 'narrative'. This book contains: - The Saga of Ragnar Lothbrok (Ragnars Saga Loðbrókar) - The Tale of Ragnar's Sons' (Ragnarssona þáttr) - The Lay Of Kraka (Krákumál) The texts are presented in their original Norse, with a literal word-for-word line-by-line translation, and a Modern English translation, all side-by-side. In this way, it is possible to see and feel how the Norse language worked and how it has evolved. Also included is a word list with 3,583 Norse words translated in to English, and 2,860 English words translated into Norse. This book is designed to be of use and interest to anyone with a passion for the Old Norse or Old Icelandic language, Norse history, or languages and history in general. Translated by Matthew Leigh Embleton Matthew Leigh Embleton is a language and history enthusiast, musician, composer, and producer living in London. www.matthewleighembleton.co.uk

Book The Sagas of Ragnar Lothbrok

Download or read book The Sagas of Ragnar Lothbrok written by Anonymous and published by . This book was released on 2021-05-13 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the second half of the 20th century until recent times, the legend of Ragnar Lothbrok, one of the best known heroes of the Viking Age, has been told and re-told in an increasing variety of novels, films, comic books, TV dramas, and video games. His nickname 'Lothbrok' (Loðbrók) has been translated as 'shaggy breeches' or 'hairy breeches', on account of the strange protective clothing or 'weapon-clothes' that he had made out of thick long fur, which he then had dipped or boiled in tar. The story here begins with the origins of Ragnar's second wife Aslaug, daughter of Sigurd and Brynhild, who from the age of three is cared for and protected by Heimir, who is then murdered at the hands of the peasants Aki and Grima, who give Aslaug the name 'Kráka' (Crow) and keep her in servitude. Then follows the heroic deed of Ragnar taking up the challenge, laid down by King Herraud of Götaland, of killing a giant serpent belonging to his daughter Thora Fortress-Hart, and winning her hand in marriage. Ragnar's later marriage to Aslaug is followed by the arrival of several sons, who one by one grow strong and plan raiding expeditions of their own. Jealous of his sons' success, and not wanting to be outdone, Ragnar plans an attack on the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Northumbria, despite the reservations of his wife Aslaug, and he is captured and killed at the hands of king Ælla of Northumbria. This book contains 'The Saga of Ragnar Lothbrok' (Ragnars Saga Loðbrókar), 'The Tale of Ragnar's Sons' (Ragnarssona þáttr), and The Lay of Kraka (Krákumál). Also included is a Norse word list, with over 7,700 definitions. Literal translations show you how the language works, literally, word by word.
