Book excerpt: The LUX detector is currently in operation at the Davis Campus at the 4850' level of the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) in Lead, SD to directly search for WIMP dark matter. Knowing the type and rate of backgrounds is critical in a rare, low energy event search, and LUX was designed, constructed, and deployed to mitigate backgrounds, both internal and external. An important internal background are decays of radon and its daughters. These consist of alpha decays, which are easily tagged and are a tracer of certain backgrounds, and beta decays, some of which are not as readily tagged and present a background for the WIMP search. We report on studies of alpha decay and discuss implications for the WIMP search.

Book excerpt: In experiments looking for rare events, like neutrinoless double beta decay (DBD0v) and dark matter search (DM), one of the main issues is to increase the experimental sensitivity through the material selection and production. In the specific the background contribution coming from the materials used for the detector realization has to be minimized. Moreover the net reduction of the background produced by the bulk part of the apparatus has raised concerns about the background contribution coming from the surfaces. Many procedures and techniques were developed during the last years in order to remove and to minimize the presence of possible contaminants on detector surfaces. To succeed in this strategy a big effort was put in defining all possible mechanisms that lead to surface contaminations, as well as specific cleaning procedures, which are able to reduce and control the surface radioactivity. The presence in air and gases of possible radioactive elements that can stick on the detector surfaces can lead to a recontamination process that will vanish all the applied cleaning procedures. Here is presented and analyzed the contribution to the background of rare events experiments like CUORE (DBD0v) and EDELWEISS (DM) produced by an exposure of their detector components to a big activity of 222Rn, radioactive daughter isotope from the 238U chain.

Book excerpt: The Dark Matter Experiment with Liquid Argon Using Pulse Shape Discrim- ination (DEAP) is a dark matter experiment based in the SNOLAB facility in Sudbury, Ontario. Its aim is to detect WIMPs, Weakly Interacting Massive Par- ticles, that may make up the missing component of the matter in our universe by the scintillation of liquid argon from nuclear recoils. A 7 kg prototype, DEAP-1, is currently in operation with work underway to scale up to a 1 tonne detector, DEAP-3600, by 2012. For DEAP-3600 to be a competitive dark matter search, a limit of 0.2 fiducial surface alpha events is required in the energy region of interest for three years of run time, or 150 total surface events. Of particular concern to the DEAP experiment is 222Rn and its daughter prod- ucts, as the alpha decays of these isotopes may create events in the detector that mimic a WIMP signature. The first half of this thesis concerns the testing and suc- cessful use of an activated carbon trap to eliminate 222Rn from the argon gas source in DEAP-1. The Carbo-Act F2/F3 grain activated carbon brand was tested as a potential ultra-low activity candidate for a DEAP-3600 filtration system and was found to have an upper limit for its 222Rn emanation rate of 284 atoms/day/kg. A temperature swing system is proposed. If operated at 110 K, an upper limit of five atoms of 222Rn can be expected to enter the detector from the trap. An indirect relationship between the number of low energy nuclear recoil events in the DEAP WIMP region of interest and the number of radon alpha decays was found. The ratio between the low energy events in the WIMP region of interest and the high energy alphas was found to be 0.18 ± 0.03 in the detector. From this, the upper limit of the contribution from the proposed radon trap to the WIMP background in DEAP-3600 will be be ten events for three years of run time, which is within acceptable limits.

Book excerpt: In An Engine, Not a Camera, Donald MacKenzie argues that the emergence of modern economic theories of finance affected financial markets in fundamental ways. These new, Nobel Prize-winning theories, based on elegant mathematical models of markets, were not simply external analyses but intrinsic parts of economic processes. Paraphrasing Milton Friedman, MacKenzie says that economic models are an engine of inquiry rather than a camera to reproduce empirical facts. More than that, the emergence of an authoritative theory of financial markets altered those markets fundamentally. For example, in 1970, there was almost no trading in financial derivatives such as "futures." By June of 2004, derivatives contracts totaling $273 trillion were outstanding worldwide.
