Download or read book Herefordshire Taxes in the Reign of Henry VIII written by Michael A. Faraday and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is mainly a transcription of the documents produced during the levy of taxation in Herefordshire in the reign of Henry VIII. In fact its scope is somewhat wider than this because it includes prerogative grants, such as loans and benevolences, made to the king, although it fails to notice that they rested on the individual consent of the taxpayers. The transcription is complete, and the original spelling is retained. As a copy of the taxation documents this is a splendid source. Whether the documents provide an accurate account of the wealth of the county is more difficult to say. The accuracy of tax assessments of the period is extremely complicated, as this reviewer's 'Taxation under the early Tudors, 1485-1547', published in 2004, seeks to explore. In this current volume the reader will be well satisfied with the accuracy of the range and typicality of the transcription of the Herefordshire taxation documents.

Download or read book Philanthropy in England 1480 1660 written by W. K. Jordan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-28 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study documents a momentous shift which occurred in men's aspirations for their society in the course of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The author has examined gifts and bequests left for charitable causes over a period of nearly two centuries. in ten English counties, in order to assess the changing pattern of social aspirations and observe the different 'velocities of change' among the several social classes. Professor Jordan examines the problem of poverty in the early modern world and discusses the various measures taken by the Tudors and Stuarts to deal with the needs of the poor. He concludes that poverty was principally relieved by an immense outpouring of charitable wealth. This wealth flowed principally from an urban aristocracy determined not only to care for the hopelessly destitute but so to enlarge the 'area of opportunity' so that poverty could be prevented. At the same time, the Elizabethan law of charitable uses marshalled this generous wealth into effective agencies. The study closes with a full assessment of the noble achievements of the period: the founding of a widespread and effective system of education, the establishment of almshouses in all parts of England, and extraordinairy adn fertile experiments with the several agencies of social rehabilitation. The author records in this voluma a great and enduring historical achievement; he records as well the triumph of the secular preoccupations of mankind. This book was first published in 1959.

Download or read book Pre 1841 Censuses Population Listings in the British Isles written by Colin R. Chapman and published by Genealogical Publishing Com. This book was released on 1998 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "It has long been an article of faith that the census of 1841 was the first British census to list the names of individuals. In nearly 90 pages of text, accompanied by unique notes and references to original documents, Mr. Chapman explodes this myth by describing hundreds of pre-1841 name lists (censuses, poll lists, national surveys, tax lists, parish enumerations, etc.), explaining most of them, as far as possible, in their historical framework. As logic would dictate, the work follows a chronological pattern, and for this new fifth edition the author has appended, in Appendix I, a county-by-county breakdown of the various censuses containing individuals' names with the dates of those censuses; and for completeness, in Appendix II, he has added a list of decennial censuses containing names of individuals from 1801 to 1831. This new fifth edition, completely rewritten, incorporates over 200 additional listings for Ireland, making it a unique chronological account of censuses and enumerations in the British Isles from 1086 to 1841"--Publisher's description.

Download or read book The Bristol and Gloucestershire Lay Subsidy of 1523 1527 written by Michael A. Faraday and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 614 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The records of the taxation levied under the Subsidy Act of 1523 have long been recognised as providing important evidence of the social and economic condition of the country in the first half of Henry VIII's reign. The surviving manuscripts, however, are fragmentary and defective, particularly those relating to Gloucestershire, and they are difficult to understand. The present volume brings together the available relevant material for Bristol and Gloucestershire. The records have been skilfully edited by a former Senior Inspector of Taxes who has previously published editions of comparable records for Herefordshire, Radnorshire, Shropshire and Worcestershire. The edition includes preliminary documents, the Anticipation of 1523, accounts of payments into the Exchequer, and assessments of wealthier taxpayers in 1526 and 1527. A full introduction and comprehensive indexes complete the edition.
