Book Radium and Radioactivity Classic Reprint

Download or read book Radium and Radioactivity Classic Reprint written by A. Thomas Cameron and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Radium and Radioactivity The properties peculiar to radium are traceable to the actions of the radiations. Such properties are' action on photographic plates, power of producing beautiful scintillations and coloured phosphorescence with zinc blende and certain other minerals, power to bring about many chemical actions, continual and relatively considerable evolution of heat, and various beneficial therapeutic actions which have resulted from its application in medicine. We, must, therefore, study these radiations with exactness, and must consider their mode of produc tion. The substances producing them are known. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Becquerel Rays: And the Properties of Radium IN writing this book, my object has been to give as clear and simple an account of the phenomena of radio-activity as the subject admits of, without sacrificing accuracy. The extraordinary properties of radium have excited general interest outside the scientific world, and there are probably many who would be glad to learn something of the subject, if they could find it explained without the use of technicalities. However essential mathematical methods may be in developing the subject, they are seldom really necessary in presenting the results. Moreover, some idea of the train of reasoning can generally be given in ordinary language. I have not found it possible to avoid assuming some elementary scientific knowledge on the part of the reader, but this has been reduced to the smallest limits, and probably a great part of the book will be intelligible without it. I have not attempted to describe all the pheno mena which have been recorded, but have confined myself to those which seemed most significant and interesting. Book excerpt: The fascinating, curious, and sometimes macabre history of radium as seen in its uses in everyday life. Of all the radioactive elements discovered at the end of the nineteenth century, it was radium that became the focus of both public fascination and entrepreneurial zeal. Half Lives tells the fascinating, curious, sometimes macabre story of the element through its ascendance as a desirable item – a present for a queen, a prize in a treasure hunt, a glow-in- the-dark dance costume – to its role as a supposed cure-all in everyday twentieth-century life, when medical practitioners and business people (reputable and otherwise) devised ingenious ways of commodifying the new wonder element, and enthusiastic customers welcomed their radioactive wares into their homes. Lucy Jane Santos—herself the proud owner of a formidable collection of radium beauty treatments—delves into the stories of these products and details the gradual downfall and discredit of the radium industry through the eyes of the people who bought, sold and eventually came to fear the once-fetishized substance. Half Lives is a new history of radium as part of a unique examination of the interplay between science and popular culture.

Book Radium and Radiotherapy

Download or read book Radium and Radiotherapy written by William S. Newcomet and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Radium and Radiotherapy: Radium, Thorium, and Other Radio-Active Elements in Medicine and Surgery The creation of this work has been prompted by the many solicitations of the author's friends and the inquiries of many others as to where it might be possible to obtain authoritative information upon the subject of radium and its scientific and medicinal properties. The reason for these queries is that if the medical literature of the day is carefully examined, it will be found that articles upon radio-activity in the English language are exceptional. This is in marked contrast with the literature of other languages, particularly German and French, in which the most active interest prevails. While this contrast is very apparent it is not altogether without foundation, for in this country it has been difficult to procure the radio-active materials. It is possible that the relation of our public institutions to their attendant physicians may be a factor; for wherever these valuable salts have been acquired, the investigator has been obliged, in almost every instance, to bear the expense. Another fact that has to some extent discouraged American investigation is that most of the radium brought to this country has been in the hands of private speculators; and in some instances, which have recently been brought to the attention of the profession, an exorbitant price was paid for an extremely poor quality of radium. Book Radium X Rays and the Living Cell

Download or read book Radium X Rays and the Living Cell written by Hector A. Colwell and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Radium, X Rays and the Living Cell: With Physical Introduction Our object in the present book is to describe some of the main experimental facts which have been established, as to the effects that the X rays and the rays from radium have upon having cells. In order to make the subject generally intelligible, a description of the properties of these radiations was necessary, and Part I. is designed, not only to provide information in this respect, but to meet the needs of those who approach the subject with a view to experimental investigation. A large amount of interest centres around the action which the rays have upon malignant cells, and some of the most detailed studies have been made by investigators in this connection. The results which have so far been reached are, we ma venture to hope, a good augury for the foundations of a rational basis of radio-therapy. This, however, is but one aspect of the effect of the rays upon the living cell, and we believe that an increased knowledge of the reactions exhibited by normal healthy cells and tissues is necessary before the real nature of the processes set up by these rays is revealed. The subject is not approached from the clinical aspect, but data have frequently been selected from the details of clinical observations, when these have borne upon the subject-matter in question.
