Book Radiation Monitoring and Dose Estimation of the Fukushima Nuclear Accident

Download or read book Radiation Monitoring and Dose Estimation of the Fukushima Nuclear Accident written by Sentaro Takahashi and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-02-07 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides comprehensive research findings related to the environmental monitoring of radiation, levels of radioactive nuclides in various environments and dose estimation in residents after the Fukushima nuclear power plant accident caused severe environmental contamination with radioactive nuclides. At the beginning of the book, a technical review written by a leading researcher of nuclear reactor technology explains what happened at the power plant. The review is followed by a commentary from a former member of the International Commission on Radiological Protection, providing the reader with easily understandable information about the concept of radiation dosage. In the main part of the book, a series of scientific reports presents valuable data on the radiation surveys of the environment, environmental radioactivity, transfer models and parameters of radioactive nuclides and dose assessment among residents. These reports present a wide range of findings from the research carried out in a variety of activities by large governmental organizations as well as by small private groups and individuals. The reader thus will find a large collection of valuable and interesting data related to the environmental contamination by radioactive nuclides after the Fukushima accident. Although earlier reports on this issue have been made public, this book is the only publication to fully depict the actual situation by providing comprehensive data obtained by diverse organizations and individuals.

Book Analysis of Cancer Risks in Populations Near Nuclear Facilities

Download or read book Analysis of Cancer Risks in Populations Near Nuclear Facilities written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2012-06-29 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the late 1980s, the National Cancer Institute initiated an investigation of cancer risks in populations near 52 commercial nuclear power plants and 10 Department of Energy nuclear facilities (including research and nuclear weapons production facilities and one reprocessing plant) in the United States. The results of the NCI investigation were used a primary resource for communicating with the public about the cancer risks near the nuclear facilities. However, this study is now over 20 years old. The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission requested that the National Academy of Sciences provide an updated assessment of cancer risks in populations near USNRC-licensed nuclear facilities that utilize or process uranium for the production of electricity. Analysis of Cancer Risks in Populations near Nuclear Facilities: Phase 1 focuses on identifying scientifically sound approaches for carrying out an assessment of cancer risks associated with living near a nuclear facility, judgments about the strengths and weaknesses of various statistical power, ability to assess potential confounding factors, possible biases, and required effort. The results from this Phase 1 study will be used to inform the design of cancer risk assessment, which will be carried out in Phase 2. This report is beneficial for the general public, communities near nuclear facilities, stakeholders, healthcare providers, policy makers, state and local officials, community leaders, and the media.

Book Introduction to Radiological Monitoring

Download or read book Introduction to Radiological Monitoring written by DCPA Staff College and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This progrmed course of study is designed to prepare local government officials and individual citizens to act in nuclear emergencies or disasters. Each of the four units has two lessons beginning with a brief overview and proceeding with self study frames. Line drawings are used to illustrate effects. Topics covered are the radiological monitor in civil defense, fallout effects, exposure guidance, RADEF instruments, protective measures, decontamination procedures, dose and dose rate calculations, and radiological monitor tasks, procedures, responsibilities, and reporting. An additional information appendix follows the same format but is not provided with tests; it covers nomograns and peacetime nuclear hazards.

Book Radiological Monitoring of the Environment

Download or read book Radiological Monitoring of the Environment written by B. C. Godbold and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-09-03 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Radiological Monitoring of the Environment documents the proceedings of a symposium organized by The Central Electricity Generating Board in association with The Joint Health Physics Committee, held at Berkeley, Gloucestershire, on 3-4 October 1963. Environmental monitoring in its different aspects is of interest to most health physicists, and in particular to those of the Generating Board in relation to nuclear power stations and nuclear laboratories. The symposium served the dual purpose of disseminating information on a subject of importance, and fulfilling one of the objectives of the Joint Health Physics Committee by bringing together people working in various fields. This volume is divided into two parts, following the way in which the symposium was arranged. The first part of the volume contains the papers and the second part consists of the transactions of the meeting at Berkeley. The papers presented cover topics such as radioactivity in agricultural products; the monitoring of artificial radioactivity in waters round the British Isles; the monitoring of uranium and plutonium dust hazards; radiological control in university laboratories; and environmental surveys around research reactors.

Book Handbook for Radiological Monitors

Download or read book Handbook for Radiological Monitors written by United States. Office of Civil Defense and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook provides the radiological monitor with the information and techniques normally required to perform essential duties. It also provides guidance that may be required, but should not be used, unless competent guidance is unavailable from a radiological defense officer. The possession of this manual is not sufficient to assure that an untrained person can effectively carry out the duties and responsibilities required of a radiological monitor. All personnel assigned monitoring responsibilities should complete, as a minimum, the Radiological Monitoring Course prescribed by the Office of Civil Defense, Department of Defense.

Book Long Term Health Monitoring of Populations Following a Nuclear or Radiological Incident in the United States

Download or read book Long Term Health Monitoring of Populations Following a Nuclear or Radiological Incident in the United States written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2019-08-30 with total page 89 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Accidents and terrorist attacks that lead to the release of radioactive materials can cause deaths, injuries, and a range of psychosocial effects in the surrounding community and team of emergency responders. In the United States, federal, state, and local agencies respond with the necessary resources to address the consequences of nuclear and radiological incidents and monitor the affected population. Following the 2011 Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident and the 2017 Gotham Shield National Level Exercise, the CDC recognized an opportunity to improve their practices by establishing a more efficient and timely health effect surveillance system before another incident occurs. On March 12-13th, 2019, the National Academies convened a workshop to discuss the process for preparing a radiation registry for monitoring long-term health effects of populations affected by a nuclear or radiological incident. Participants assessed existing information, useful practices, and tools for planning a radiation registry that will enhance incident monitoring and response methods. This publication summarizes the discussions and presentations from the workshop.
