Book excerpt: The purpose of this project was to prepare a motion picture of Radiological Defense operational and training procedures encompassed in Civil Effects Test Group Program 36 for use as a visual orientation device in the Federal Civil Defense Administration Radiological Defense Training Program. Photography and sound recording at the site was based on a shooting script prepared and approved prior to production. Because the completed motion picture will be unclassified, inclusion of restricted information in the script or picturization of restricted areas in the original photography was carefully avoided. All footage was processed and reviewed according to prescribed security regulations.

Book excerpt: The procedures and results of extensive pre and postshot aerial photographic coverage by naval aircraft are described and evaluated. Objectives were to use high performance photo aircraft to document pre and postshot ground zero area conditions, to provide aerial photographs for immediate onsite use in operations and to determine the unique advantages, if any, of this type of photographic coverage. One preshot and three postshot photo missions were run over the ground zero area by flights of two supersonic F8U-1P (Crusader) jet aircraft of the Pacific Fleet. During each mission, black and white, infra-red and color films were exposed. Missions were initially limited to coverage of the immediate crater area but later expanded in area to include the extensive up-wind and cross-wind base surge deposition area.

Scientific personnel visiting the test site also helped. A total of 56 persons designated by federal, state, and local organizations and having active roles in civil defense attended the two sessions of Project 36.1. Forty trainees participated in the first session, held June 17 to June 28, 1957, in conjunction with Project 36.2; the second session, Aug. 8 to Sept. 3, 1957, was attended by 16 trainees. The objectives of the training projects were fulfilled. The response of participants was favorable; and participants recommended that the training projects be continued in future continental series.
