Book Absorbed Dose to Water Calibration of Ionization Chambers in a 60co Gamma ray Beam

Download or read book Absorbed Dose to Water Calibration of Ionization Chambers in a 60co Gamma ray Beam written by nist and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2013-12-11 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Absorbed-dose-to-water calibrations are important to the medical community to facilitate the accurate determination of doses delivered to tumors during external-beam cancer therapy. The first version of this document offered an absorbed-dose-to-water calibration service based on a graphite calorimeter as the primary standard. However, the use of this calorimeter necessitated calculations to convert the measurement from graphite to water. In 1989, a water calorimeter was introduced at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), which was to replace the graphite calorimeter as the primary standard. Though the calculations necessary for conversion factors were eliminated with this new technology, a calibration service based on the water calorimeter was not developed at this time. Despite the fact that the service was available, the medical physics community did not take advantage of it and used chambers calibrated in terms of exposure (in units of roentgen) to calibrate their radiotherapy 60Co and high-energy electron accelerator x-ray. A protocol, commonly known as TG21, developed by the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM), involves many calculations to arrive at the quantity desired by the medical physicist in the practicing clinic, cGy/MU (centiGray/monitor unit). The AAPM has initiated a new protocol through Task Group 51 which involves absorbed-dose-to-water calibrations of ion chambers commonly used in the calibration of the clinical radiotherapy photon and electron beams.NIST has developed and is now prepared to offer the absorbed-dose-towater calibration service for ionization chambers based on a water calorimeter standard developed by Steve Domen at NIST. This document outlines the steps that have been taken to develop this service including a brief description of the Domen water calorimeter. The procedures that are involved in the calibration of an ionization chamber for this quantity are presented along with results from recent comparisons of the NIST with the Bureau International des Poids et Mesures (BIPM) in France and the National Radiation Council Canada (NRCC).

Book Handbook of Particle Detection and Imaging

Download or read book Handbook of Particle Detection and Imaging written by Claus Grupen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-01-08 with total page 1251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The handbook centers on detection techniques in the field of particle physics, medical imaging and related subjects. It is structured into three parts. The first one is dealing with basic ideas of particle detectors, followed by applications of these devices in high energy physics and other fields. In the last part the large field of medical imaging using similar detection techniques is described. The different chapters of the book are written by world experts in their field. Clear instructions on the detection techniques and principles in terms of relevant operation parameters for scientists and graduate students are given.Detailed tables and diagrams will make this a very useful handbook for the application of these techniques in many different fields like physics, medicine, biology and other areas of natural science.

Book Criteria for the Operation of Federall owned Secondary Calibration Laboratories ionizing Radiation

Download or read book Criteria for the Operation of Federall owned Secondary Calibration Laboratories ionizing Radiation written by and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The document contains standards of performance for laboratories that calibrate instrumentation used to measure ionizing radiation. Such standards are useful for the development of a secondary level of calibration laboratories that can provide a high-quality link between the National Institute of Standards and Technology and those who make routine measurements at the field level. The standards may also be used as criteria on which a decision is based regarding accreditation of a particular laboratory. They were developed by representatives of federally-owned laboratories that perform calibrations of the type addressed by the document. The first major part contains general criteria that must be satisfied by all laboratories seeking accreditation. It includes requirements relating to management and staff, physical aspects of the laboratory, calibrations facilities and equipment, operational procedures, accuracy and quality assurance, and records and reports. Five subsequent major parts establish criteria for calibration of survey instruments, irradiation of personnel dosimeters, calibration of sources, calibration of instruments for diagnostic levels, and calibration of reference-class instruments. The types of radiation covered include gamma rays, x rays, beta particles, neutrons, and alpha particles. An appendix describes the proficiency tests administered by NIST to secondary laboratories as a prerequisite for their accreditation.
