Book excerpt: Welcome to Radio Mystery RPG a micro role-playing game (Version 2) which recreates the old crime and noir mystery programs that played on the radio during the thirties and forties.WHAT IS RADIO MYSTERY RPG?Radio Mystery RPG is a pen and paper RPG that takes place in the crime-ridden pulpy noir world radio shows and programs from the 30s and 40s.Ultimately, this game's theme is centered on the drama and action present in detective and mystery radio shows rather than on gritty realism. Each campaign (called a SHOW in this game) is split up into "timed" episodes. A cast of police officers, detective, PIs, dames, and femme fatales will come together to create compelling mystery stories in the grimy crime-ridden streets of 1940s America. The Micro RPG V2 system is specifically designed to create a tense and pulp-esque form of storytelling where anything can happen. A sense of urgency is created by all the players using one deck of cards. When the deck runs out, the "Episode" of the radio show ends--potentially with a cliffhanger. Moreover, Radio Mystery RPG is the first in a series of gamebooks titled "Radio Waves." Future books in the series will cover other classical radio show genres.WHAT IS A MICRO RPG (V2)?Many pen and paper role-playing games on today's market are known to be very heavy with rules and regulations. Character creation alone can take up to an hour or more for some of these games. Many games even incorporate heavy board game elements such as tactical maps, tokens, and movement.Because of this fact, many would-be gamers shy away from RPGs because of the daunting complexity or rules. Gamers who enjoy RPGs may not have time for complex games.Well, Radio Mystery RPG--along with other games in the Micro RPG line--focus more on the creative element of storytelling rather than number crunching or lengthy rulebooks. Moreover, this book is part of the second edition of the Micro RPG (called Version 2 or V2). It takes the simple rules from the previous edition and simplifies them even further, making it so anyone can jump right in and enjoy the game.In Radio Mystery RPG character creation should take no longer than 5 to 10 minutes for all players. Learning the game system and explaining it to players should be simple and straightforward as well. The rules in this game act more like guidelines to facilitate good gameplay and storytelling rather than number crunching.Radio Mystery RPG and other Micro RPGs should facilitate a fast-paced game that is easy to pick up for gamers who are on the go.You could play a half hour session during your lunch break at work, squeeze in a round during the baby's nap, or even play while you are in the car during a road trip! That is the ease and leisure of The Micro RPG V2 system.

Book Robert W Chambers Master of The King in Yellow

Download or read book Robert W Chambers Master of The King in Yellow written by Shawn M. Tomlinson and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2015-11-09 with total page 495 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has taken me 37 years to write this biography of author Robert W. Chambers. Along the way, I wrote and published many articles about him, but did not complete the biography until 2014. I got the idea of writing it when I was 15, and the reason I got the idea is the same reason it has taken so long to write the book. There simply is not that much information about Chambers out there. Despite his fame and thorough integration in New York high society, very little was written about him during his lifetime. This volume contains the Expanded Edition of the biography, Robert W. Chambers: Maker of Moons, as well as the collection of articles, originally titled, Robert W. Chambers: In Search of the Unknown Author of The King in Yellow.

Chambers: Maker of Moons: Author of The King in Yellow Unmasked traces the history of the author of The King in Yellow, the book that influenced H.P. Lovecraft and the Cthulhu Mythos. Chambers was a top selling author in the early 20th century writing nearly 90 books, but has been largely forgotten except by the readers of horror fiction, particularly fans of the Cthulhu Mythos. This is the first full biography of Chambers, researched over nearly four decades by Shawn M. Tomlinson who grew up in the small town where Chambers summered. Tomlinson wrote many articles about Chambers previous to this book, primarily for area newspapers, as well as for several magazines including Adirondack Life and Ride of the Horsemen. His chapbook about Chambers, first published in 1996, went to three editions. Robert W. Chambers: Maker of Moons: Author of The King in Yellow Unmasked includes portraits of Chambers, interior and exterior photos of his summer home (Broadalbin House) and a full bibliography.

In 1875, Inspector Ol'Barrow of Dover's borough police is still coming to terms with the advent of radio dramas when he is confronted by a murder mystery. During their investigation, he and his colleague Bigsby come eye to eye with an assassin with otherworldly origins. Spurred on by his sense of duty and a desire to redeem himself, Inspector Ol'Barrow collaborates with a clandestine organization called the Association of Ishtar. They claim to be mere advisers who aid the authorities with the containment of anomalies known as Rifts. These are harmless gateways to other worlds but also provide access to the many threats lurking inside the multiverse. Ol'Barrow's eyes are opened to a reality in which Napoleon used futuristic weapons to bombard England. Companies have been developing out-of-this-world technology. And worst of all, everyone is taking the progress it created for granted. Humanity is advancing into an increasingly technocratic future. Where will it end? As far as certain groups are concerned, biology is a dead end, and humanity needs to ascend. About the series Created in the wake of the Napoleonic Wars, the Association of Ishtar is a clandestine organization of volunteers who have taken it upon themselves to explore the Multiverse... AoI is a series of Steampunk and Lovecraftian short stories by Bonsart: the creator of the Steampunk Beginners Guide documentary series. Book excerpt: One moment sets the course of destiny. But what if that one moment was changed in the smallest of ways? What if one madman's plan actually were to succeed beyond our known history? The Old West-The Wild West, The American Frontier-is one of the world's most familiar modern myths. The time was draped in ruggedness; there was an idealized dream of freedom, and a notion that just one person could shape the world. That myth belongs to all of us. Yet so many stories of truth, justice, and the American Way have been stolen, erased, and never recorded. Haunted West is a game about hope through struggle. It is a game that pieces together the stories of the largely forgotten people of the Old West, the people who have been whitewashed by history. Discover the American experience in the Weird West. Grab your rifle, jet pack, and spurs to battle traitorous rebels in the defense of freedom, join the fight against temporally displaced dinosaurs, rustle cattle to make ends meet, and hijack a train full of illicit Confederate gold!

Book Second Person

  • ISBN : 0262514184
  • Pages : 428 pages

Download or read book Second Person written by Pat Harrigan and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2010-01-22 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Game designers, authors, artists, and scholars discuss how roles are played and how stories are created in role-playing games, board games, computer games, interactive fictions, massively multiplayer games, improvisational theater, and other "playable media." Games and other playable forms, from interactive fictions to improvisational theater, involve role playing and story—something played and something told. In Second Person, game designers, authors, artists, and scholars examine the different ways in which these two elements work together in tabletop role-playing games (RPGs), computer games, board games, card games, electronic literature, political simulations, locative media, massively multiplayer games, and other forms that invite and structure play. Second Person—so called because in these games and playable media it is "you" who plays the roles, "you" for whom the story is being told—first considers tabletop games ranging from Dungeons & Dragons and other RPGs with an explicit social component to Kim Newman's Choose Your Own Adventure-style novel Life's Lottery and its more traditional author-reader interaction. Contributors then examine computer-based playable structures that are designed for solo interaction—for the singular "you"—including the mainstream hit Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time and the genre-defining independent production Façade. Finally, contributors look at the intersection of the social spaces of play and the real world, considering, among other topics, the virtual communities of such Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games (MMORPGs) as World of Warcraft and the political uses of digital gaming and role-playing techniques (as in The Howard Dean for Iowa Game, the first U.S. presidential campaign game). In engaging essays that range in tone from the informal to the technical, these writers offer a variety of approaches for the examination of an emerging field that includes works as diverse as George R.R. Martin's Wild Cards series and the classic Infocom game Planetfall. Appendixes contain three fully-playable tabletop RPGs that demonstrate some of the variations possible in the form.
