Beginning in the late 1930s, the commercial networks, private agencies, and the government cooperated with radio dramatists to produce plays to alert Americans to the Nazi threat. They also used radio to stimulate morale. They showed how Americans could support the fight against fascism even if it meant just having a "victory garden." Simultaneously as they worked on the war effort, many radio writers and actors advanced a progressive agenda to fight the enemy within: racism, poverty, and other social ills. When the war ended, many of these people paid for their idealism by suffering blacklisting. Veterans' groups, the FBI, right-wing politicians, and other reactionaries mounted an assault on them to drive them out of their professions. This book discusses that partly successful effort and the response of the radio personalities involved. This book discusses commercial drama series such as The Man Behind the Gun, network sustained shows such as those of Norman Corwin, and government-produced programs such as the Uncle Sam series. The book is largely based on the author's interviews with Norman Corwin, Arthur Miller, Pete Seeger, Arthur Laurents, Art Carney and dozens of others associated with radio during its Golden Age. It also discusses public reaction to these broadcasts and the issue of blacklisting. Words at War weaves together materials from FBI files and materials from archives around the country, including the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the National Archives and a dozen university special collection libraries, to tell how the nation used a unique broadcast genre in a time of national crisis. To distract himself for a while from the monotony of sitting in a foxhole and from the sporadic shelling by the enemy, a soldier on the Anzio beachhead made the first foxhole radio to listen to whatever stations might be in range. With no crystal nor cat whisker, he substituted what was on hand, a razor blade and a safety pin.It spread, by word of mouth mostly, across the beachhead, Europe and to the Pacific. Adopted by civilian radio enthusiasts, it became part of the lore of home experimenters and grade school science projects. More than a curious artifact of wartime improvisation, the foxhole radio reveals the story of the military's role in the radio development, and an intertwined tale of army shaving, corporate intrigue, and the evolution of the radio wave detector that led to the first solid state electronics. Foxhole Radio follows the history of army radio from the first experiments in the 1890s, to its coming of age during WWI, and its use for propaganda and morale during WWII. The razor and safety pin detector reveal a conflation of standard, archaic and folk radio wave detectors, the persistence of lore, and the army's battle with facial hair. The name "foxhole radio" itself tells of early field fortifications, words borrowed from across the lines, and the evolution of military jargon. Most importantly, Foxhole Radio tells the stories of the veterans who built these sets, how they built them, what they listened to, and their everyday realities. Though separated by thousands of miles with very different experiences, they were all united by a strange little radio and their desire to hear music and news from home.

He made numerous broadcasts interviewing many fighter pilots after engagements with the Germans and recalling stories of raids, bomb attacks and eventually the Blitzkrieg when they all were evacuated from France. In late 1940 he was commissioned in the RAF as a pilot and flew Catalina flying boats of Coastal Command. After support missions over the Atlantic protecting supply convoys from America, his squadron was deployed to Ceylon which was under threat from the Japanese navy. Gardner was later recruited by Lord Mountbatten, to help report the exploits of the British 14th Army in Burma. He both broadcast and filed countless reports of their astonishing bravery in beating the Japanese in jungle conditions and monsoon weather. After the war, Gardner became the BBC air correspondent from 1946-1953. As such, he became known as “The Voice of the Air,” witnessing and recording the greatest days in British aviation history. But perhaps he will best be remembered for his 1940 eye-witness account of an air battle over the English Channel when German dive bombers unsuccessfully attacked a British convoy but were driven off by RAF fighters. That broadcast is still played frequently today.
