Book excerpt: This book works with two contrasting imaginings of 1960s London: the one of the excess and comic vacuousness of Swinging London, the other of the radical and experimental cultural politics generated by the city's counterculture. The connections between these two scenes are mapped looking firstly at the spectacular events that shaped post-war London, then at the modernist physical and social reconstruction of the city alongside artistic experiments such as Pop and Op Art. Making extensive use of London's underground press the book then explores the replacement of this seemingly materialistic image with the counterculture of underground London from the mid-1960s. Swinging City develops the argument that these disparate threads cohere around a shared cosmology associated with a new understanding of nature which differently positioned humanity and technology. The book tracks a moment in the historical geography of London during which the city asserts itself as a post-imperial global city. Swinging London it argues, emerged as the product of this recapitalisation, by absorbing avant-garde developments from the provinces and a range of transnational, mainly transatlantic, influences.

Wendehorst explores the relationship between British Jewry and Zionism from 1936 to 1956, a crucial period in modern Jewish history encompassing both the shoah and the establishment of the State of Israel. He attempts to provide an answer to what, at first sight, appears to be a contradiction: the undoubted prominence of Zionism among British Jews on the one hand, and its diverse expressions, ranging from aliyah to making a donation to a Zionist fund, on the other. Wendehorst argues that the ascendancy of Zionism in British Jewry is best understood as a particularly complex, but not untypical, variant of the 19th and 20th century's trend to re-imagine communities in a national key. He examines the relationship between British Jewry and Zionism on three levels: the transnational Jewish sphere of interaction, the British Jewish community, and the place of the Jewish community in British state and society. The introduction adapts theories of nationalism so as to provide a framework of analysis for Diaspora Zionism. Chapter one addresses the question of why British Jews became Zionists, chapter two how the various quarters of British Jewry related to the Zionist project in the Middle East, chapter three Zionist nation-building in Britain and chapter four the impact of Zionism on Jewish relations with the larger society. The conclusion modifies the original argument by emphasising the impact that the specific fabric of British state and society, in particular the Empire, had on British Zionism.

The decision behind choosing such topic was dictated by the previous interests which emerged as a result of my earlier contacts with the British culture. Various British novelists and playwrights who emerged in the 1950’s expressed disaffection with the established socio-political order of their country. Their impatience and resentment were especially aroused by what they perceived as the hypocrisy of the upper and middle classes. They were called Angry Young Men - a journalistic catchphrase originally used by British newspapers after the success of the play Look Back in Anger by the playwright John Osborne. Evil nature of human, religious symbolism and ever-present pessimism. Few novels as brief as William Golding’s Lord of the Flies raise so many fascinating questions. Are human beings evil and how does evil arise? What is the nature of isolation? Why and how do we choose our leaders and what are a leader’s responsibilities? The list could continue for several pages and still barely touch the peak of the mountain, yet each is a significant one worthy to be considerate. Lord of the Flies, full of Christian imagery and symbolism, in the end has a very humanistic lesson - if the beast is within us we can cope with it. Rather than being under the influence of a supernatural devil – which in fact Golding claimed not to be the force present on the island - we are confronted with our own original sin and depravity. Once removed from the bounds and rules of civilization we have a strong tendency to revert to brutality and savagery. As Golding illustrates with Simon, though, there is goodness within people as well. If that goodness is reinforced, we have hope of overcoming the evil.
