Book excerpt: Radiative transfer of photons though a random distribution of scatterers is considered. The Boltzmann transport eq is used to develop a program to obtain real values of intensity based on a set of discrete time intervals. A Newton-Raphson method is used to determine a set of eigenvalues based on the boundary conditions and system geometry. A numerical method due to Lanczos is used to approximately invert a Laplace transform. The algorithm is designed for easy modification to more general problems. PART II: Eigenvalues for the intensity distribution from the one speed Boltzmann transport equation can be computed using an iteration method with the roots and coefficients for the zeros of the Legendre polynomials and the results converge to the known values based on a Newton-Raphson method used in an earlier treatment for a radiative transfer . A spherical harmonic expansion of the intensity and the application of laplace and finite fourier transforms was used to solve the problem . The zero of a transcendental equation based on the differential equation for the boundary conditions was approximated for the eigenvalues . A Newton-Raphson method was used . Here an iteration method is used with the Legendre polynomials and the results are identical to the Newton-Raphson results therefore the Legendre polynomials can be used to compute the eigenvalues for the intensity distribution . A S16 approximation of the intensity distribution using Fast Fourier Transforms for the coefficients of the interpolating polynomial is given . The program for the coefficients is from a standard Numerical Methods text (Burden and Faires, 1993, Chap.8, p. 309). Arctans from the approximation are compared with the Newton-Raphson eigenvalues.

In the first half the problem examined is that of the radiative heat transfer between parallel walls bounding a slab of hot gas. An exact solution to this problem is obtained in terms of the moments of Chandrasekhar's X and Y functions. In addition, exact results are obtained for the magnitude of the temperature discontinuity at each wall. These results confirm the accuracy of a simple slip analysis. The second half is concerned with the more difficult problem of kinetic heat transfer for the same basic geometry. A linearized relaxation model for the Boltzmann equation is adopted and simplified with the specific intention of obtaining equations formally identical to those of radiative transport. These equations are then solved for the heat transfer and temperature jumps using the results of the first section. (Author).

Several methods, providing exact expressions for the radiation field in a semi-infinite atmosphere, are described in detail and applied to unpolarized and polarized continuous spectra and spectral lines. Among these methods, the Wiener–Hopf method, introduced in 1931 for a stellar atmospheric problem, is used today in fields such as solid mechanics, diffraction theory, or mathematical finance. Asymptotic analyses are carried out on unpolarized and polarized radiative transfer equations and on a discrete time random walk. Book excerpt: The usual book on the theory of spectral line formation begins with an in-depth dis cussion of radiation transfer, including the elegant methods of obtaining analytical solutions for special cases, and of the physics of line broadening. Neither of those features will be found in this book. It is assumed that the reader is already familiar with the essentials of transport theory and of line broadening and is ready to investi gate some of the particular applications of the theory to the flow of line photons through the outer layers of a star, or other tenuous media. The main thrust of this book is toward the compilation and presentation of a vast quantity of computational material available to the author in the form of computer output. The material presented represents a highly filtered sample of the published work in this subject plus an extensive set of previously unpublished results. To present large quantities of computer output in an intelligible and efficient way is a difficult task, for which I have found no really satisfactory solution. Chapters III and IV, in particular, contain almost exclusively this type of presentation. The reader may find these chapters somewhat tedious because of the level of condensation of the material. I have tried to reach a reasonable balance between over condensation and excessive detail, which in the long run may be irrelevant.

It has applications in neutron transport, atmospheric physics, heat transfer, molecular imaging, and so on. In steady state, the radiative transfer equation is an integro-differential equation of five independent variables. This high dimensionality and presence of integral term present a serious challenge when one tries to solve the equation numerically. Over the past 50 years, several techniques for solving the radiative transfer equation have been introduced. One among them is to use approximations of RTE. Various approximations of RTE have been proposed in the literature. These include, but are certainly not limited to, the delta-Eddington approximation, the Fokker-Planck approximation, the Boltzmann-Fokker-Planck approximation, the generalized Fokker-Planck approximation, the Fokker-Planck-Eddington approximation and the generalized Fokker-Planck-Eddington approximation. The Fokker-Planck approximation and differential approximation have received particular attention in the literature due to their relatively high accuracy, relatively low computational cost, and flexibility to potential large scale parallel computing. In this thesis we present a well-posed result for the Fokker-Planck equation that may be used to approximate the radiative transfer equation in highly forward-peaked media. Then we study the differential approximation of radiative transfer (RT/DA) equations. Well-posedness of these approximations is studied. A convergent iteration method for the RT/DA equation is presented. Then we turn to a study of RT/DA based inverse problems. The inverse problems are ill-posed and regularization is needed in solving the inverse problems. We present an existence result for solutions of regularized formulations of the inverse problems. Finally examples are included to illustrate numerical results in solving the inverse problems.

This book has been written to illustrate how calorimetric and spectroscopic measurements can be used to check theoretical predictions on extinction properties of infrared radiation in optically thick, absorbing and scattering particulate media. A determination of infrared extinction coefficients is now possible from three completely independent methods. An interpretation of the results of thermal conductivity measurements is made in terms of the diffusion model of RT. One of the most important topics of the book is the experimental separation of heat transfer modes. Since all modes other than scattered radiation are coupled by temperature profiles, conservation of energy also requires an understanding of the non-radiative heat flow components. Unlike other volumes on RT, this book also contains a review of non-radiative heat flow mechanisms. Thus the book does not treat RT as an isolated phenomenon but stresses the key role of RT among the other transport processes. A considerable part of the book is devoted to the calculation of extinction cross sections by application of Mie theory, anisotropic and dependent scattering, optimization of radiation extinction by experimental means, existence or non-existence of thermal conductivity, and other general questions within the field of thermophysics.
